Plotline

The storyline in Hunter X Online is fairly similar to the comic series. The game opens with Gon’s determination to sign up for the Hunter Exam, which in his Aunt Mito’s opinion is just too difficult for a young boy of 12 years old. However, Gon proved himself to be every bit an excellent hunter as his missing father, Ging.

As Gon sets off to undergo the Exam, he will meet many new companions as well as other rival exam takers on his way to achieve his dream of becoming the best hunter the world has ever seen and perhaps be reunited with his long-lost father!

Gameplay

Hunter X Online is an anime-themed JRPG with a storyline that is based on the popular manga series, Hunter X Hunter, thus you don’t exactly get to choose which character to play as. Instead, every player will start of playing as the enthusiastic and very capable, 12-year-old Gon. However, it wouldn’t be long before Gon makes his first friend, a hero by the name of Kurapika.

Every friendly companion that Gon meets on his journey can be recruited to join his team via the recruitment tab. Here, you can play the slot machine for a chance to draw a new hero or get enough hero souls to recruit one. You’ll get 3 chances to play the slots for free per day. Any subsequent spins will cost you game cash. If you want a better chance of getting higher quality heroes, you will need to spend the diamonds that you get to spin the slot machine instead.

Heroes that are recruited are automatically added to your team. Each team can contain up to 5 heroes, though the other slots will be unlocked as you level up. These heroes can also be upgraded to increase their Nen rating (a.k.a. Battle Rating/ Combat Power). There are several methods to do so – you can use advanced materials to advance your hero by a star right up to 3 stars while unlocking a new hero skill in the process; you could also level them up using exp scrolls.

Similar to other MMORPGs, heroes can also equip various weapons and armor. New gear can usually be earned from completing certain dungeons or events, or purchased from specific shops using an equally specific game currency. However, most of the time, you’ll probably be getting item fragments rather than the complete item. You’ll then need to gather a sufficient number of these fragments, combine them and craft them into the proper equipment. These gear items can be upgraded to increase the stats they provide too.

Now, you may like playing as Gon, since he’s the protagonist and all in Hunter X Hunter, but you may want to switch things up and play as someone else instead. Well, you can do exactly that by going over to the Manual tab. Here, you can choose to play as any member of your team. If you’re willing to spend some game cash, you can even play as heroes that you’ve yet to recruit. How awesome is that?

Aside from its heroes, Hunter X Online also features plenty of dungeons and arenas for its players to enjoy. The most frequent instances you’ll be playing in is probably the story-based dungeons. These dungeons consume vitality when entered and feature chapter rewards depending on how many stars, collectively, that you’ve gained (you can get up to 3 stars per stage). You can open special reward chests that come with every cleared Elite and Boss stage as well.

As you level up, you’ll also unlock access to other types of dungeons. There’s the Hero Trials where you’ll need to battle tougher enemies of 3 different levels of difficulty to win resources like game cash, upgrade materials, exp scrolls and more. You can also attempt the Sky Arena where you can fight elites and win gear shards. The stars you’ve obtained here can even be used to buy special power-ups to aid you in defeating the next levels of elites. Let’s not forget about the many PvE-oriented, time-limited events, such as World Boss, in Hunter X Online too.

For the PvP-inclined, Hunter X Online provides a variety of PvP options too. You can choose to take on other players in the game’s ranked ladder match. The ladder coins you win can then be exchanged for goodies like evolution pills, souls, exp scrolls and more. There are also guild-based PvP that you can sign up for as long as you’re in a guild.

Like most browser JRPGs, combat in Hunter X Online is pretty much automated, though you are free to choose otherwise. However, interestingly, your characters will accumulate points as they deal damage on the enemies, and once the power meter is filled, you can click on their respective portraits to unleash their ultimate power. This is the only manual aspect of the game’s combat during PvE. In PvP, everything’s automated, so your Nen rating (as well as your luck) becomes incredibly important.

Hunter X Online is also a very generous game. It offers a ton of rewards ranging from logins, level-ups and Nen milestone rewards to friends’ gifts, top-ups bonuses and more. If you really want to dominate in this game, you might want to consider investing some real cash just so you could buy exclusive items reserved for VIPs. The tiered VIP system used also means that you’ll get to unlock much better rewards and perks the more real money you spend in this game.

Community

Hunter X Online is quite the social MMORPG. There are guilds for you to join not only to feel a sense of community since you’ll probably be playing the game with other fans of Hunter X Hunter, but you’ll also gain access to special guild-only features. These features include guild dungeon, boss, battle, tech bonuses, daily salary and the guild shop where you can spend the contribution points you’ve earned from donating game cash or premium diamonds to the guild.

The points can also be used to promote yourself to higher ranks in the guild. But of course, you won’t be able to reach the “guild leader” status simply by buying your way up the ranks. Instead, you might want to create your own guild. Being a leader comes with heavy responsibilities, but at least you’ll also get special leader benefits and privileges, including a higher daily salary.

Graphics/ Sound

The art style used in this game seems more 3D-like than any other browser JRPGs and that’s actually a nice touch since it gives the game a more polished look. However, the incredibly long loading times which can go up to a whopping 5 minutes don’t seem worth the wait for the few seconds of 3D special effects that come along with the game’s automated combat.

Chrome users should also take note that Hunter X Online uses Flash so the game won’t run on Chrome. You might want to opt for Firefox instead. In terms of the sound, the music that’s played in the background sounds pretty generic despite being pleasant to listen to.

Conclusion

In short, Hunter X Online is definitely a browser-based Japanese anime-themed MMORPG that’s developed solely to cater to the gamer fan base of Hunter X Hunter. The game has all the familiar characters, a rather predictable storyline and a gameplay that’s pretty much automated. It’s a fun casual MMO that fans of the anime would love. Do give it a try!
