Summary

Featuring a theme that sees two worlds – modern day and medieval fantasy - colliding, DYSPLACED is a sandbox RPG where you, playing as an outworlder-turned-Guardian, are summoned from your paycheck-to-paycheck life to help save a realm from being consumed by darkness. Explore vast, semi-destructible open worlds and maybe find hidden troves of treasures, complete quests, gather resources, craft a variety of tools, weapons, and armor, build settlements, and level up to unlock new abilities and skills so you can take on increasingly more difficult enemies. Will you be able to rise to the challenge, save the realm, and perhaps even make your way home?

Plotline

You are a seemingly average nobody on modern earth, trying to make ends meet while maintaining the dilapidated home you own (possibly inherited). However, one day, while trying to stop your home from falling apart, a tear in the dimensional fabric appeared, and monstrous creatures started shambling through. Leaving you with little choice, your only hope is to follow a ghostly spirit who, for some reason, seems to think you’re the Guardian she’s seeking to help save her realm.

A quick segway to the backstory – Apparently, the realm the spirit lives in was previously terrorized by a powerful being known as Areimanos, the Sovereign of the Eternals. With great effort and sacrifice, he was eventually sealed away, but this doesn’t stop fanatical cultists from The Cult of the Bleeding Eye from building spires to weaken Areimanos’ seal with the ultimate goal of letting their lord walk the earth freely once again.

The only few people standing in their way are The Watchers and this spirit… and now, they have their secret weapon – You!

In terms of its storyline, DYSPLACED is practically oozing in rich lore. There are so many layers to the story of the game, each of them dished out nicely as main quests, and yet it is open enough that you can forge your heroic story, though this isn’t a choice-based game, as you play. The side quests in this game have their own little stories as well, but these are fairly forgettable, and they don’t tie back to the main storyline in any way.

Gameplay

Before you start, you’ll first need to create your character. There are some nice choices available, but I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t seem to rotate my character, so see her from the sides. That said, it’s just a minor annoyance and not really a biggie.

After you play through the interactive tutorial-slash-backstory part of the game, you’ll find yourself portaled to a huge open world to quest and explore. There are lots of resources to gather in this game, from destroying barrels and whatnots (yes, the game environment is semi-destructible!) to fishing and hunting down local fauna, to even mining and digging. Most of them come from the destructible environment, so make sure to wreck everything new you see – you might just uncover a new resource!

All of these resources can then be turned into more useful objects, like smelting ores into bars, which, in turn, can be shaped into stronger tools or even advanced components needed for upgrades. You can also cook food… or eat them raw - You won’t get ill from eating raw fish here! Crafting is mostly instant, but even for those that aren’t, such as smelting, the game helps you out with automation.

You won’t be able to gather everything the game has to offer right from the start, however. This is where progression really shines! The game ties resource extraction with the “power” (damage dealt) of your tools. So, having weaker tools, such as an axe, will mean that you can only chop down tree stumps instead of whole trees.

As you progress, you’ll unlock better tools that will allow you to gather faster, gather new (and generally better) resources, or tap into bigger resource nodes. At one point, you’ll be able to farm as well! Of course, and this goes without saying, you need to use the right tools for the job at hand, too! You can’t use a hammer on a tree and expect to get wood, for instance.

Considering how much stuff you can gather in this game, even right from the start, the starting inventory you get in your backpack can feel a bit small. Thankfully, it’s easy enough to upgrade your backpack using the resources gathered. Of course, subsequent upgrades will require more advanced materials, so you can’t just unlock all the upgrades at once. There’s also a universal stash chest that holds a limited number of items. However, unlike the backpack, where each item has a limited stack number, the items in your stash can apparently be stacked way beyond that limit.

Plus, as a universal stash, you can access everything stored within if you access another universal stash in another world, or even while crafting at a crafting station, and accessing your upgrades at the Knowledge Tree (more on this in a bit!).

