Gameplay

The game starts off by prompting you to set up your own virtual cricket team! Name your team and select a suitable team logo from the selection of 10 premade logos. There is no option to create your own team logo though. After that, you’ll need to choose a country you want to be affiliated with, including some of the “big name” countries in cricket like Australia, India, West Indies, England and Sri Lanka.

Once you’re done, Howzat Cricket provides you with a simple tutorial to guide you through the “how to play” part of the game. The controls can be rather complicated if you have absolutely no prior in-depth knowledge of cricket as a lot of the terms will not mean anything to you. For such players, it is best if you could read up on the basics of the cricket game in real life to grasp an understanding of some of the cricket terms used, such as wicket or hitting a six.

The game offers 2 game modes - a single player mode, where you’ll go head-to-head with the computer AI as your team battle its way from the humble Pro League to the coveted Cup of Titans tournament, and a multiplayer mode where you’ll be competing with up to 4 other human players, either friends or total strangers, for victory! Let’s start with the single player mode first, shall we?

Howzat Cricket provides up to 10 challenges (This includes tournaments, championships... you name it, the game got it!) for you to enjoy and in each challenge, you’ll need to defeat quite a number of teams, from round 1 to 7 and then the quarter final, semi-final and finals in order to snag that trophy at the end! Each game your team plays in will cost you 1 energy point to play. Your team will lose fitness and form after every match, thus you’ll need to give your players their deserved rest after playing several matches. However, if you cannot wait, you can buy a form or fitness boost to refill your team’s fitness and form meters respectively so you can play longer! You can also replay challenges to improve your glory.

Ready to get some batting action? Great, but before you go charging into the field, you should check your team lineup to ensure everything’s in place. For arranging lineups, the game provides you with a nifty “auto-select the best lineup” option that will arrange the batsmen order based on individual player ratings. There are generally 4 grades of players in this game, namely gold, silver, bronze and default. Default players are usually the lowest ranked in terms of ratings, but they do not have expiry dates on their contracts. For other grades of players, their contracts last between 2 days to 7 days only and they cost quite a lot of in-game cash, or in the case of the gold player, real cash. However, these players can be considered as much more established players with a decent player rating and a much solid performance. Thus, sometimes, a huge investment may go a long way in ensuring victory for your team!

Now that your lineup’s done and over with, it’s time to take your spot and get your bat ready! In Howzat Cricket, you do not only bat for yourself, but also for every batsman on your team, so you’ll certainly be seeing plenty of batting action in this game! Awesome, right? Anyway, as mentioned, the controls can be a tad bit complicated for the new player, but you can improve by practicing! To hit a shot, you’ll be using your arrow keys. After the ball is bowled, quickly determine where the ball is heading towards and time your hit properly and accordingly. There’s a timing meter that tells you how well you time the shot after the hit was made. For a good timing, the indicator should reside in the green zone, resulting in better shots, for example, hitting a six. After getting off a hit, you can then press spacebar to run.

You can even switch batting modes using spacebar when you’re batting. There are 2 modes to choose from, namely moderate and aggressive. Moderate mode allows for safer shots, but they will be low-scoring while aggressive mode can be risky but if you’ve managed to pull it off, you can earn much higher scores. The game will end when a team scores maximum runs in a 5 over cricket game. Once a game is concluded, your team’s final performance will be evaluated and a certain amount of glory will be allocated to your team. You’ll need glory to level up and unlock other features in the game, such as the multiplayer mode, which can only be accessed at level 5. Glory earned in multiplayer mode is instead used to rank your team on the leaderboard and naturally, the higher rank your team gets, the better the rewards (which usually include cash, coins or a free boost)

With your freshly earned winnings, you can use it to upgrade your team’s gear. Buy new bats to increase your team’s power. This makes hitting powerful shots in-game much easier... so you can get that 6 much more frequently than before! You can also buy better kits to improve control. Control is important for timing, and when it is increased, your batsmen’s ball timing will improve significantly. There are also boosters that you can buy using premium cash to help your team up their game in Howzat Cricket! They include guaranteed six, which will allow you to hit a 6 on your next shot and dropped catch that will cause your next catch be dropped. There is also an ability boost that you can buy to boost your batting ability to the fullest!

The 3D graphics in Howzat Cricket are of rather low resolution. However, considering that this game was produced in 2009 and that it is a browser game, it is forgivable... after all, the graphics work and you can still enjoy playing the game. For sound, the game has its sound muted in default. When you turned it on, you’ll get to enjoy a catchy guitar music in the “management screen”. However, the game background music stops once you’re in-game and the music is replaced by a background “noise” of a crowded stadium along with plenty of ambient sounds.
