Summary
The spiritual successor of Sid Meier's SimGolf, GolfTopia not only lets you create and manage your own golf courses; you'll even get to play the holes you've created yourself. The game comes with cools visuals, wacky objects that make golfing even more fun for everyone involved, and godly abilities.
Gameplay
Golftopia is exactly as advertised and boy! It’s an incredibly fun tycoon game! It’s a wacky, neon-galore version of Sid Meier’s SimGolf where you can build your very own flashy golf club from scratch, complete with cool hoverboards, rings of fire and teleportation tubes. There are just so many different ways you can sculpt the land you’re given to create the most challenging (or not, it’s entirely up to you!) golf courses around!
The freedom to design or redesign your golf courses and even the terrain itself is astounding. There’s really nothing to stop you from creating your own ideal golf club, even if it involves lots of pits of lava or crazy courses. Golftopia really lets you unleash your creativity fully… well, at least within the confines of the game map.
Of course, if you’re like me and love getting extra challenges in tycoon games in addition to all the freedom to design, there are plenty of achievement-linked challenges that you can take it upon yourself to complete. There are, naturally, rewards involved!
Besides being able to design and build just the most impossible golf courses, you can even put your own golfing skills to the test by taking to the par yourself! Practice your swing and get that ball as close to the hole as possible. Are you as good at gold as the AI golfers who visit your courses? Well, we’ll see, won’t we?
Your golf club members aren’t spending enough on your course or are they throwing a tantrum because you’ve decided to redesign their favorite course? Well, there’s no need to fret! Being the owner of this special golf club in Golftopia also gives you some impressive godly powers. You can force your visitors to cough up more dough for instance, or you can help your golfers by magically improving their driving abilities, but be warned! Some abilities will trigger a negative reaction when used, such as the money ability, so it’s best to use it sparingly. You wouldn’t want to scare your golfers away from your club, after all!
Now, although the game starts off with some limitations and locked features, as you upgrade your club, you’ll get to offer higher level and costlier membership packages to your golfers, and get more holes to create. There are also special rewards for upgrading your club such as unlocking the putting ad driving practice ranges.
Now, the game itself isn’t too hard to play and your golf club isn’t too hard to manage. I’d say turning a profit is easy enough as long as you keep a close eye on your expenditure and your income. However, to make things more interesting, Golftopia has this natural occurrence called algae bloom that will make your golf courses aesthetically less pleasing to play in and hence, drive away your customers. There are many ways you can get rid of these troublesome algae, ranging from building laser turrets and having armies of robots tackling the issues for you to taking it upon yourself to use your godly powers to rid your map of these unsightly florae.
Community
Golftopia is primarily a single-player game, but I personally think that the game would do well if they allow players to upload their own golf clubs or courses for other players to play. That said, since the game is still in early access, there is still a possibility that this might be a game feature in the future, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Graphics/ Sound
If you’re into the whole neon/cyberpunk aesthetics, you’ll fall in love with Golftopia. The game features some pretty futuristic contraptions – teleports for instance – and hence, it’s not surprising to adopt this theme. Personally, I have a insatiable love for any and everything cyberpunk so this game is definitely right up my alley. The sound and animations are fantastic too. The attention to detail here is nothing short of impressive.
Conclusion
All in all, Golftopia is, without a doubt, THE best golf tycoon game of the year and maybe even the decade! The game doesn’t take itself too seriously, as evident in its many wacky contraptions that you can add to make your golf courses so much more insane and fun, and the neon look really makes it look amazing… if you’re into neons or cyberpunk-style visuals. Of course, the best part of the game is its brilliant gameplay. The amount of freedom you have in the game is amazing and even if you’re not the ‘too creative” sort, you’d have a blast just trying to come up with the most devilish of golf courses!
