Summary

Crowns and Pawns: Kingdom of Deceit is a charming point-and-click adventure game that will definitely delight fans of the genre. Playing as Milda, you’ll travel to Lithuania to claim your inheritance left by your deceased grandfather only to find yourself embarking on an adventure of a lifetime tracking down the legendary missing crown of Vytautas the great.

Plotline

One fateful day, Milda received a letter from a law firm informing her of her grandfather’s death and that he has willed his house in Lithuania to her. Thinking that she might be able to sell off the house so she could finally have enough money live her life, she sets off to her parents’ home country to sign the necessary legal documents.

However, after visiting her grandpa’s home, she was thrown head-first into a one-in-a-lifetime adventure tracking down a missing crown from a Lithuanian legend; the same kind of adventure that her dad was on before disappearing from her life…

Gameplay

This game has a similar gameplay as many classic (and great) point-and-click adventures, like Monkey Island and Broken Age, before it. This means reading through dialogues and observations made regarding various things in the environment or in your inventory and connecting the dots so you could engineer some sort of solution to the situation at hand.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as connecting a piece of string to a magnet, while at other times, you’ll not only have to have the necessary items in your inventory, you’ll also need to know how to combine the items and where to apply them. This game seems to also be a fan of quick-time-events, albeit not as quick as you might typically expect, forcing you to make use of brief moments of distraction to move a mirror or to spike someone’s trumpet with super sour lemon juice.

However, I think this game is a lot more challenging mainly because although the game gives enough hints, you still need to figure some of the puzzle solutions out yourself, especially the ones that might be a bit obscure. Personally, I’ve spent way too long on some parts of the game, doing various trials and errors, trying to figure out what I need to do in order to progress the story. It can get fairly frustrating after a while, but once you nailed the solution, the rush of dopamine you get from finally being able to advance the story is simply amazing!

So, here’s a quick tip - as with most games within the genre, if you are to make meaningful and timely progress, you’ll want to make sure you “look” at everything – and I do mean EVERYTHING - you can see/get, even the stuff that automatically goes into your inventory. After all, you don’t want to miss out any potential clues. Sometimes, you just need to try things out a bit before stumbling onto the solution and that’s completely okay. The game isn’t designed for you to rush through, but to enjoy at your own pace anyway!

Since the game is set in modern times where “totes” is actually a word, you’ll also get to use various modern gadgets that are at your disposal, such as the smartphone. There, you can neatly organize your notes and try to link up potentially related information that you’ve gathered together, call various people to ask for favors, or even to text your talented BFF, Dana.

Interestingly, Crowns and Pawns has some dress-up elements incorporated into its gameplay as well. Whether looking like the perfect “mascot” for a sports-themed art exhibition or masquerading as a hockey fan cheering for her local team, you have to nail that correct look by figuring out what sort of outfit you should match and wear.

I’d like to also point out that at the beginning of the game, you’ll get to choose what Milda is like by her very first conversation with Dana. You’ll get to choose her profession too and that will actually affect how you solve some of the puzzles later on. This also means that the game offers replayability as you might be interested to find out how the puzzles and the dialogues change for you had you chose to become a programmer as opposed to a photographer or an assistant psychologist.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics here are fantastic! I absolutely love the hand-painted look and the incredible details that went into creating the art. The colors used here are also bright and cheerful, giving the game a livelier feel and atmosphere. The animations and voice acting are absolutely spot-on as well.

Conclusion

Blasting you back into the past, Crowns and Pawns: Kingdom of Deceit stayed true to the formula that had made many a point-and-click adventure game great back in the day. It’s obvious, even at first glance, that plenty of love has gone into the creation of this game. The game offers some hand-holding, provided that you are looking the right way and the right things, giving players the chance to really figure stuff out on their own. Couple that with an intriguing and replayable story, and characters that you’ll simply love hanging out with, Crowns and Pawns is definitely right up the alley for any fan of the genre!
