Summary

Door Kickers 2: Task Force North is the highly anticipated sequel to the popular tactical game, Door Kickers. Take charge of a military special ops team as you embark on various missions targeting a Middle East-based terrorist network. Kick down doors, flashbang groups of tangos, and rescue hostages in this thrilling tactics game!

Gameplay

As someone who has always enjoyed tactical games, have heard a lot of positive things about the original Door Kickers but have yet to actually play it, this sequel does a pretty good job of easing a newcomer into the game. The first mission pack is essentially filled with mission that are designed to double as interactive tutorials. As you progress, the game will introduce more game features as the training wheels are slowly taken off.

The gameplay mostly involves directing your soldiers to clear rooms and spaces, and making sure they check not only all the nooks and crannies that a hostile might be hiding in, but also cover each other, especially during a breach or a firefight. The game helpfully provides you with a pause option so you can adjust your strategy as you go, and a way to sync up your units’ movements and actions. There are even times when you can deploy sniper support, to either help you monitor enemies in sight or to take them out when needed.

Being well-trained soldiers, your units will automatically eliminate any tangos – or hostiles – when encountered, but the trick here is to make sure they see the enemies first before the enemies see them. One way to do that is to use various consumables at your disposal to help even out the odds when facing overwhelming numbers, such as lobbing a flashbang at the enemies so as to give your team enough time to take out multiple tangos without getting riddled by a hail of return fire.

You can even use night vision goggles during night missions to give your team an advantage. Naturally, by taking out enemy fuses, you can plunge your targets into darkness, giving you even more of an upper hand. However, sometimes things don’t go according to plan, and if your entire team was wiped out, you’ll automatically lose the game. That said, as long as you have a single soldier left, you can still complete the main directive and subsequently complete the mission, so to speak, though the odds would definitely be stacked against you now.

Each mission is fairly straightforward though they do come in a nice variety, ranging from straight-up door-busting and bullets-spraying, a.k.a. Rambo-style, to more delicate operations that may require a near surgical precision, coordination, and timing, such as in hostage rescue situations or covert missions where you don’t want to alarm the enemies early on.

The mission set-up is also pretty astounding here. There are just so many ways you can customize your team and their respective loadouts… all within the parameters of the mission, of course. After all, you can’t just deploy every member in your team considering that you have 20 soldiers, each with their own role specializations (assault, support, marksman, grenadier), in total at your disposal.

For loadouts, you’ll start off with the standard “default” fare, but as you complete missions, you’ll earn stars and possibly even medals to use. These can be, in turn, invested into unlocking new equipment, including weapons, weapon attachments, and armor. Once unlocked, the item can then be equipped by any unit in your team. Note that how many stars, out of the three per mission, you get in a mission depends entirely on how well you do. Not having one of your teammates die is, for instance, vital if you want to get maximum stars.

Similarly, up to three medals per mission can be earned by completing the challenges. Ranging from No Pause to Lone Wolf, these challenges really amp up the difficulty of each mission, giving hardcore fans of the game something to strive for. There’s also a skill tree-like upgrade system called the Doctrine that allows you to further improve and specialize your team and your approach.

Now, as fun as I’ve had with the game, the controls can be a bit difficult, at least for me, to remember. For example, I kept accidentally “moving” my units when all I wanted them to do is to look at something. Don’t get me wrong – the tutorial did a great job in introducing the basics, but I found myself struggling with the more complicated features, such as the “go code sync”. Despite my best efforts, I still couldn’t seem to get it to work the way I expect them to, like the case when I wanted Soldier A to open the door and have Soldier B throw a grenade in. However, for some reason, Soldier B threw the grenade before Soldier A opened the door, which led to a team wipe during a mission. That said, since this only happened once, it might possibly be a one-off glitch.

Graphics/ Sound

Door Kickers 2: Task Force North employs a clean, top-down 2.5D visual style that prioritizes tactical clarity and functional realism. The environments are rendered with detailed textures and lighting, effectively conveying the Middle Eastern settings without overwhelming the player with unnecessary visual clutter.

In terms of sound, the game features a selection of tunes that seem to either alternate between or fuse Middle-Eastern and Western influences, which does make for some interesting music. Of course, sound effects are crucial in tactical games like this one and they can be very helpful in detecting danger in certain situations.

Conclusion

All in all, Door Kickers 2 isn’t just good – it is in a class of its own. It delivers a rich, rewarding, and challenging tactical experience complete with realistic combat scenarios, blending strategic planning with real-time action. If you love playing the original title, then getting this sequel is really a no-brainer, but for those of you who are new to the series like me, you might still want to give the game a try if you’re an avid tactical games fan and Door Kicker-curious.
