Gameplay

Hidden through Time 2 is a classic-style hidden object game where you’ll need to find all the hidden objects to unlock and proceed to the next level. The game comes with four unique themes, namely an Ancient Greek mythology theme, a medieval fantasy theme, a theme based on the 1001 Arabian Nights stories, and, uniquely enough, an 80s magic theme, with each of them offering eight levels or maps to complete. Although you aren’t required to find all the items from a previous level to proceed to the next one, you’ll still need to find enough of the hidden objects before you can do so. After all, you can always return to a previous level to look for the missing item if you want.

If you’ve played its predecessor or any classic hidden object games in general, you should be able to hop into the game quickly. Hidden Through Time 2 follows the successful formula of the original, providing players with plenty of meticulously added details to examine on increasingly large maps to find all the hidden objects listed at the bottom of the screen. Each object you need to find also comes with a handy clue, which may help you figure out a general location where you can start your search. Not all clues are helpful, though, with some being way too vague to make any sense of.

As with the original game, you’ll be able to interact with various objects on the map, opening chests as well as peeking into various buildings and structures in the game to see what’s inside. Items that you can interact with on the map aren’t obviously marked, so you need to do a bit of trial and error here. You can also technically interact with the many characters and other items on the map, but those only play out a little jingle of an animation, which is cute and charming.

There’s also a secret item that you can find within each level, which is prominently highlighted in the very first level of each theme. This item is the same throughout all the levels of the same theme; for instance, in the Ancient Greek mythology theme, you’ll need to be on the lookout for a trident, while in the medieval fantasy theme, you’ll need to be looking for a red-spotted egg. The secret item isn’t optional, though – you’ll need to find it for all levels to get the “100% objectives found” achievement.

What’s different in this sequel as opposed to the original is that the game now has a weather and day-and-night system, with each level having two different “map modes” that you can switch between. Changing from, say… a sunny day to a rainy one will change the locations of various items on the map, revealing new items that you can now find. Though not everything is black and white – some objects can be found in both map modes. This is definitely an interesting and much-welcomed addition to the game.

Similarly, Hidden Through Time 2 has a level editor that allows any player to create new maps that they can then share online for other players to enjoy. Every asset in the game is readily available in the editor and there are some helpful tools there that a player can then use to manipulate assets, such as by rotating it or changing its color to suit their purposes.

Graphics/ Sound

Hidden Through Time 2 retains its adorable and charming art style that’s reminiscent of Where’s Waldo, which is one of the game’s main selling points. In terms of sound, the game provides around two soundtracks per theme, alternating between them as you progress. The music works well as a nice background tune to serenade you as you try to find everything you need. Some items on the map may also produce sound when interacted with. A voice actor was also hired to perform the narration for the game. He did an admirable job!

Conclusion

Hidden through Time 2 is a worthy successor to a breakout indie, hidden object game. The themes are on-point, the weather and day-and-night system spice up the gameplay by changing up the map, and the clues are as fun as ever to decode and figure out. Of course, the game is also well-packaged with excellent soundtracks and narration, as well as cute graphics and animations.
