Summary

Plotline

The game begins by describing you, the player, as a liege who has lost your castle to an evil Succubus and that your terrified and leaderless minions had been scattered across the map in your absence. It’s your duty to reclaim your castle and thus, your throne by assembling your team and taking it back from the fiend Succubus.

After this little bit of story, the game provides little snippets of story among the many quests available. The story isn’t exactly obvious if you tend to skip through all the texts though.

Gameplay

Similar to most creature-collecting games like Pokemon, in Creature Quest, the creatures that you have on your team is of utmost importance. Each creature in this game is associated with an element, be it fire, nature, ice, sun, light or darkness. Due to the presence of such elements, it is obvious that the game has some sort of an element counter system where, for example, fire creatures have an advantage when attacking nature creatures but will have to suffer from a disadvantage if they take on an ice creature instead. Light and darkness creatures have a counter system of their own, since these 2 elements don’t really mix well with the rest.

Having a good team of creatures with varied elements is a great start, but having enough of them in your disposal is also crucial mainly because you’ll get to set up your own dungeons where you’ll need to station the creatures you have to guard your dungeon from other players. There are 3 different ways for you to summon new creatures. You can summon new creatures using idols or tickets you’ve collected via quests or you could simply spend diamonds (premium currency) to get an instant level 10 and higher quality creature. You may also win creatures by battling them in quests.

Creature Quest provides you with a Creature Storage at your now reclaimed castle to not only store all the creatures you have (up to 30 of them at least, but you can buy more storage space using diamonds); but also upgrade them. Similar to the many ways you can get new creatures, there are many methods you can use to upgrade your creatures as well. You can power-up your creatures by adding the appropriately-colored experience gems and once they have reached their level cap, you can then evolve your creatures to improve its quality by 1 star. You can also imbue your creatures with bonus permanent stats via PLUS trinkets.

Aside from upgrades, you can also modify your team’s lineup of creatures at the Creature Storage interface. You can save up to 7 teams. For the advanced player, you can even customize your creatures through Tome Swapping, Combo Rerolls and Awakening which basically means that you use the necessary essences or duplicate creatures to boost the creature’s stats or special ability. You can recycle creatures that you don’t need as well.

Now that you’ve a team, it’s time to test it out. Quests in Creature Quest is much like a single-player campaign rather than being a “quest”. Each quest in this game is timed, so you’ll really need to make sure you complete your quest before the time is up. Quests consist of 5 levels of difficulty ranging from Squire to King. The higher difficulty level is only unlocked after you’ve completed the previous difficulty level.

Energy is also required to enter a quest, explore the map in the quest and to engage in battles. Energy restores over time, from completing missions, as well as during level-ups. Naturally, quests of higher difficulty will need more energy to play. As you level up, you’ll also unlock another PvE option called the Battle Tower in which you’ll need to battle various creatures of increasing difficulty floor by floor. With every victory, you’ll win some amazing rewards!

For the game’s ranked PvP aspect, players are given the opportunity to design their own dungeons instead... and by “design”, I meant staffing your dungeon with the creatures you have in your Creature Storage. Once you’re done, you can then take on other players’ dungeons via the Dungeon Challenge in an attempt to gain some prestige and booty. As mentioned before, it’s rather important to have enough creatures in your collection just so you can completely fill your dungeons with creatures. If your creatures happen to be well-upgraded, well, that’s even better!

Combat in Creature Quest, on the other hand, may seem to be a tad bit complicated, so it is wise to really pay attention whenever a tutorial pops up to explain how the combat system works. Generally, the creatures in your team will have 2 skills that you can use. The first skill being the basic Attack ability that you can change via Tome Swap. The second ability is a charged Special skill. Deal damage using the Attack skill and you can slowly charge up the creature’s Special skill.

The turn-based combat system is slightly different than what you may be used to in MMOCCGs. Players can perform 1 action per creature per turn, and they can also tap on a specific enemy to target it. Interestingly, the game also has a combo system whereby using certain elemental abilities will provide other creatures with substantial combo damage.

Not to forget, enemies you encounter do attack back, despite the lack of animation indicating so. There’s a number right beside each enemy creature that shows how many actions you can take before the creature will take an action of its own. Mobs even have skills that they can use. The skills are usually shown in text form right above their health bars.

For players looking to gain an advantage, you’ll be glad to know that there are many stuff you can buy at the in-app shop in Creature Quest. Diamonds, for instance, can get you experience and gold buffs, tickets, tokens which you can use to unlock mystery chests, more energy points as well as challenge points for playing a couple more rounds in the Dungeon Challenge. You can even expand your storage space so you can collect more creatures.

Alternatively, with real money, you can buy more diamonds, special bundles containing unique creatures and a ton of items, as well as a VIP status. Do take note that the VIP in this game is tiered, so basically, you’ll need to buy “VIP points” to “level up” your VIP tier. Naturally, the higher up you go, the more benefits and perks you’ll get. Oh, and don’t forget to check in daily to grab your free rewards as well!

Community

Guilds are a pretty integral aspect in Creature Quest as it’ll allow you to play together with your guildmates for weekly Tributes, so it’ll be wise to sign up for one or create a guild of your own once you reached level 5. You can also recruit your friends to the game to win an exclusive Jade Dragon, other bonus creatures via idol summons and, of course, diamonds.

You can even link your game account with your Facebook or Google+ accounts so you can save your progress in the cloud just in case of device failure and you can get yourself a sweet diamond summon for free.

Graphics/ Sound

Creature Quest has some incredible graphics with an art style that may bring to mind the beautiful “card art” you’d often see in MMOCCGs. The creature designs along with the backgrounds are pretty varied. It’s obvious that the developers spared no costs when it comes to covering their game in amazing art. That’s not all, the game even has some really nice sound effects and music. When combined, both graphics and sound manage to give the game a really magical feel which fits perfectly with the game’s fantasy theme.
