Summary

Fae Farm is a delightful and cozy life sim that’s quite similar in nature to games like My Time at Portia. In this game, you decide to set off on a journey to take up an offer to resettle in a friendly remote island community, only to find that you’re trapped on the island and will have to build a new life for yourself there. Foster relationships with the locals, date, and even marry them; go spelunking in the dungeons to mine for precious ores; fish and gather a variety of materials; rear various animals, craft a myriad of foodstuff and other items; decorate your home and your farm, and even have fun hunting down and collecting critters!

Plotline

One day, while walking along the beach, you came across a message in a bottle. The message invites you to resettle on a faraway land that’s filled with adventure. You decided to take up the offer and set off on the journey. However, the journey isn’t as smooth as you’d hoped and your boat ended up shattered by a vicious whirlpool. Clinging on the wreckage for dear life, you finally made it to calmer waters where you saw the town you’re heading to – Azoria!

With no way to leave the island, you decided to make do with what you have and build a new life for yourself there.

Gameplay

As a life sim, there’s truly a host of activities you can do in Fae Farm. Not only will you be able to gather various materials from the environment itself, like wood, plant materials, soil, fish, fruits, and more, but you’ll also get to set up your own farm by building farm plots, planting seeds, and watering them until they mature. Of course, you can also add a variety of fertilizers to either increase the yield of your crops or to hasten its growth. Aside from basic crops like turnips and beans, you can even grow and continuously harvest a selection of fruits from fruit trees.

Although you can get most of the raw materials or ingredients you need from the environment right from the get-go, there are some, like bamboo, that are “locked” behind more advanced tools. You can upgrade your starter tools via the local blacksmith as long as you’ve got all the materials needed. For the upgrades, you’ll need access to the dungeons a.k.a. the caves or the mines where you can mine for precious ores like copper. These ores, when turned into metal bars, can then be used to upgrade your tools.

However, you should know that the caves are where the locals have shunned all the hostile items that have been animated by the wild magic coursing through the island. Some light combat, which befits the game’s cozy theme, is to be expected, but it’s simple to make easy work of your enemies with a few timely whacks from your magic staff. You could use that very staff to dispel magical thorns, grown by the same wild magic, that block your path by whacking at them too.

You’ll be able to rear several types of animals at your farm in Fae Farm as well. Naturally, you’ll need to make sure that their needs are met daily, whether it is making sure they are fed or simply petting them, and they will provide you with their respective produce, which ranges from eggs to wool, in return. In fact, you could actually get a registered animal at your farm to follow you around in the game if you so wish. They aren’t as helpful when it comes to chores around the farm, but they sure make for a fun little companion to have!

With so many items at hand, you can then set up various crafting stations to turn those raw materials into more valuable goods. These goods can then be used (by you!), or sold at the local town square by placing the goods on the tables provided. You can also furnish and decorate your own home by crafting the stuff you need. You’ll start off with a limited selection of items you can craft, but you can easily increase your crafting prowess by finding and collecting blueprints that are scattered across the island.

Like more life sims, you can forge relationships with the many friendly locals on the island by chatting them up or by gifting them something they love. Note that this only applies to NPCs that aren’t vendors in the game, so you can’t get discounts on goods by being “close buddies” with a vendor. However, unlike some games within the genre, you could actually get to a point where you not only could date the NPC you like the most – you could even eventually marry them! That said, the NPCs in this game can be a bit on the shallow side, which doesn’t really make you want to get to know them better.

Considering there are so many NPCs in this game, Fae Farm helpfully provides a map that enables you to easily place an indicator to show you where an NPC is. By simply following the indicator in the game, you can easily find who you need to find, whether it is just to have a chat or to complete a quest. And yes, the game has a nifty quest tracker, complete with separate tabs to help you track both the main story quests and the optional side quests, that you can use.

Do you love collecting things just for the sake of it? You can do so here as well! Aside from the many different kinds of fish you can fish up from different bodies of water, including rare, “sparkly” ones, Fae Farm also has many different kinds of critters, from butterflies to magical frogs, that you can catch using your bug net. Some critters can be a bit trickier than others to catch though, such as the rare magical frogs, since they will disappear in a puff of smoke if they are alerted to your presence. This is why the game has a sneak option that you’ll do well to use if you want to increase your chances of snagging a rare.

Almost all of the fun activities you can do in Fae Farm require energy to perform. You can easily replenish your energy by either consuming food or collecting energy pick-ups that are sometimes scattered around the map. At the end of each day, you’ll also (be forced to) go to sleep and have your energy completely replenished. Note that, unlike some life sims, there’s no option for you to stay out the entire night without succumbing to tiredness in this game.

As a little bonus, I really like that the game automatically switches to the right tool whenever you’re out foraging for wood, stone, or plant materials, or even when you want to water some crops. The only tools you have to scroll through are the bug net, the fishing rod, and the staff.

Community

If you love playing games with a friend or friends, know that you can do just that in Fae Farm! The game supports co-op, but there’s a bit of a catch – in order to play online with friends, you need to create a Phoenix Labs account first. Joining a world with friends is easy enough, but there might be some issues with connection stability, with some players complaining that their friends are being dropped from the game, and essentially losing all their progress in the process.

Graphics/ Sound

Fae Farm has adorable and cartoonish graphics that look colorful, giving the world a vibrant and lively feeling. The characters in the game also look unique enough not to look like clones, and I like that not every place in the game is just bright and colorful – there are some darker locations as well here.

In terms of sound, the game mainly opts for ambiance with plenty of sound effects to bring your surroundings to life, whether it is the sound of the water gushing from the waterfall or the sound of your character’s shoes as he/she/they run across the pavement. Don’t get me wrong, though! The game still have some pretty good and chill soundtracks, but they aren’t really the main focus here, as evidenced by how soft (volume-wise) they are by default.

Conclusion

As an avid fan of cozy life sims, Fae Farm manages to hit all the right spots with a co-op-supported gameplay that is fun, relaxing, and fulfilling, despite being slightly grindy, while you learn more about the island you found yourself on. Considering how easily you could sink hours upon hours into this game, I’d say the hefty price tag that comes with the game is also very worthwhile. If you love life sims with plenty for you to do, that’s the perfect antidote to a stressful day, you’ll want to try Fae Farm!
