Summary

Hack Grid is a puzzle game that seems easy enough at first glance. After all, all you need to do is to slide differently-colored pieces together to cancel out the other, leaving only one last piece behind… it doesn’t even matter what color that last piece is! However, like any good puzzle game, every subsequent level gets devilishly trickier to solve as more new mechanics get introduced. Can you solve all 90 levels?

Gameplay

The gameplay here is easy enough to grasp. There are various colored pieces on the board which are connected via paths (the three blue-colored lines). To solve a level, the goal is to only have one piece standing… and it doesn’t even matter what color that last piece is. To do so, you’ll have to slide the pieces so that they “consume” the other piece they ram into.

As mentioned, Hack Grid starts off simple enough, but the levels do get more challenging as you play, not only because of the way the level is being designed but also the many different and new mechanics that are being introduced as you progress, turning each level more complicated as there are more factors to take into account before making a move and hence, more challenging.

The mechanics can be really tricky as well, such as the one where the pieces will change color with every move you make. In fact, in the bonus Firewall chapter, the pieces are oval in shape and will only move in one plane either horizontally or vertically. The game also offers an option to Undo the last move you’ve made if you need to use it, and a Reset button is provided in case you need to start all over.

Took a break from the game and forgot what those pieces mean? The instructions are provided on panel on the side if you need a refresher. Are the puzzles too easy for you? Well, Hack Grid also comes with a Speedrun mode where every level is timed.

Like most puzzle games, Hack Grid is a single-player game, but if you need help with a level or would like to help the dev out by pointing out a glitch or a bug, the game’s Steam page is the place to visit.

Graphics/ Sound

Personally, I’m a fan of its simple, retro-style graphics. In fact, the game is designed to look like a game displayed on those old-timey color cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. In terms of sound, Hack Grid features the kind of music that you’d hear in old-school DOS games. The music started out okay, but it got increasingly annoying and repetitive, despite having multiple music choices. Some of the retro soundtracks are just a bit more annoying than others, I guess!

That being said, you can choose what songs you want in your playlist and which to omit. You also have the option to “skip” a song by pausing and then clicking on the play button again.

Conclusion

All in all, Hack Grid is a cool hacking-themed puzzle game that delivers exactly what it promises – 90 puzzles that started off easy enough but gradually gets more challenging, all beautifully packaged in a sleek retro look and feel. If you’re a fan of difficult puzzle games, Hack Grid is a game you’ll want on your radar and in your Steam library, especially considering how cheap it is and how much worth (in terms of playtime and entertainment value) it is able to offer.
