Featuring a whole new storyline but with many familiar characters, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a story-driven, “choose your own adventure”-like game where you get to attend the renowned School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learn how to cast spells and brew potions, as well as make new friends (and rivals) along the way. However, the school hides many secrets and you can’t help but to be drawn to seeking them out. Be warned though! You don’t want to end up like your poor brother who was expelled for doing the same thing.

The game slowly unravels the backstory behind your character as you journey through the storyline. The story is very well written and the pace is quite good. After all, the first little “intrigue bomb” (as I like to call them) is dropped when you’re getting your first wand at Ollivanders, which is pretty early in the game.

Apparently, your brother was expelled from Hogwarts for breaking school rules while searching for the fabled Cursed Vaults. His wand was snapped and he were forced to leave in disgrace. Soon thereafter, your brother ran away from home and subsequently vanished from the face of the Earth it seems.

Although the game doesn’t really imply this, you can probably guess that you’ll likely be going after your brother at some point in the game. Of course, there will be plenty more plot twists as the intrigue and the mystery thicken.

To play, you’ll need to first create your character. Simply select a gender and then customize it with the options available. Granted that the customizations are quite limited at first, you can do so much more later on in the game. You can even change your attire if you wish, later on.

The gameplay in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a mixture of the casual storytelling that is popularized by games like Episodes and Choices, impactful decision-making that may bring to mind Telltale’s iconic games, and it also includes an energy-based task completion system which mimics mostly fashion-oriented, “rise to fame” games like Stardom: Hollywood, Desperate Housewives: The Game, etc... other similar ones.

So, in other words, you’ll basically be completing random tasks or “actions” – you can choose which ones you’ll want to do – in order to progress through a “quest” and earn Stars (the number of Stars vary from quest to quest). Actions (indicated by the glowing outlines of people or objects in the scene) require energy points to carry out and you may sometimes need to use quite a bit of these points just to complete an action.

If you think this is really simple gameplay, well, you’re not exactly wrong. It can be rather mind-numbingly straightforward and this is probably the least appealing part of the game. Also take note that This system is used for both its class-based lessons and also during supposedly intense scenes where you’re battling off the Devil’s Snare. This can be unfortunate because I for one is expecting something more reflex-based; more challenging when it comes to battles.

However, the developers did try to make things more interesting by allowing you to play some sort of a mini-game in the between the Stars you earn. For lessons that you take in Hogwarts, for instance, sometimes, the professors may pop a really easy question which you should be able to answer correctly or you may be required to “cast a spell”, meaning you need to use your finger to trace the wand movement on your screen.

At other times, you may be asked to “focus” which basically means that you need to tap the screen when the rapidly expanding and shrinking circle is within the dotted region you want. Being a student at Hogwarts, you’ll have plenty to learn. Every lesson you complete will earn you free premium currency, Rubies, which you can then use to buy premium clothes and other cosmetic items at the store. Though, most of the items in the store can be purchased using simply the game currency.

Similar to Episodes and Choices, and even Telltale’s games, every dialogue decision you make will slowly but surely shape who your character turns out to be in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. This can be seen via your character’s three attributes, namely Courage, Empathy and Knowledge. Certain decisions will allow you to earn points for one of these attributes and, depending on your choices, your attributes will eventually shape your relationships with your friends and rivals.

As you play, you’ll gradually move up to Second-year, Third-year, and so on and so forth, while unlocking new classes, adventures and mysteries to uncover.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery isn’t a very social game since it’s more like a single-player adventure. I’m also not sure if other players’ choices in your house will affect your house’s overall house points – it probably doesn’t.

That being said, the Harry Potter fanbase is a really welcoming bunch, and perhaps through this game’s third party sites like forums or fan sites, you may be able to make some new, like-minded friends.

Graphics/ Sound

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a visually impressive game for a mobile title. However, the game does require a lot of computing resources to keep everything running smoothly. So, if you are playing the game on a lower-end device, you might experience lower frame rates (jittery graphics) and some crashes (not very often though!).

In terms of sound and music, this game definitely has the best quality. Aside from the sound effects which contribute to the overall ambience of a scene, I personally enjoy the Hollywood-quality music that the game has going on in the background in every different area you head to.

This is especially true during your fight with the Devil’s Snare – That orchestral piece is amazing and truly captures what supposedly be a really gripping scene... this effect is unfortunately ruined by the slow-paced task completion system.

Oh, and if you think you recognize the voice acting in the game, well… you have very perceptive ears! The game utilizes the voices of the original cast in their voiced dialogues.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a really well-made adventure mobile game that will truly let you experience life as a Hogwarts student while giving you some intrigue on the side which you can investigate when you’re not busy being harassed by Merula or excelling in your classes.

Although the experience is nice and the story intriguing, the game is actually made for really short bursts of gameplay since your energy runs out really quickly. This type of game design might not be suitable for some gamers who prefer to play a game for say an hour or more in a single sitting. Players who are expecting a bit more action in the game will also be disappointed, like I did, especially during certain scenes that obviously should have a quicker gameplay format in place.

So, in a nutshell, I’d say you’ll want to play Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery just so you can immersive yourself in the Hogwarts experience and enjoy the brand-new storyline, but don’t expect too much of its gameplay. You’ll feel better about the game if you do that.
