Summary

The latest chapter to the popular tower defense game, Bloons Tower Defense 5 promises to have more depth and replayability from its predecessors. With all-new towers and a special feature called Special Agents where they can be summoned to aid your towers. Now with more missions and different game modes, this game will be providing more fun to any tower defense fans.

Plotline

The fifth title from the Bloons Tower Defense series, you once again guide a group of monkeys as they prevent the swarm of balloons or also known as ‘bloons’ from reaching the end of the track in the map. Though there are no proper backstory about the monkeys that are defending their village, the setting of the game is very straightforward that you will going to expect something big once you start the game.

Gameplay

Bloons Tower Defense is still the same as with any tower defense game available in the market. Your goal is to protect your area from incoming enemies, in this case you will fighting a swarm of balloons. You must place a series of towers around the pathway to fend off against the incoming wave, at the start of the game you will be given a certain amount of money to spend on building towers and you can earn more by defeating the enemies and clearing the round. The farther you go, the hard the enemies will become.

But what makes Bloons different from any typical tower defense game is the depth of the gameplay. Each of the monkeys have its own special abilities, from freezing balloons to sniping from afar or even bombarding with a jetplane. Then unique feature from the different towers is that you can upgrade their abilities in two different ways; you can upgrade the towers with different attack methods, such as your slingshot monkey can shoot at a faster rate or can shoot more than one bullet per shot or you ice tower monkey can cause an explosive damage to targets when frozen or make their movement slower with an upgrade.

Every time you use a specific tower, it will gain experience to level up and unlock more upgrading options, so the more you use a tower, the more it can be upgraded. Upgrading has its limits thought, you cannot max all the upgrades as you are only allowed to upgrade at least three times, this gives players some challenge in picking the best upgrade for their towers that would not make it feel overpowered and imbalanced.

As for the enemy balloons or bloons, there are different types of bloons that would require different strategies and monkeys to use. There are bloons that are invisible to your ordinary monkeys so you are required to recruit ninja monkeys to detect them, some bloons can be tougher to kill, like it takes 10 or 100 hits before it can be destroyed, so proper placement of monkeys is encouraged.

New to the game is the inclusion of Special Agents that can be purchased in the main menu, these agents can provide powerful support to your monkeys for a limited time. You can assign more agents in your playthrough where they can be used depending on the situation, it adds an interesting twist to the game as it acts like a summoning system in certain games.

There are different maps available in game with different themes and pathways to provide more difficulty in your plays, from green fields to outer space, Bloons Tower Defense 5 has some crazy sense of humor on their themed maps. There are different difficulty levels that suits your play style, and clearing a stage will give players monkey dollars that can be used to purchase add-ons, but the amount will vary on the difficulty level.

Community

So far there is a big Bloons Tower Defense community that is active. Though there are no multiplayer features found in the game, there are leaderboards and rankings that players can show off with each other to see which has the highest score. There are also daily rewards and challenges where players can complete to receive rewards.

Graphics/Sound

Bloons Tower Defense feels like a game developed in Flash, the animation feels a bit limited, however the character designs are quirky and fun to look at as it provides more personality to each monkey featured in the game, but on the fifth game, it has some improvements on the visuals, but it still maintain that Flash game feel, but it is not that bad for this casual game.

The soundtrack has a funky tone to it which can keep the mood high for some players, but like some of the casual games available, it is only limited to one track, the sound effects have some issues as well, like the bloons explode effect only has one sound effect, making the feel of exploding the bloons feel uninspired.

Conclusion

So far there are some new features on the fifth Bloons Tower Defense game. And with the improved visuals, it makes it more appealing to newcomers to the series. The gameplay has more depth thanks to the upgrade feature that lets you pick which upgrade path you should take and the special agents feature to provide an advantage to your gameplay.
