Featuring plenty of game elements including some that are completely unique, Fancy Blast is a beautiful and fun, fairy tale-themed match-3 puzzle game that is perfectly designed to give players the challenge they seek, especially for those who have “been there and done that” so many times and are tired of the casual games that are just not exciting enough.
As it has a fairy tale theme, this game groups all of its match-3 games into various worlds, whereby each world is dedicated to a specific popular fairy tale. The fairy tales you can expect to see in this game include fan-favorites like Little Red Riding Hood, Wizard of Oz and more. In this game though, you don’t exactly play as the characters in the story themselves but more of a visitor – in the form of an adorable little girl called Aurora – who is there to help the characters with a specific task, which usually involve building something.
In terms of gameplay, each match-3 level in Fancy Blast is pretty much what you’d expect in a casual match-3 puzzle game. You’ll need to match 3 or more similar pieces to remove them from the playing area. However, there are plenty of special pieces that can clear entire rows or columns, or even blast away at surrounding tiles if you managed to match 4 or more pieces instead.
For instance, if you combine 4 pieces in a square form, you’ll get the Owl which can clear a random piece that will help you to achieve your level goal. If you match 5 pieces in a line though, you will get a Colorful Yarn that works by removing all pieces of the same color as the one piece it is then swapped with. Best of all, these special superpower pieces can also be combined to produce a much more impressive effect – an effect that may clear your entire board in seconds!
As you may expect, the levels in this game have objectives that you’ll need to complete in order to move on to the next level. Sometimes, you are asked to collect all the multicolored watering cans; at other times, you are asked to grow all the roses (you can do so by making a match nearby). You may even be asked to collect valuable relic fragments by dropping them to the sacks at the bottom of the board.
You also have limited number of moves to fulfill your goal, so make sure to plan your moves carefully. If you have extras, then good – you can convert them into bonus points in the Fancy Blast round at the end of the game, but if not, you’ll risk losing a life… especially if you don’t have enough gold to buy more moves. Lives can be regained simply by waiting but if you really want to play, you can buy more using premium currency or pester your friends to send you some for free.
Thankfully, there are tons of boosters, such as the hammer and extra special pieces, to help you along the way so you needn’t “waste” a life unnecessarily. You are given some boosters for free at the start but since they can be incredibly hard to come by (for free at least), you might want to only use them at a time when having a booster can make a difference to the outcome of a level.
Fancy Blast seems to be quite popular among casual gamers but it’s still not anywhere close to the popularity enjoyed by games like Candy Crush Saga. Regardless, they do have a healthy and engaged player base.
The graphics and sound in Fancy Blast are simply amazing. I love how well the music fits with the overall fantasy theme of the game. The girl, Aurora, is very well animated too, but I do have a little bone to pick with the graphic designer… why are her pigtails lopsided in the game? Her pigtails look like the clock hands on a broken clock that’s stuck at the 3 o’clock position.
All in all, I personally think that it’s a bit unfortunate that this game has a pretty generic match-3 puzzle game title and as such, it doesn’t exactly have the biggest player base. The game however is a blast to play even for someone who has gradually become a bit bored with the usual features that most match-3 games have.
