Summary

Greak: Memories of Azur is a gorgeous action-adventure game featuring a young boy in search of his sister in a world engulfed in turmoil, no thanks to the bloodthirsty Uglars. Playing as the boy Greak, you’ll venture across various regions in Azur, exploring every inch of it for hidden stashes, completing quests, and battling enemies along the way.

Plotline

The land of Azur is home to two kinds of civilizations the Courines and the Uglars. The Courines are all about restoring life to the environment while Uglars are hell-bent on mistreating the land, destroying everything they touch.

The Courines have managed to keep the Uglars at bay for a long time, but one day, everything changed. Aided by a mysterious and powerful force, the Urlags have risen once again and this time, they managed to push back the Courines and claim Azur for their own.

One by one, the towns Courines have built fell and the Courines themselves slaughtered. Only a few outposts remained. One of them is the outpost called Raven’s Road Camp.

The story starts off with a dream where you play as Greak, a young boy, who’s in search of his missing sister. He travelled far and wide to find her but he was, unfortunately, ambushed by enemies. Thankfully, a scout from the camp spotted him and saved him.

Now, he’s determined to help the kind people who have saved him and given him shelter as they try to build an airship to escape the place before Uglars attack their outpost, while still looking for clues as to where his sister may be.

Gameplay

After learning more about the world through the game’s narrated introduction, you’ll immediately get to experience some action by playing as Greak, the young protagonist.

The game starts off like a relatively regular action platformer, where you’ll get to jump, swing your sword around, and solve relatively simple puzzles by switching characters once you manage to reunite him with his sister. This part is actually pretty similar to the gameplay in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, a favorite of mine.

In fact, you’ll get to control both characters at the same time, which is interesting, though it does complicate things a bit during combat especially considering that the sister is a magic user and deals damage from afar while the brother is a sword-wielder and does best dealing damage from a much closer range.

That said, you’ll eventually find out that **spoiler alert** it’s all just a dream and that you’ve just started out on your quest to find your sister. I mean, to be honest, no one really expects the game to end that quickly by simply handing you the keys to the end goal of the game.

Greak: Memories of Azur actually features three unique characters that you’ll eventually add to your current party of one. These characters have their own abilities and based on these abilities, you’ll get to solve puzzles and defeat enemies while taking the least amount of damage in return.

Questing is also a major part of the game since it pushes the story forward, and at times, unlocks new abilities for you to use. Most quests are pretty generic though, either requesting you to collect X number of items or to kill an X number of enemies. However, I should also mention that I’m merely an hour into the game so the quests might improve later on.

Since you won’t get a whole lot of health-restoring items in the “wild”, at least not stuff that can restore all 4 globules of your health. This is where cooking comes in. You’ll always need to provide three ingredients every time you cook and the three ingredients will determine what food items you’ll get, whether it is mushroom soup or a homemade elixir.

In a way, Greak: Memories of Azur also feels a bit like a Metroidvania in the sense that the game hides secret chests and rare flowers in places that you, if you don’t pay too much attention, might miss. Even if you spotted the items, you will still need to figure out a way to get to them, which usually involves some creative and sometimes very precise jumping. Expect to get frustrated… a lot!

Community

Greak: Memories of Azur is a brilliant single-player action-adventure game with no multiplayer features… not that it should have. Due to this, the only way to really be able to interact with the game’s community is via the game’s Steam page.

Graphics/ Sound

The gorgeous hand-drawn art in Greak is definitely one of the highlights of the game. The out-of-focus background in the distance matches well with the stuff at the front too. The soundtrack here is truly fantastic, setting the scene for each location you head to perfectly. The voice acting during the game’s intro is pretty alright as well, though, I did notice that some of the words aren’t enunciated properly. It’s probably nitpicking at this point so I won’t penalize the game for it.

Conclusion

Not only is Greak: Memories of Azur a gorgeous action-adventure game with a heartwarming story about a brother trying to reunite with his sister in a world embroiled in war and infested with dangerous creatures, it also comes with a fun gameplay that's perfectly "midcore". So, if you're into story-driven platformers, you'll want to check out this one!
