Like playing Pong on steroids, Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 is a hardcore paddle-based video table tennis game that’s set in a weird (think Douglas Adams’ works) sci-fi world where the paddles can talk. Not only does it amp up the typical pong gameplay by adding in numerous and crazy spells and funky equipment to wear; the game also comes with thrilling boss “fights” where you can – honest to god – romance paddles via the game’s dynamic dialog system dubbed the “PaddleTalk”. You can basically charm your way into fulfilling relationships with various paddles! Mind = blown!
Similar to games with factions that you can become buddies with, you get to choose which paddle you align yourself with in this game. You’ll basically be able to romance various boss paddles you face using the game’s dynamic dialog system called the “PaddleTalk”.
Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 starts off being a simple Pong-inspired game… that is until you get to your first level up. Similar to an RPG, this game has a progression system where you’ll “level up” and improve your stats by defeating various types of paddles, whether they are big or small; long or short. The more paddles you defeat, the more level-ups you’ll gain and the stronger you’ll become.
Of course, your enemy paddles will grow stronger, more deviously so, alongside you as well, so you can definitely expect the difficulty to increase as you play. The AI seems to become cleverer as well, knowing to deploy certain strategies that a someone who has played Pong before would instantly recognize.
Besides getting stats like health and strength during a level-up, you’ll also get to choose between two choices (usually) which will either bump up certain stats like agility which will speed up movement, or grant you a new spell or skill that will allow your paddle to move horizontally, in addition to vertically, and let you cast fireballs.
Spells truly play a “make or break” role in the gameplay. This is mainly because each paddle, including yours, comes with a health bar. Every hit you make, depending on the angle of the said hit, will cost you a small amount of health… which, when you think about it, makes total sense – your paddle ARE being hit by a ball after all! When your health dropped to zero, your paddle will explode and your side of the table will be left defenseless.
Some spells, like the fireball, will help you drain your opponent’s health faster, allowing you to score a point unopposed. There are also support spells like the heal/restore health spell which will help bump up your health when needed. However, all of these spells have cooldowns and will cost you mana, so you can’t really spam them.
Similar to certain games, you can perform a “skill shot” here. Dubbed as a “smash” (a terminology assumingly taken from badminton), this skill shot will allow you to bounce the ball back at your opponent at a much greater speed, so much so that it might not be able to receive it, allowing you to score an easy point.
Each match in Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 is designed to be short and sweet. Whoever scored the first 3 points will win the match. But of course, the game isn’t ruthless either. If you lose a match, you will be able to retain all your levels, stats and spells and hop right back into the very same match – though the arena might be different due to it being randomly assigned – against the same opponent.
As mentioned before as well, Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 has a romancing option where you can use your Charm (it’s a stat that you can improve over time) to woo your fellow opponents into abandoning their post on the other side of the screen and form a relationship with you. It’s definitely one of the weirdest features of the game and it does make one wonder… why is this feature in the game in the first place? Honestly, we don’t know but it’s pretty amusing and we think that the devs added it in “just for fun”.
Currently, the game is single-player only but this doesn’t mean that the developers aren’t considering adding in a multiplayer mode. Fingers crossed!
The old-school, albeit colored, retro look that Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 pays homage to the arcade games that had given rise to the booming gaming industry today. Even the screen has been designed to look like it would if the game’s played on bulky computer monitor from the 90s. Everything about the game is designed to invoke nostalgia in older gamers and to give younger gamers a glimpse into the much clamored, golden age of arcade games, and in that respect, it did everything right.
To put it simply, Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 is so much more than Pong. It builds upon the age-old classic by integrating the addictive RPG feature of progression plus a few bonuses like spells and skills, which added another layer of strategy to the overall gameplay, and a romancing option that, frankly speaking, we think was added “just for fun”. The game has cool retro-style graphics, and to top it all off, is priced at a very affordable price.
Hypergalactic Psychic Table Tennis 3000 is, without a doubt, one of the most inventive arcade games of the year so far and if you love arcade games, you should definitely give it a try!