As a sandbox game, DYSPLACED not only has destructible environments (well, almost everything can be destroyed) but it also allows you to build and essentially set up camp wherever you like (again, “almost everywhere”). The game does, however, impose a maximum limit of items you can build so as not to overwhelm the system, which may bog down your game with frame rate issues. Rest assured, though, that limit is quite high, so you can have fun building outposts across each world you visit.

This camp is more important than simply serving as the center of your base of operations – the campfire itself is basically the game’s (not so quick) Save button. If you want your progress saved, make sure to check in at a campfire often. It also allows you access to your Knowledge Tree, where you can invest resources you’ve gathered into new abilities, skills, passive perks, and even unlock new technologies, such as bronze tools or animal traps. This is where, aside from the main questline, progression is measured.

Now, an RPG isn’t complete without some combat. Combat in DYSPLACED is surprisingly more in-depth than it appears, and isn’t as punishing as, say, a souls-like. Yes, there are times when you just need to “tank and spank”, especially once you have a strong enough weapon/tool (yes, tools can also double as weapons) and are facing a weaker enemy. But when you’re taking on stronger enemies like the Cultist Sergeant or Enforcer, or even find yourself overwhelmed by sheer enemy numbers, you have plenty of ways to avoid taking damage, whether it is by blocking a blow with your shield, dodge-rolling away, or simply outrunning them.

Every action taken, offensive or defensive, during combat will consume stamina, however, and you have a limited amount of it. Stamina auto-replenishes itself over time, but you’ll have to give it some time to do so.

Accidentally aggroed a bunch of Shamblers and got yourself killed? Well, death isn’t as punishing here as I’d expect either… and thankfully so! Instead of wiping all of your inventory, you get to keep at least half of it, with the other half stored (and very much retrievable) in a tombstone located near or at the place you’re killed. The “near” here mostly applies to deaths by drowning since tombstones don’t spawn in water.

All that said and done, exploration is, without a doubt, the highlight of the game. There are just so many points of interest on the map to check out, and exploration is very well rewarded here. There are well-hidden reward chests to find, and environmental puzzles, including Sokoban or jumping puzzles, to solve. The game has great map UI and quest tracking, allowing you to easily keep track of the location of quest locations and givers on the map without blocking out other details in a way that’s similar to maps in MMORPGs. Aside from quests, you can even pin trackers for upgrades that you plan to work on.

Considering how large each map can be, here’s a quick tip: make sure to turn on Toggle Run. You’ll definitely be doing a whole lot of running, but don’t worry – you’ll get to unlock mounts later on!

DYSPLACED features many worlds, each with its own biome and maps. Although they are pretty similar to each other, there are some unique additions, like nodes to obtain more advanced resources, that make them different enough. That said, as the game is still in early access, not every world is available to the player. In spite of this, you can easily get tens of hours of playtime with the current content, more so if you’re an achievement hunter, since the game has medals you can grind and collect.

Graphics/ Sound

DYSPLACED uses a stylized top-down 3D perspective that blends fantasy beauty with creeping darkness. There’s also a unique visual identity in how two worlds collide - a medieval fantasy realm infused with modern objects. The environments here are semi-realistic but are well-defined and readable. This clarity is crucial considering the game’s standout feature: nearly everything in the world is destructible.

In terms of sound, the game leans into a moody, atmospheric soundscape to match its world on the brink of collapse. Personally, I’d also recommend switching on their AI voice-overs. This really helps with immersion… well, mostly… some of the generated voice-overs sound flat. That said, this is likely temporary, and they will eventually get professionals to do the voice-overs later down the roadmap.

Conclusion

DYSPLACED stands out among similar RPGs through its destruction-driven sandbox design. Combined with an atmospheric soundscape and flexible survival systems, the game delivers an experience that’s equal parts exploration, creativity, and controlled chaos, where progress often means breaking things down before building something better.
