Ready to start your relaxing mahjong holiday? Awesome! To start, you’ll first need to select a game mode. Hotel Mahjong offers 2 game modes – against the clock or relaxed (only in paid version). Naturally, against the clock refers to the timed mode version, which can be pretty challenging, while for relaxed mode, you’re free to take your time to match up the tiles. Also, to play, you’ll need to know the basics of mahjong games which are nicely described by the tutorial provided in the game.
The objective of each level or room you play is to clear all tiles from the puzzle. To remove tiles, you’ll need to match identical tiles together by clicking on both of them. Once a match is made, these tiles will be removed from the board and the counter showing your remaining number of matches will be reduced by 1.
Like any mahjong games, a tile is not selectable if there is a tile directly above it or if there are tiles adjacent on both the left and right sides of it. If any of these happen, then the tiles are known as “blocked tiles” and you cannot use them for matches. Blocked tiles are helpfully greyed out in this game. There’s also a bonus meter in this game. So, by matching up tiles quickly and consecutively, you’ll gradually increase the bonus meter to its maximum limit. Each increase on the meter will award you with 1x multiplier and you can earn a total of 11x multiplier if you can max out the bonus meter.
The most interesting aspect of Hotel Mahjong is that it provides up to 5 different types of mahjong for you to enjoy! They include classic, freecell, triple, split and river. In classic, you’ll get to play the traditional mahjong style whereby you'll need to match 2 identical tiles together that are free - or in other words, not blocked. For the freecell mode, there are holding slots provided, so that you can place some tiles into these available silver squares in order to uncover the other tiles. You can also match the tiles in these holding slots by selecting an identical tile from the board, and in effect, freeing up the holding slot.
In split mode, the board is separated into 2 areas - one of which is marked out with a golden square on the board. You'll then need to proceed to match up identical tiles but the catch here is that you must use 1 tile from the golden square part of the board in every match you make. That does ramp up the challenge the game has to offer, particularly if you play in the timed mode.
There's also the river mode. This may sound a bit complicated though, so do bear with me. In this game, you'll need to make matches, as usual, but you'll need to make sure the line that connects the two tiles has at most 2 corners. Whenever you start a match, the game will provide you with an imaginary line to show you how it'll look like if you match the tiles together. It's not an entirely unique game mode, but it can be pretty tricky at times.
However, the most unique mode in Hotel Mahjong has got to be the triple mode. In this mode, you'll need to match not two, but 3 of the tiles together to clear them from the board. This may sound easy enough but due to its twisted gameplay, it can be tough to find 3 tiles of the same type quickly and accurately... but with plenty of practice, you'll be able to do so in no time!
The game offers up to 3 stars for you to earn as you play. If you want to challenge yourself and if you are going for achievements, it’s a good idea to try to get as many stars as you can. Of course, if you missed a star in any of your previous levels, don’t worry! You can easily ride the elevator back to the floor and room where the level of the game is located in and reattempt the level. Also, for every achievement you get, you’ll earn a collectible trophy.
If you need help with any of the games, you’ll be glad to know that Hotel mahjong offers a shuffle and 3 free hints for every level you play. Interestingly, if you didn’t use any of these shuffle or hints, they will be brought over and added to the “1 shuffle and 3 free hints” on your next level. In other words, you can save up all these shuffles and hints for levels that actually needed them.
As you progress through the game, you’ll gradually unlock different backgrounds and tile sets. There are a total of 4 different tile sets and 11 different backgrounds for you to obtain. Switch out your game’s backgrounds and tile sets from time to time to spice things up a bit and keep the game fresh! There are also plenty of new locations, namely the casino, recreation room and roof terrace that you can unlock. These locations provide you with some interesting mini-games to play with if you fancy taking a quick break from mahjong.
Hotel Mahjong is a rather old game that has been given another chance at the spotlight. Quite a big part of its small community is consisted of players who have enjoyed the game, of the same title, in the past. If you fancy meeting up and chatting with your fellow players, well, the community usually hangs out at the game’s assigned forum at the Big Fish Games website. So, hop on over to the forum and start chatting with your fellow mahjong enthusiasts and who knows? You may also make some new friends along the way!
Considering that the game is pretty old, Hotel Mahjong has “okay” graphics. The background images look nice enough as well. In terms of music, the game offers a Mexican/Spanish-inspired music that is catchy and it does feel like the sort of music people dance to. However, since everything else in the game screams out “chinese”, it seems odd to have a background music that doesn’t really suit the overall theme.
In summary, Hotel Mahjong is a fun-to-play yet challenging, hotel-themed mahjong game that allows you to enjoy timed or relaxed modes along with 5 different mahjong game modes, including the unique Triple mode! There are over 100 levels for you to enjoy and you can even try to obtain 3 stars for every level you play. Collect achievement trophies, tile sets and background images as well to spice things up in the game. So, if you enjoy variety in your mahjong games, well, Hotel Mahjong is definitely the game you need to check out!
