Plotline

Just after the Tournament of Power, another is begun by King Kai as he hosts the Tournament of Time. Here fighters from all over the galaxy, and different eras of time will come together to claim the ultimate dragonballs. With these they can have any wish granted, and they are all flocking to Earth for the fight. Enter Shallot, a Saiyan with no memory as you discover everything about him, and the tournament.

Gameplay

When you enter the game you are taken straight to the action, as you become Shallot awakening for the first time on Earth. Immediately you are met by some familiar characters as you begin to explore your surroundings and try to remember. This begins your adventure, and you are also able to go through some quick levels as Kai will show you how to play the game. This functions as both your tutorial and the start of the story.

From here you are starting to assemble a team of different characters to use in each of the battles. You are given a couple to begin with and access to the ability to summon more random allies to your cause. These characters each have a specialty and an elemental alignment, both of which have an important part to play as the game develops. Once you have 6 characters they go into a team that you can use to complete the different battles. You can also have up to 4 different teams in place to maximise bonuses.

Each character has a series of moves, a star rating and an xp breakpoint. If you max out their xp they will gain a new star and become more powerful. This is the best way to get your characters up to top ratings as fast as possible. XP is earned in battles and from the training section of the game. The higher the xp level the higher the battle rating too, so it all has a positive effect on your team and the game.

When you have your team it is time to go into the most fun part, the fighting. Here you have a team of 3 to 6 characters depending on your level, and you fight with each of them and can swap them at will. Swapping them will help keep your overall health up and give you a different set of bonuses depending on what you are fighting. You can only have 1 hero active at a time, and they will have 2 important factors working for them.

You have your energy bar, which will start at 100 and go down for each skill that you use during the battle. The bar refills, and you can also choose to stand still and charge it, though this leaves you open to enemy attacks a good timed charge can give you a win. The other is the Arts that they use. These are their skills, and mostly are melee or ranged damage with a couple of special moves.

When you are in the battle, it is played out in real time. The Arts appear in a list as it goes on, and you spend energy to use them. If you wish to attack simply use the arts card. If your enemy attacks you can move from side to side to avoid the attack, or take the hit if you need to and do your own attacks. The vanishing gauge will deplete as you dodge, but swapping characters or time will refill it for you. This dodging and using arts is a fast paced action that requires both skill and timing.

At the end of each battle you will be awarded Chrono Crystals which are the main currency of the game, as well as coins and experience and a chance of a huge variety of useful items. The Chrono Crystals are used to summon new allies for you as well as spent on some activities to boost your characters. Coins are spent in the store on items, item upgrades and useful tools. The Chrono Crystals can also be purchased for real money if you wish too.

Outside of the story battles there are pvp matches, ranked and unranked where you can fight real time with other players around the world. Topping the ranks will give a huge range of rewards for you, and you can also choose to battle your friends. The ranking system is divided into seasons lasting about 3 weeks, and at the end you are able to claim your rewards.

With a lot of fun stuff to do outside of the battles too, you have a huge amount of ways to improve your characters, and the story plays out like an anime cartoon, with the action controlled by you and you get to meet a lot of really popular characters, and defeat a lot of them too. With a simple control structure, easy to read battles and active hybrid style there is a lot going for this game and a lot for you to do.

Community

As this is set in the world of Dragonball Z you can imagine it is a very popular game. As such it has a huge following and player base, with ways to chat to your friends in the game and lots of support options outside of it. You can find good team builds, helpful hints and a lot of conversation about the game as well as the official Facebook pages and other media. All in all a huge game with a lot of players means you have an active and very dedicated community.

Graphics/Sound

Dragon Ball Legends is a really good looking game, here you have the much loved anime style, with all the heroes and villains you know and can play with. The battles are action packed and there are a lot of cut scenes and huge arts combos that look stunning. The menus is a little bland but the rest of the game makes up for this and the main part, the battles look really great and feel good when you play them.

Conclusion

For a tactical team battle game Dragon Ball Legends has something fresh about it, and the lore and story of the universe really are exciting to play through. The story is long and a lot of fun to play with its own unique rewards too. All in all a fun game with a lot to do you are in for a good time with this one.
