Brawlhalla is an interesting free-to-play title available on the PlayStation 4. Let’s get the elephant out of the room: it looks like and can definitely be compared to more popular titles like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Once you start playing though, you will attest that it gives off a rather familiar yet unique and exciting action-packed experience that you can't going back to. It is a 2D platformer fighter where you choose a “legend” and fight against other players in an arena. It has several game modes, and each of them can cater to your gameplay needs and preferences.

There’s really no coherent and notable story in Brawlhalla, although the characters themselves have their own unique quirks and backgrounds. Basically, “Legends” from across time and space somehow have been gathered in a battle arena in Valhalla (thus the game’s namesake) to fight an eternal battle just for the heck of it. The game definitely won’t win a narrative award, but the story definitely works.

Considering that the characters are gathered from across time and in various legends, their backstories, designs, and abilities are varied. You can play as Roland, a knight in the medieval period who wields a sword and lance, or Mirage, a scythe-wielder who looks like he came from ancient Egypt. There’s also a hammer-wielding minotaur and a vampire who uses dual pistols. However, not all characters are available from the start. The ones available to you change every day, although you have the option to unlock more through microtransactions.

Brawlhalla’s gameplay is akin to Super Smash Bros, and it does well in somehow emulating its chaotic yet fun experience. The fights are set in 2D arenas and the goal is to deal damage to your opponents until you can strike them with a powerful attack to send them flying from the arena, causing a “knockout”. Every time you score one, you’re given points and the player who has the highest will end up the victor. In case of a draw, the players whose scores are tied will face off in a sudden death round.

Dealing damage can be done through light and heavy attacks, may it be with your characters’ fists or weapon. The battles start with each Legend brought into the field unarmed, and the first thing you do is find a glowing sword which will transform into a weapon. Note that each Legend can wield two different weapons. For example, Ember the Archer can use a bow and a pair of daggers. As you beat down your enemies, their HP gauge goes from white to red. When it turns into the latter, you can strike them with a heavy hit to knock them out.

Fighting games like SoulCalibur, Marvel vs Capcom, and Tekken make use of complicated mechanics and rigorous button-combinations that take time to learn and eventually master. Brawlhalla’s developers kept their creation simple: the learning curve isn’t steep and the controls are incredibly intuitive. This caters to anyone who does not want to invest time learning the complicated nuances present in other similar titles. However, note that each Legend has its own set of attributes (speed, strength, dexterity, defense), so learning how to use them plays a part in getting far.

Brawlhalla has several game modes. There are ranked 1v1, 2v2, four-player free-for-all, and eight-player FFA, and 4v4 team battles. You can also try out the casual modes in order to practice using other characters without staining your official record. In addition, there’s the Bombsketball and Brawlball modes (and more to come in the future) which are great party games you can play locally with friends or online.

Brawlhalla has a robust online community. It’s not hard to find ranked or casual games, and considering that it has only been released recently on the PlayStation 4, there are thousands of players still in the learning phase. It has a subreddit and even a Discord chat community wherein they hold tournaments anyone can join. If you love the game and are looking for someone to play it with, there are places on Internet that would welcome you with enthusiastically.

Brawlhalla’s art direction isn’t fancy, yet it does the job perfectly. The Legends don’t look alike: each and every one of them has different aesthetics. Even if the character models are merely small sprites, they’re pretty memorable and you can see the love and effort put into creating them. There are several arenas in the game, and despite being 2D, they provide a fresh experience. Some even have moving platforms wherein you have to adjust your play style depending on their movement.

Overall, Brawlhalla is a shiny, yet inconspicuous gem inside a loaded jewelry store that you definitely need to pick up. It’s how free-to-play titles with microtransactions should be: loads of fun, easy to pick up and play, and provides more value than the money you may end up spending for it. Although its concept entirely original, it makes up for it with stellar gameplay and long hours of sheer entertainment within the bounds of simplicity. We highly recommend you look it up on the PlayStation Store and download it.
