Summary

Console and PC FPS players have a huge reason to be excited this year since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot looks more than epic. However, Garena and Activision dropped a predator missile on us, in the form of Call of Duty: Mobile, out of nowhere.

Wait, wait, wait. Call of Duty? On mobile?

Yes, Call of Duty: Mobile is an authentic COD experience. It’s a spinoff mobile title, targeting casual FPS fans and people who want to dive into the COD universe and fanbase on their smartphones and tablets. Though it does not have the campaign nor the zombies game modes of its console parents, it has a variety of options available. The entertainment and fun value it provides is incredibly rich.

With that in mind, it’s safe to say that it’s just a cookie-cutter game with a popular IP made so publishers can line their pockets with money from microtransactions. There’s a huge deal of effort and love that came into making the game which you’ll experience first hand when you dive into it.

Gameplay

If you’re a Call of Duty veteran, the first thing you’ll notice is that most of the maps, weapons, and certain places in Call of Duty: Mobile’s game are things you’ve seen before. This isn’t a surprise considering the title drew various assets from older CoD games like the old Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and even Ghosts.

However, there is undoubtedly a concern whether the game actually “feels” like Call of Duty. As someone who has played the Modern Warfare series along with Black Ops III and IV, I can safely say it does not feel like Call of Duty. Rather, it IS Call of Duty. The core gameplay, although made easy for mobile players, is quite similar to the earlier iterations of the franchise. The shooting, regardless of your control scheme, feels fast and snappy, much like the mainline games. There are killstreaks, customizable guns, and other weapons. Customization is robust, considering that you can change barrels, scopes, and the overall look of your guns.

In Call of Duty: Mobile, you’ll have access to the many weapons and gear. These range from assault rifles like the M416, sniper rifles, shotguns, and even UAVs in the Black OPs series. In addition, character skins and models are patterned after the old games as well, giving you a nice nostalgia trip.

Call of Duty: Mobile has a number of game modes. These include Frontline (which is Team Deathmatch where you spawn at your base), regular Team Deathmatch, Domination (a conquest-style PvP), Search and Destroy (bomb mode), and of course, battle royale. Maps in the non-battle royale modes range up to five and are mainly old Call of Duty locations. One of the best features of the game is private matches where you can play with your friends. It’s an outstanding feature which some triple-A games on consoles and PC lack.

Meanwhile, COD: Mobile’s battle royale is highly-comparable to Black Ops IV’s Blackout. Thing is, you can only unlock it when your account level reaches seven. However, it does have numerous bots which fill the player count to 100. The map isn’t a carbon copy of the one in Blackout, they have their similarities. There are also specialist classes, abilities, and zombies that attack you on sight. Moreover, there are vehicles and helicopters, much like in Black Ops 4.

Like most free-to-play mobile games, Call of Duty: Mobile has microtransactions. You can purchase items like character skins and new weapons, as well as its premium battle pass. The items minimally impact the game, and winning relies on your skill.

Community

So far, Call of Duty: Mobile is undoubtedly one of the fastest-growing newly-released titles today. It currently has tens of millions of players, so you won’t run out of players to play with. In addition, if you have friends who play mobile games, they’re probably already part of its large and robust community.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Call of Duty: Mobile is still a far cry from its console and PC counterparts, but it holds up fairly well. It’s undoubtedly one of the more better-looking shooters on mobile right now, if not, the best to date. You can change the graphics settings, as well as turn off certain effects like shadows, increase framerate or prioritize resolution. Although there are framerate drops and crashes, these occurrences are fairly rare and you’ll mostly have a smooth gameplay experience.

Conclusion

Overall, Call of Duty: Mobile is a must-play not only for mobile players but also console and PC gamers who are looking for a mobile game to spend some time in. It provides a robust experience thanks to its many game modes. With guns, characters, and maps based on the mainline games, you’ll be treated to a legitimate COD game. The only difference is you can play it on the palm of your hands.
