Summary

Some bullet hell games are fun, while others provide a significant level of challenge enough to make you pull your hair out. The latter’s instances come into play when you’ve died when the boss’ HP meter is a few hits away from emptying. However, a select few bullet hell experiences belong to both categories, one of which is Bullet Casters, a new top-down shooter from Aurora Punks.

Now available on Steam, the game is currently on early access, yet it delivers a relatively entertaining bullet hell experience that exceeds many of its peers. Pair it with its fantasy setting and fun characters with varying abilities, and you have a rather intriguing game. In a way, it’s pretty accessible compared to its peers, yet, at the same time, it offers a fair bit of challenge even to practiced players.

However, will it be something you’d want to dive into? Given its early access state, you might have a few reservations. However, spoiler alert: toss these aside since Bullet Casters undoubtedly shines. How? Well, let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Bullet Casters is set in the world of Silveris, a land whose kingdoms are in constant conflict. One fateful day, a meteor fell to the earth and was divided into four fragments. In line with their tendency to one-up each other, the four kingdoms raced to obtain one of these fragments and, in turn, were able to harness their power.

The four mages featured in the game, Ella, Fil, Torden, and Hana, are the primary mages of their respective nations. Each can cast devastating spells, unleash projectiles, and summon monsters to take on rival mages and enemy kingdoms. However, the story doesn’t exactly play a central role, considering you can switch characters which, in turn, changes your perspective.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Bullet Casters is your typical bullet hell game. You’ll dive into several short levels full of top-down shooting action, taking out enemies while dodging countless projectiles thrown at you. If other games in the genre use planes or spaceships to differentiate the avatars, the game uses mage characters, each with their bullet patterns and abilities. In addition, the game has a tiny RPG mechanic where you equip certain items to aid you in battle. Furthermore, you can upgrade them using the crystals you collect by finishing levels in specific conditions that earn you stars.

Currently, there are four characters in Bullet Casters. Ella seems to have the qualities of a protagonist; she’s upbeat and peppy and a competent fighter. Her shot type is fast and highly damaging but requires precision since it goes straight. Thankfully, her unique ability lets her summon a magic circle that fires projectiles for her. Meanwhile, Fil is a powerful pyromaniac whose shots scatter, and his ability allow him to summon a miniature version of the sun that damages enemies near it. Hana is a cold, sword-wielding sorceress. Her special ability lets her mark a spot and teleport to it, and she also has a special attack that allows her to slash opponents, dealing devastating damage. Finally, there’s Torden, who can unleash devastating bolts of lightning, but to do so, the player has to time a button press perfectly. The character variety makes the game stand out from the rest of the genre. Every character has a different playstyle, giving you a fresh experience every time.

The levels are relatively short, and though they’re not as explosive as other games, they hold up well and are quite challenging. One thing that makes it so is the conditions required to earn three-star ratings. Generally, the prerequisites need you to finish in a certain amount of time and not get hit. Doing so will let you obtain more crystals you can spend in the shop. The initial items you can purchase include a shield and familiars that fire projectiles of your own, giving you a power boost. Enemies are pretty varied, and minibosses on some levels will present a fair challenge. Beating bosses can take a while; it took me countless tries to defeat the first. Occasionally, enemies will drop powerups which may boost your firepower. In addition, they could also drop you a life that can be useful since you're only limited to getting hit three times per level.

The movement is relatively smooth, but one of my gripes is that you cannot use the mouse, only a keyboard and a controller. Nevertheless, using the latter in Bullet Casters is excellent; the game supports the Dualshock 4 and Xbox controllers. In addition, the projectiles are precise, and I’ve encountered no mishits in my playthrough.

Community

Bullet Casters has no online capability, but you can play split-screen PvP or shared-screen co-op with a friend. You can also use Steam’s remote play feature.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of visuals and overall presentation, Bullet Casters excels. The art style, including in-game and the cutscenes, is eye candy. The character designs are full of personality, notably Hana and Ella’s. There are also no framerate drops or stability issues; the game runs smoothly on a laptop with a 3060 Nvidia graphics card, which is a must since the screen can get a little crowded, and you need to dodge countless bullets thrown at you.

Conclusion

Bullet Casters is a fantastic bullet hell experience that deserves a place in your gaming library. Thanks to the four quirky characters on its roster, it presents a fair bit of challenge while giving players a high degree of variety and replayability.

So, give it a shot today and start your journey in Silveris!
