Summary

Metroidvania games today rarely disappoint. Titles like Hollow Knight, Grime, and even more recent ones like Skautfold: Usurper provides excellent experiences guaranteed to deliver dozens of hours of top-notch gameplay. Each of these games delivers something new to the equation, differentiating from their peers.

DOOMBLADE is another game that warrants a mention. Compared to its more grounded peers, DOOMBLADE’s movement and combat system takes things to the air; your character flits about in midair, slashing opponents with the eponymous greatsword effortlessly. However, much like the games in the genre, it’s pretty challenging. Moreover, it has all the elements, ranging from the character development and sprawling dungeons you would want from a 2D sidescrolling Metroidvania.

Developed by Muro Studios and published by Iceberg Interactive, should you give in to the doom and gloom DOOMBLADE delivers? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

In DOOMBLADE, you’ll play as Gloom Girl, a humanoid fiend-like creature who happens to be the last of the Gloomfolk. Imprisoned by the powerful Dread Lords, she discovers the DOOMBLADE, wrapped in chains for eons, while in relative solitude. Coaxed by the sentient weapon, she decides to free it from its chains and seek vengeance against the Dread Lords while regaining the blade’s lost power.

The narrative isn’t precisely DOOMBLADE’s strongest point, although you can talk with NPCs you encounter. You will also obtain tidbits of lore from what seem like announcement pillars that enforce the Dread Lords’ will.

Gameplay

The first thing you notice when you start playing DOOMBLADE is its sprawling dungeons and Metroidvania elements. The game is massive; there are countless caverns to explore and places to see. It’s also important to note that these areas aren’t empty - many are full of enemies and things to pick up and interact with. However, the game does suffer from a familiar Metroidvania mechanic many players don’t appreciate, which is backtracking. There are some high ledges and areas you won’t be able to access without the required powers, and you’ll have to return at some point.

DOOMBLADE sets itself apart from its peers through its combat system, which is fairly innovative and unique. Instead of grounded and deliberate attacks, you’ll first be required to aim using the right analog stick (assuming you’re using a controller), and the game automatically targets opponents within range. After you’ve locked on, simply press the right trigger button to perform attacks that take the form of quick slashes. To target enemies further away, press hold - this comes in handy whenever you face off against enemies that explode upon contact and for dodging enemy projectiles and attacks.

DOOMBLADE’s gameplay loop revolves around slashing and bashing opponents and flitting across elevated areas in sprawling dungeons. Although the game is relatively fast-paced, there’s a tendency for players (like yours truly) to button-mash. However, every move needs to be deliberate and thought out. After all, opponents just don’t die after a hit - some return after a certain amount of time. Moreover, there are traps and obstacles like putrid water you’ll need to avoid. Failing to do so will warrant damage, and it’s important to note you only have five lives will bring you back to the nearest checkpoint.

Progression in DOOMBLADE is done whenever you visit demonic pillars, which unlock new abilities, further giving you an edge in combat. Apart from flitting in the air, the game also gives you new ways to traverse the massive caverns and take on hordes of enemies. In addition, there are also off-battle upgrades like the ability to open a map, which is likely the first you’ll ever encounter.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, the visuals are nothing short of excellent. The art is fantastic, and the animations are smooth - the game runs reasonably well on a mid-tier laptop. The background and cavern designs are also sublime, and these range from dark caves to lush yet dangerous forests. Meanwhile, the same can be said about the music and overall audio effects.

Conclusion

If you’re in the market for a fantastic new Metroidvania experience, then DOOMBLADE deserves a spot in your video game library. It’s an excellent indie game with new and innovative features, managing to set itself apart from its peers thanks to its sublime and never-before-seen combat mechanics.

Muro Studios and Iceberg Interactive have made something quite special, and it’s safe to say DOOMBLADE will be considered as a title that introduced new things to the Metroidvania scene.
