Horse Riding Deluxe is a pretty impressive horse game that doesn’t only features a pretty large open world for you to explore, but it also houses a ton of content, whether it is challenging races or fun quests, that you can enjoy at your own pace.
Like most RPG-style horse games, Horse Riding Deluxe has many quests for you to complete. Most of them require you to go to a certain location on the map and talk to a certain NPC or to collect an X number of items. It’s simple and it can be fun, especially when you can simply ride through the quest item to collect them. There isn’t a really in-depth storyline here unlike in Star Stable, but the game does provide a nice variety of NPCs that you can talk to and interact, to a certain extent, with.
As much as I enjoy completing the simple quests in this game, Horse Riding Deluxe also provides challenging races that are usually located near or in the many points of interest on your map. Starting a race is as easy as walking your horse right up to the starting point, and after a brief countdown, the timer will start ticking and you’ve got to go through all the checkpoints to the end to complete the race.
There’s even a competitive aspect to horse racing in this game since you can earn up to a gold medal depending on how fast you complete a race. You don’t get to compete with other players but you can try to beat your old high score!
Taking care of your horse is also another important aspect of the game, but the way it is designed makes it feel less like a bothersome chore. Instead, it feels like something that you should do once in a rather long while, freeing up most of your gaming time for races, quests and generally allowing you to explore the world.
Exploring every room in a house and every points of interest can be quite rewarding too since you can usually find some collectible HRD Coins, which you can then turn in at the HRD platform at the top floor of your “home” for some nice rewards, namely horse gear like a horse blanket, a saddle and reins.
You can also customize your avatar by heading over to the top floor of your home. However, I should point out that you only get to choose from a wide selection of pre-set avatars as opposed to being able to create your own avatar from scratch.
However, despite being a pretty decent game content-wise, Horse Riding Deluxe have its fair share of flaws too. For starters, what’s up with the super weird jumping animation for your avatar? Running looks rather weird too. When it comes to horse animations, there are plenty of room for improvement as well. Turning your horse, for instance, just feels weird. Plus, for some reason, you couldn’t swim across the lake/river but you can only cross it on the back of your horse.
Personally, I would love it if my avatar can interact with the many objects in the game, besides the doors and the consumables that are being sold in the game. That lawn chair at home looks like a really great place to just chill in and take in the view, for example. Would be nice if I could just “park” my character there and just enjoy the view and music.
Horse Riding Deluxe is not an MMO and as such, you can’t play it with your friends. However, since the game’s on Steam, you can discuss the game with your fellow gamers via its discussion board.
Aside from being fun to play, the best part about Horse Riding Deluxe though is definitely the graphics. The world you get to explore is simply gorgeous and there are just so many really photogenic locations that you can just dismount and go on a photo-shooting spree. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have a “photo mode” so you can only try to turn the camera the best you can and use Steam’s in-built screen capture feature to take your pics!
In terms of its sound, Horse Riding Deluxe has a really nice selection of soothing tunes that will play in the background as you ride around. The music definitely enhances the atmosphere of the game, giving it that much-coveted feeling of tranquillity that I’ve greatly enjoyed.
All in all, Horse Riding Deluxe is a really decent addition to the niche genre of horse games in spite of its flaws. The game is very much playable and it can be really entertaining too! The game is not a free-to-play game though, but the game isn’t very pricey and for the amount of enjoyment it can provide, the cost is quite worth it. Definitely a horse game that’s worth checking out!
