Summary

First Encounter Assault Recon or F.E.A.R. Online is a very fast-paced and challenging horror-themed MMOFPS game that features, similarly to other games in the F.E.A.R. franchise, quite a lot of glorious gore. The game provides not only heart-stopping PvP matches with a variety of interesting game modes, it also offers exciting PvE scenarios for teams of 4 players to play in too! Moreover, the game has a range of familiar guns, knives and grenades that you can permanently purchase and use. There is even a crafting system, which allows you to use materials earned from playing matches to create weapons that are not sold in the in-game shop. Furthermore, the game features a psionics system as well, which will provide your character with additional special abilities based on which psionic item you’ve equipped. Can you overcome your fear and fight the horrors that are spawned in the dark? Play F.E.A.R. Online to find out!

Plotline

Fairport was once a nice city to live in centered on the Armacham Technology Corporation (ATC) company headquarters. Then, Paxton Fettel, a person with advanced psychic abilities, shows up with an army of Replica soldiers and chaos erupted! The government sent the F.E.A.R. team and the delta force to deal with the problem.

The F.E.A.R. team managed to eliminate Fettel, however, the team accidentally released another psychic subject, a 5-year-old Alma Wade. They caused a nuclear explosion to prevent Alma from escaping and it leveled half the city. It is this explosion that had released all manner of strange creatures and apparitions from the secret laboratories in ATC. It is obvious that ATC has been up to some truly frightening and weird human experimentation, not sanctioned by the government. In an attempt to eliminate evidence, ATC’s hired mercenaries are sent to destroy places containing sensitive information and killing anybody that had any knowledge of these dangerous secrets.
To combat this, the government sent another F.E.A.R. team, but this team is augmented with special psionic abilities. Their orders is to engage the ATC soldiers to reclaim any surviving secret research documents as well as any experimental horrors that are released into Fairport. The war between the F.E.A.R. team and the ATC as well as between the monstrous mutants and the humans are what you’ll be joining in! So, are you ready to face your fear?

Gameplay

To start, it is best if you go for the brief 5-minute tutorial to learn the in-game controls, the different weapons available in the game as well as some nice lore in the F.E.A.R. franchise… you will get some extra in-game money if you complete the tutorial as well!

The controls in F.E.A.R. Online follow the generic controls in a standard MMO shooter game. This means that you’ll be using WASD to move, ctrl to crouch, shift to sprint and etcetera. There are a couple special hotkeys though, which include pressing ‘F’ to perform a stealth kill if you managed to sneak up behind an enemy. There is also a key for switching on your flashlight since the maps in the game can be pretty dark. The loadout in the game is pretty much standard as well – you have your primary weapon slot, your side arm and a grenade slot.

Unlike other MMO shooter games however, F.E.A.R. Online offers both PvP and PvE game modes to its players. For PvP, you’ve got your standard deathmatches, demolition and knife fights, and while for PvE, you are given 3 scenarios of varying difficulty, namely firestorm (easy), tunnel (normal) and subway panic (hard). Deathmatch involves an 8 vs 8 team match (1 round only) whereby the objective of the game is to get to 100 kills or the highest number of kills within 10 minutes. 10 minutes may seem like a very short time, however, considering that the very small map is designed in such a way that encounters with members of the opposing team happen very quickly and frequently. In demolition, your team’s objective is either to stop the enemy from planting the bomb or to get your team to plant the bomb! Knife fights are pretty interesting melee-orientated matches and allow you to knife other players.

PvE scenarios are pretty much fixed mini-missions for a 4-player squad that you can do for extra experience points, materials and money. Each scenario you enter will consume 1 out of the 3 operation plans that you’re given. Don’t worry though, these plans will regenerate after 8 hours, but if you cannot wait, you can get it at the shop with APs. As aforementioned, there are 3 scenarios of different difficulties. However, although firestorm is listed as easy, it can be pretty difficult if you’re not an experienced FPS player. Thus, the PvE aspect of F.E.A.R. Online is not the type of mode that you can just faceroll over.

As you accumulate experience points, you will level up and earn some sweet weapons (with limited durations though – 1 day) to use as well as some extra in-game currency. You will also unlock new guns and other items at the shop that you can buy. The game sells a range of weaponries, which includes most, if not all, of the standard weapons like side arms, shotgun, sniper rifle and assault rifles, at the shop. There are also grenades in this game. Half of these weapons can be bought with in-game points while half can be bought using Aeria Points (AP) (real life currency).

The guns that are bought using in-game points have the same stats as the weapons purchased using APs… the only 2 differences between these 2 methods of purchasing guns are that weapons that are purchased using APs have a nicer-looking paint on the gun and that you can buy and use better weapons without needing to wait for the necessary level to unlock them. Thankfully, all of the weapons you buy are permanently unlocked. With in-game points, you can also buy cosmetics and accessories for your characters, psionic items or even new characters (characters cannot be permanently purchased).

F.E.A.R. Online also has a very interesting crafting system whereby you can collect crafting items to create items (mainly guns) that cannot be bought at the shop by playing both PvP and PvE matches. You can also gather the materials via direct purchase using APs as well!

One of the more unique parts in F.E.A.R. Online is its psionics system. There are up to 9 different types of psionics that you can equip, such as fragproof, and there are 3 tabs or tiers of them on your psionics screen. These items are, in no way, overpowered and they can be obtained by buying them using in-game points or as a reward from special missions and promotional events. You can then equip these psionic items to your character to give him a small passive special ability. Different characters have different number of psionic slots, thus, you may want to get new characters from the store to get more psionic slots. As a free-to-play player, you will already have 2 characters for free that you can use.

Community

Since F.E.A.R. Online is relatively a new game (it is only less than 5 months’ old), its community isn’t as huge. However, it is currently increasing its player base steadily and may even get to the hundred thousand range pretty soon. Players in this game can communicate in-game via text chat or they could band up into clans. In fact, joining a clan in this game can be very beneficial to you as you will gain access to clan matchmaking as well as clan wars. F.E.A.R. Online is also aiming to be recognized as an eSport and is currently recruiting clans to join in its second ESL Cup tournament that will be held next month.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in F.E.A.R. Online has a very grainy look that mimics all the games in the F.E.A.R. franchise. Plus, the game puts out quite a lot of gore. Similarly to other F.E.A.R. games, there is plenty of blood splattered all around the environment, including on your screen whenever you made a kill. If you made a headshot kill, your victim’s head will get blown off and roll around on the ground. The gory scenes fit perfectly to the horror theme of the game. There are also plenty of very dark sections in the map that are perfect for hiding and ambushing the enemy when coupled with character outfits that are very dark. For these parts of the map, you may want to utilize the flashlight that you have on your character or you could just turn up your gamma.

The music in the background is not exactly memorable but it functions as equally well as the graphics – it brings out the horror in the game and makes your heart pump just a tad bit faster! Not to mention, the game has different sound effects for different weapons when fired, thus you can easily discern which weapons your opponents are using by just listening to the sound of the gunfire.

Conclusion

In short, F.E.A.R. Online is an excellent horror-themed MMOFPS game that had stayed true to the F.E.A.R. franchise by providing a gameplay that fans of F.E.A.R. will definitely enjoy! There are both PvE and PvP games with a range of fun game modes for you to play in. The game also offers a plethora of weapons, psionics (which augments your character) as well as armor and cosmetic accessories that you can buy and equip. The game even boasts of having a crafting system, which allows you to craft items, mainly weapons that you cannot buy at the shop. If you love the games from the F.E.A.R. franchise or that you love games with plenty of gore and glory, this is definitely one game that you mustn’t miss out on! Try it for free today!
