Summary

Dogfight is a fun co-op (or single player, you do you!) 2D side-scrolling shoot ‘em up that’s set in a whimsical, sausage-obsessed world that found itself at war with the Vega Nation – a nation that vowed to eliminate sausages once and for all... the horror!

As a sausage bomber pilot, it’s up to you to save the world! Fly the skies to take out various enemies and avoid getting hit by the array of colorful projectiles shot at you. Will you be able to stop the war before it’s too late?

Plotline

For a world that just loves sausages, you can imagine the terror they felt when they realize that they are being attacked by the Vega Nation, the very people who wanted to get rid of sausages and force everyone to go vegan!

Of course, the world isn’t just going to take this sitting down! You are their best sausage bomber pilot in the Sausage Bomber Corps and it’s your duty to save the world from the Vega Nation. Will you be able to do it?

Gameplay

Before you start, you’ll need to first customize your game. You can choose from 5 levels of difficulty (from Sweet [easiest] to Atomic [hardest]), decide on the total number of lives you want per level (you can get up to 5 from the default 3), and how fast you’d like the game speed to be. Note that the game speed is mainly designed for speedrunners who’d want to complete the game faster. However, the game speed will automatically be adjusted as you play as well, increasing the more you progress and decreasing if you get hit instead.

You’ll also get to choose a character to play as. There are four different characters in this game, each with their own respective backgrounds, abilities, and uniquely designed aircrafts. Their abilities aren’t listed in the character selection screen, however, and you can only know what they are once you are in a proper fight.

Dogfight is a very simple game to get into. The controls are very easy to grasp, only requiring you to remember three buttons to shoot, drop sausage bombs, and to invert your plane whenever necessary. The game only supports controllers though so you can’t play the game on the keyboard and mouse.

Like most side-scrolling arcade shooters, Dogfight doesn’t stray too far away from the familiar formula, providing players with helpful pick-ups dropped by destroyed enemies or bonuses, including projectile upgrades which will make your projectiles a lot more powerful and numerous, medals that will add to your total score, drones that will fly around your plane, protecting it from certain harm for a limited number of times, and the occasional and very helpful Health Restore which will completely restore your health.

The variety of enemies in this game is also rather impressive. Some enemies have shields in front, so you will have to take them out from the back, while others will hurl themselves at your plane like kamikaze planes in WW2. There are even bombs that, when activated, will converge on your position, and try to blow you up… that is unless you can destroy them all first. As you progress further, the game also puts you on your toes by sending enemies your way from all angles so you’ll want to keep an eye out for warnings at the side of the screen.

Saving the best for last, what really makes Dogfight and most shoot ‘em ups so entertaining is the many challenging boss fights they have. Granted that not all boss fights in this game are challenging, there are some that can really catch you off-guard, especially if you encountered the boss for the first time and is just learning its attack patterns.

In one fight, namely against the Mega Snake, the boss tends to dive into and exit from the sand quite suddenly and without any on-screen warning, leaving you little to no time to dodge out of way…. sometimes to the point of handing the boss a free kill or two. This is just one example though. There are other types of bosses that will, for instance, have its lasers change direction (specifically, towards you) rather abruptly and no warning is given at all. These kinds of “cheap shots” do feel a bit unwarranted but considering how easy the other parts of the level is, you probably could afford a death or two.

Every level in the game usually takes minutes to complete, that is unless you failed a level and had to restart. So, if you’re really good, it’s possible to complete the game within an hour or so.

Community

Dogfight features local co-op and Steam’s remote play together, cand can support up to 4 players, including yourself. Although the game is completely playable alone, it’s naturally a lot more fun with friends. The more the merrier!

Graphics/ Sound

Featuring hand-drawn sprites and painted backgrounds, the cartoonish visuals in this game matches the humorous theme. Not the mention, the vibrant colors, especially the projectiles, also help the player keep track of all the bullets and lasers flying about on-screen.

In terms of sound, the game features a selection of rock-themed music that can really get that adrenaline going. The sound effects are very well done here too, helping to make every hit you make feels (and looks) impactful.

Conclusion

All in all, Dogfight is a solid 2D side-scrolling classic arcade shooter that’s fun for players of all skill ranges. Although the game features local co-op, it is completely playable in single player mode. Take to the skies and defeat the Vega Nation and their army in your sausage bomber now!
