Summary
In God Wars, the Demon King from the abyss has invaded the holy city and all that stands in the way to certain annihilation is your team of heroes. With the help of various Goddesses, you’ll defend the last sanctuary from being defiled by the demonic horde. Battle your way through unimaginable horrors, level up and improve yourself, and maybe one day, you’ll be strong enough to take the fight to the Demon King itself! Fight now!
Plotline
The storyline in God Wars is pretty cliché. In this game, apparently, the Goddesses were building a city of gods in the realm of men, but somehow, the demons found out and became incredibly jealous. In response, the egoistic Demon King rallied his minions and launched an all-out attack on the world of men, causing chaos and devastation everywhere he went.
He has even managed to subjugate several Goddesses... that is until you came along! You’ve set off to save a Goddess from one of the Demon King’s Abyss Commanders. Needless to say, you were successful, so much so that your contribution to the war effort was significant enough for you to be granted the title of Duke and given a city of your own to develop.
However, all is still not well as long as the Demon King kept the land under its thumb. It is up to you and your band of courageous heroes to fight your way to the King and bring him down once and for all!
Gameplay
To start your adventure in God Wars, you’ll first need to create a character. At the moment, the game offers 2 classes, namely the warrior and the mage, for you to choose from, with the third option, the archer, being added in the near future. Except the classes and the character name, you won’t be able to customize your character, which admittedly isn’t surprising since most of these browser-based MMORPGs tend to be designed that way.
Although you start your journey alone, as your name becomes synonymous to “demon killer”, more heroes will be inspired to join your ranks. To summon these heroes though, you’ll need to collect enough shards. Shards are usually earned during the course of the story-based quest. So generally, unless you are willing to spend a lot of real money in the game to speed things up, you can usually get more heroes in due time.
Different heroes have different strengths and weaknesses too. Thus, you’ll need to be sure to deploy them in the correct positions in your team’s formation just so your heroes will survive long enough to deal the maximum amount of damage to the enemy... preferably taking down all the demons before any of your heroes is forced to bend a knee.
Aside from getting more and more heroes, you can also upgrade the existing ones you have through a variety of means, including equipping them with gear crafted via essences of the appropriate levels, enhance them with the extra shards you get to increase the heroes’ star level and eventually their quality/grade, or by simply leveling them up using XP vials.
You can also level up their skills using hero skill books as well as upgrade the weapons and armor they have equipped (though this requires you to be level 39 and above) via forging or socketing gems. Not to mention, you can even upgrade your heroes after every 10 levels of levelling, which will assimilate all the gear your hero has on but will instead allow your hero to equip the next “level set” of gear instead.
There are plenty more ways you can improve the strength of the protagonist and the team in God Wars. Your main hero, for example, has both active and passive skills that can be upgraded. The game even gives you a taste of how mounts can help boost your team’s power, though unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to keep your mount, which to be honest, is rather disappointing. Only players who have topped-up will get the mount permanently. There are also pets, outfits and more features which will be unlocked at later levels. These will be able to give your team a much needed boost too!
As you may have guessed, like most web-based MMORPGs, Battle Rating (or some may know it as “Combat Power”) can be incredibly crucial in determining the outcome of a battle since it’s basically an indicator of how strong your team of heroes is. Of course, luck does play a role in combat as well, for instance, those elusive critical hits.
However, on contrary to what most will think, you can still play an important role in each of the battles you engage in. Yes, the game does have an auto-combat (eventually) and will basically play the game for you, but if you are to conquer the tougher levels with the perfect 3-star rating, you might want to take back the reins yourself. This is because your main hero’s abilities can be manually chosen and used in the game’s turn-based combat. Knowing which skills to use at which critical moments during combat may help you literally turn the tide of battle!
Being an MMORPG, the game provides both PvE and PvP options for players who simply want to slay some demons and players who enjoy showing other players their place, alike. That said, God Wars is a game that’s tipped much more in the PvE aspect. For PvE, the game offers not only the usual story-based dungeons as well as the accompanying tougher version of the same dungeons, the Elite Dungeons; there are also team instances (3-player per team, max), the floor-based Tower of Eternity, Abyss mines, the Divine Realm campaign and more. Even the events available in God Wars, such as the World Boss, Escort Goddess quest and the Treasure of the Gods event, are more PvE inclined.
But, this is not to say that God Wars has ignored the more PvP-loving players. At level 32, which will take quite a while to reach, you’ll finally unlock the rank-based Arena where you can fight other players’ teams in your bid to rise up the ranks and win more prestige. The prestige you get can then be spent at the prestige shop for XP vials, skill books and others.
Interestingly though not at all unique, God Wars also has a city-building aspect where you are given your own city to develop from the ground up. The city will eventually house a variety of buildings, each of which has a role to play. Most of the Altars, for example, will allow you to summon a certain type of heroes while the Temple will allow you to spend Crystals to permanently boost your main character’s many stats. The Main Hall, on the other hand, will generate some income for you over time and the amount of income you get can be increased by simply upgrading your Main Hall.
In terms of monetization, God Wars follows the formula set by many of the browser MMORPGs before it. This includes having a tiered VIP system and plenty of attractive top-up rewards, some of which may have gone into the murky waters of what many would call “pay to win”. Well, at least the game attempts to placate the general free-to-play population with tons of freebies, such as level packs, 7-day and monthly login rewards, online rewards, and many more... which I daresay, works brilliantly.
Community
Similar to many of the game’s more important features, God Wars only allow you to join a guild after you reached level 27. You could also create a guild of your own instead if you like since the cost of doing so isn’t very high. You just need 100k gold and 200 diamonds, which you should already have at that level if you don’t spend any of the diamonds while you’re leveling up.
Being in a guild or leading one greatly adds to the gameplay value of God Wars as you’ll be allowed access to many guild-only events and features, such as the Guild boss event, scavenger hunt quest and even the guild shop, which will be opened soon. You’ll also be expected to contribute to your guild by donating gold or diamonds. The contribution points you’ve earned in return can then be invested into “techniques” that are basically stat-boosting perks.
Graphics/ Sound
Despite the pretty average gameplay, God Wars has some epic soundtracks that avid fans of the group, Two Steps from Hell would instantly recognize. It’s also good to note that there’s a nice variation of inspirational music for both the holy city and your territory (a.k.a. your city) as well as for combat.
The graphics God Wars isn’t something to shout about though. The visuals aren’t bad per se, but the art style used simply gives off the same artistic vibe as almost every other web-based MMORPGs. That said, I personally like the game’s “zoomed in” effect that magnifies the final killing blow during combat. It’s different and frankly, it looks pretty cool.
Conclusion
In summary, God Wars is a pretty run-of-the-mill, web-based MMORPG that has a cliché storyline to boot. However, the game’s excellent soundtracks, nice graphics and challenging dungeons, where skills may actually play a far more important role than simply Battle Ratings, may have helped the game to redeem itself.
