Gameplay

Your aquarium looks a bit empty there, buddy. Thus, to start, you’ll need to get some adorable fishies for your tank! Well, don’t wait… Head on over to your favorite fishing hole to get some!

Oh, however, before you get there, you might want to drop by the shop in town to get some baits and lures, such as the all-purpose lure, corn and dough. The better the bait, the lower the by-catch rate and the less garbage you’ll catch. So, don’t fret too much in spending a bit more to get good baits and lures to ensure that every catch you make is for a fish and not for a rusty old can! There are also specific baits and lures for certain rare fishes that you can buy, which are much more expensive. Though, before you start getting rare fishes, it’s best to polish up your fishing skills first lest you waste your money on these special baits.

Breathe in that fresh air and let’s settle down for a long fishing session, shall we? Each time you successfully catch a fish, you’ll consume 1 fishing point (FP) as well as 1 bait or lure, depending on which one you’re using. This means that if you failed to catch any fish (due to *cough* lack of practice or skill *cough*), you will not lose any of your bait or your fishing point. You have a maximum number of 16 fishing points and you will regain them at a rate of 1 per 5 minutes.

How do you to fish in Free Aqua Zoo? Well, you should start by scanning the waters for any shadow of a fish. If you spot one, click on it to cast your line! Then, wait until the fish took your bait. A red bar will pop up right beside your bait or lure when it is ready for you to reel your fish, or trash depending on your luck, in! Click and hold the mouse button to reel in your line, but you should keep an eye on the moving indicator on the reel meter. Be sure to only reel in your fish when the moving indicator is in the green zone on the reel meter or you’ll risk losing your fish.

Sometimes, you may get the same type of fish repeatedly. If you don’t want any of the fishes you caught, you can throw them back into the pond. However, this action will cost you money and you won’t get back your bait, so it isn't a very beneficial (to you) move. Furthermore, as you level up, you will eventually be able to have access to better fishing holes as well as to more variety of fishes to catch!

Once you’re done fishing, you make haste and get back to your virtual aquarium to put your new fishes in their new home! Did you hear that? That’s the sound of your fish’s stomach rumbling! You've got to feed them from time to time and you’ll get points for that too! To feed, just click on the fish food and click to it to pour at the top of the aquarium. There are many different types of fish food that you can buy and feed to your fishes and of course, the more expensive your fish food is, your fishes will remain full for a longer period of time.

Now that their bellies are filled, you should also tend to their emotional needs too! Interact with your cute fishies by clicking on them and selecting cuddle, poke or both! Then, once the fish’s experience bar is full, select ‘level up’ option to level up your fish.

Yikes, take a look at the cleanliness meter - the tank is getting dirty! You should keep your tank clean so that your fishes will grow healthily. If you see any signs of grime, use your sponger to clean it.

You can also customize your fish tank by purchasing new backgrounds and decorations from the shop and placing them in your aquarium. The more decorations you have, the higher the comfort level of your aquarium will be! This means that you will get more points when you interact with your, now, happy fishes. Not to mention, a really fine looking aquarium requires decorations and that’s more than a good enough reason for you to start decorating your virtual aquarium! If you ran out of space, you could spend some money to upgrade your fish tank. Upgraded fish tanks will be able to provide more room for your fishes and decoration.

However, those new fish tanks do cost quite a lot. Thus, you’ll need to find some means to get your hands on some money… not illegally, of course! To earn money in Free Aqua Zoo, you can serve customers who will visit you at your aquarium or will be wandering around in town. You will have to ensure that you have the fish they want and that the fish is of the correct level. Then, get that fish out of the fish tank and into a baggie by clicking the ‘store’ option. Deliver the fish to your customers and collect your payment! There is also a fish market whereby you can sell your more exotic fishes to other players for a much higher price. There are even achievements that you can earn by playing in Free Aqua Zoo.

The graphics in the game is pretty good for a casual browser-based game. The fishes look extremely well-polished and cheerful due to their bright colors. In terms of sound, Free Aqua Zoo provides a pretty nice music that contains elements of jazz and blues, but the music seems to be a tad bit too repetitive! The game has quite the variety of music too. While you’re at the fishing hole, you’ll be listening to country-type music instead. Though, rather unfortunately, the music may be a bit too repetitive as well!
