Summary

In this brilliant new game you are off on a fantastic journey that brings you a cool hybrid between a CCG and a tactical game where you place your minions and spells onto a 3D battle board and move them around when they are summoned. This gives you a huge range of tactical choices and interesting gameplay combined with all the fun of a card game.

Gameplay

When you first enter the game you will be sent to a 3 part tutorial which will show you the basics of the game, from here you will receive 5 total packs to open and increase your card collection with. You have a basic set of cards for the 7 different Pantheons (classes) and these packs contain at least one rare card among the five you get.

Each pantheon represents a series of gods led by a champion, those champions are: Nu Wa (Chinese), Ra (Egyptian), Zeus (Greek), Odin (Norse), Ganesha (Indian), Ah Puch (Mayan) and Bellona (Roman). Each god has a basic power and then a series of cards in the deck, that feature creatures and spells with special abilities and stats. You can create a deck of up to 25 cards and the game gives you 5 basic decks to begin with.

In each game you begin with two mana, and have three cards in hand to play, or four if you go second with the mana crystal card. Each player takes a turn and the aim of the game is to destroy your opponents summoning stone. Each stone has 25 health and can be attacked in melee or ranged. Any unit you summon must also arrive in a square adjacent to your summon stone.

Creatures you play arrive on the board where you place them and suffer from summon sickness where they can not act. Once the next turn arrives they can move and attack, either as melee or up to 3 squares away as ranged. When your creature attacks in melee it will deal its damage value, but also receive the damage value of the enemy so there is a chance your creature will die. Ranged attackers will take damage from other ranged attacks or a creature in melee with them.

There are also lots of spells that have a variety of affects in the game such as dealing damage, stealing cards or healing. Spells also cost mana and take effect immediately. Many creatures also have special effects, such as immune, charge or warcry all of which will do different things to you or your enemies, and these card effects can really turn the tide in a game. Building a deck with a variety of options is a good start to the game and can give you a more balanced beginning.

Each game you play will earn you points, which can be spent on new packs of cards to improve your collection. There is also an arena with stronger rewards where you pick a deck from random cards and have a limit of 3 lives to claim as many prizes as you can. There is also the option to purchase a set of full cards for 5 of the pantheons, as well as buying Runes in the game which will give you a set of full cards for a specific deity. These runes will also cost real money and are available from the game or the website.

Hand of the Gods looks really good when you play, and the hybrid of styles makes for some interesting turns and gameplay. Here you have all the deckbuilding and decision making of a good CCG and then the tactical movement and attacks of a pure strategy game. Both of these combined has give the game a huge amount of depth, and means that you will never get the same game over and over again.

There are some very powerful cards that can be found, and if you are a new player it can be a struggle to get through some of the early games when your opponent has a much larger collection, but the tactical battles can swing it in your direction for you too and it is very much worth working towards your collection if you do not wish to purchase the cards out of the game. A really fun and engaging gameplay can be found here, and it makes for a great time when you play.

Community

Hand of the Gods is a relatively new game and there is a growing base of players. With a dedicated forum on the official site as well as a Facebook page there are lots of places to communicate. There is also an in game chat feature and friends list where you can play against them if you wish too. Though there is a smaller player base than some CCG’s on the market it is a good game and has a good amount of people still in the game.

Graphics/Sound

In a nutshell this game looks and plays amazingly. The 3D graphics in the game are really great and the cards look amazing. The in game movement and combat is also really nicely done, with a lot of great animations and visuals from spells and god like abilities. A huge amount of effort was put into the look and feel of the game and its shows, really amazing for what amounts to a CCG and it is a huge amount of fun to play and watch the effects.

Conclusion

There is a lot of fun to be found in Hand of the Gods with a range of decks, archetypes and combinations to try out. The tactical gameplay adds a new level of depth that can keep you playing. There is a bit of a steep learning curve to the game, but if you are prepared for that or get through it you will really enjoy this hybrid. Though not for everyone it really is worth a try if you like either styles of game.
