Summary
Cluckmech Oasis is a whimsical tower defense game with a fun roguelike twist. Protect the mobile defense base using various turrets, traps, your guns, or other mechanical tools for as long as you can as you travel across various biomes, bringing what’s left of civilization to relative safety. Unlock new characters to play as, game modes, and even difficulty as you progress through the game. Will you be able to make it to the end in one piece?
Gameplay
To start, you’ll need to first set up your run. In this game, there are up to five characters you can choose to play as, but you’ll only have access to the default character for your first run. The others can be unlocked once you’ve completed their respective requirements, ranging from killing an X number of enemies or placing a certain type of “tower” an X number of times. Of course, the last character – likely being the best of the lot – can only be unlocked once you manage to clear the game four times.
Each of these characters has their own unique skills, both of which are tied to your left and right mouse buttons. The character you choose will also affect the initial cluckmech, a.k.a. a “tower”, you get by default. There are up to five different Initial Talents you can choose from too. Similar to the character locks, you only get one default talent, and the rest requires unlocking, namely by completing the requirements.
The game also has difficulty levels but you don’t really get to choose at the start. Instead, everyone stars in the “baby” level and work their way up from there. There’s even a New Game+ style mode that will be unlocked once you manage to complete the game at least four times. Unlike most roguelike titles, there’s no overarching upgrade system here. However, as mentioned, you do get to unlock new features by fulfilling the requirements as you go on multiple runs.
Now, the roguelike aspect of the game is pretty much what you’d expect. There’s a map with several nodes, and you can decide where to travel on your mobile base. There are many different types of nodes here, including the usual shop (sells new cluckmechs) and workshop (upgrades cluckmechs; the first is free), repair nodes, and random events. You may also happen upon a Supply node where, interestingly enough, you can choose between “saving” the supply for later, which upgrades the level of your next supply cache, or claiming it now. I’m not sure how many levels you can save a supply for, but the rewards for a level 5 supply cache are sweet enough for me to claim it in a heartbeat!
Each map is usually concluded with a mini-boss or boss fight. Bosses in this game come with unique abilities that can really force you to adapt and change your defense strategy. For instance, if the boss has an Area of Effect (AOE) attack, then you’d best not to congregate your cluckmechs together, especially if you place them behind any Guardian cluckmechs you may have placed. It’s also probably a good idea to spread the Guardian cluckmechs.
Prior to any combat, you’ll get to customize your loadout as well. You can bring up to five different cluckmechs into battle, though you can have more than that amount in your inventory. The cluckmechs in this game are grouped into several different categories based on how they function. For example, Guardians are the “tanks” and are supposed to help absorb damage while your other Turrets rain hell upon the enemies. Some cluckmechs are Barracks that will spawn a unit – can be anything from ants to ravens, to even rats – at certain intervals up to a limit that will make a beeline for the enemy and attack them. On the battle preparation screen, you could also turn on the Challenge mode, which will grant you additional rewards in exchange for an enemy buff (essentially, the enemy will become stronger).
The game has five different biomes, where you’ll travel from the Research Facility to the Sweltering Desert and beyond. Each biome is made up of three maps, and only by getting through all three maps will you be able to proceed to the next biome. Ultimately, the goal is to get your mobile base to the final biome, where you’ll then battle the final boss and win the game.
In terms of combat, Cluckmech Oasis features a real-time tower defense gameplay where you will not only be able to build in between enemy waves but also build any cluckmech while a wave is ongoing. In fact, to help, the game even adds in bullet-time effect whenever build mode is triggered (by attempting to build any of the towers in your loadout), making it easier to strategize on the fly.
In addition to having cooldowns, which meant you can’t just spam-build cluckmechs, cluckmechs in this game cost Power to build, but curiously enough, you don’t get them from defeating enemies. Instead, you’re expected to get Power by collecting them from eggs and slimes. This isn’t something that you’ll learn from the get-go though since the game expects you to learn the game as you go.
The game isn’t all just tower defense, though! It is also part bullet hell as you can control your own character in the game and attack the enemies as they approach your mobile base. There are Warrior-style cluckmechs that you can recruit to follow you around and help you take on any enemies you may encounter.
At the end of the day, you’ll get a nice little summary of every run, and everything new you’ve discovered, be it turrets or enemies, will then be added to your Collection.
Graphics/ Sound
Cluckmech Oasis features gorgeous pixel art, complete with a vibrant palette of colors. Each sprite is meticulously designed, and there are plenty of cool details that you can enjoy. The game also features a selection of tunes that spans a few genres, from rock to synth-pop, to even jazz, though, personally, I’m not a fan of one particular jazz tune here – it just doesn’t sound as good, I think.
Conclusion
-With plenty of “fowl” jokes (pun intended), Cluckmech Oasis is a strategically challenging roguelike tower defense game with a fun and humorous twist. The game has plenty of content for you to unlock as you progress, be it a new character, new game mode, new talents, or even a higher difficulty level, despite not providing any meta upgrade system to indicate progression. If you enjoy both roguelike and tower defense games, Cluckmech Oasis might just be right up your alley. Give it a try!
