With the successful release of the acclaimed God of War (2018) where Kratos delves into the world of Norse mythology, Sony followed through the hype by releasing God of War III Remastered to PlayStation Plus users. Originally released in 2010, it serves as the prequel of the 2018 title. The Remastered version boasts better and jaw-dropping graphics made for the PlayStation 4 without changing any of its exciting, fast-paced, and brutal gameplay elements.
So, is God of War III Remastered worth a download or are you better off saving a massive 40 GB chunk of space on your PlayStation 4’s hard drive? Let’s find out what it has to offer and see if Kratos’ journey is one worth undertaking.
God of War III starts off immediately where its predecessor ended: Kratos and the Titans attacking Mount Olympus, while the Greek gods make their stand. Story has always been a huge part of the God of War series, and this does not disappoint. You will be treated to an epic and brutal story featuring the famous figures of Greek mythology including the gods themselves that you will fight in boss battles. The locations you will visit include Mt. Olympus along with its various subareas like the Tomb of Ares, the City of Olympia, and the famous Labyrinth. Overall, the game provides an epic tale and setting that anyone - even those who aren’t interested in Greek mythology - will get into.
God of War III is mainly a third-person hack ‘n’ slash game, though it also features platformer and puzzle elements which are staple elements in the series. Most of the time however, you will be locked in combat against creatures in ancient Greek mythology, like harpies, minotaurs, and centaurs. Like in previous installments, fighting involves using brutal combinations - both on the ground and in the air - to devastate foes. You can also grapple opponents by pressing the circle button and execute them with a savage move.
Apart from the main weapon, the Blades of Athena, Kratos will acquire new weapons as the game progresses, with some necessary to advance further into the story. These include the Nemesis Whip and the Nemean Cestus which is essentially a pair of gauntlets. Magic spells, which are a fixture in the series, are acquired whenever Kratos gets a new weapon. However, these weapons may only be used if a certain weapon is equipped. In addition, the will also be treated to “Items” which can be unlocked when you defeat certain bosses. These include the Head of Helios, Apollo’s Bow, and the Boots of Hermes. All of which are essential to progression. Relics which Kratos acquired in the previous games also make an appearance.
Although God of War III’s hack ‘n’ slash mechanics are still its focal point, its puzzle elements stand out. Though they deviate from the blood-fueled action, they’re all unique and well-made. You won’t find similar puzzles anywhere else in the game, and their objectives vary, ranging from placing objects in certain locations to timing button presses right.
Apart from the main story, there’s also a post-game mode called the Challenge of Olympus, along with Combat Arena where players can hone their hack ‘n’ slash skills. Players can also unlock Kratos’ additional costumes and concept art of the characters upon the game’s completion.
God of War III Remastered, like all the other games in the series, is solely a single-player experience. You won’t get to play in co-op with your friends or fight against each other in PvP. However, the franchise has a dedicated fanbase and community which you can find online, whether on Reddit and other gaming forums.
God of War III Remastered is an upgrade compared to the PS3 version, with better graphics and textures that make it seem like it was made this generation. The environments and the places you will visit are incredibly immersive. The first hour or two of the game stand out the most, considering that you will be moving around and witnessing a battle of titanic proportions, with the Titans themselves climbing Mt. Olympus. The voice cast is stellar, with familiar names returning from the previous games, along with well-known actors in the industry.
Overall, God of War III Remastered is a gift to PlayStation Plus users and is a must-download for anyone, even those who have never played a God of War game before. However, if you don’t plan on revisiting its two predecessors, a bit of reading is necessary so you’ll be familiar with the prior events and the lore. Nevertheless, you can jump in without knowing anything about the events of the first two games.
The game provides an exciting and immersive dozen-hour single-player experience and serves as the perfect prequel for the 2018 God of War game. Get your hands on this PlayStation exclusive and find out what makes the entire franchise a fan favorite.
