Summary

Big Loot is a survival-themed, roguelike caravan game where you play as an up-and-coming trader, looking to make your fortune trading between towns. Every run involves journeying between towns, gathering resources and valuables to craft and sell, as well as food to sustain yourself. However, the roads are perilous and filled with dangerous beasts. You’ll need to make strategic, “risk vs. reward” decisions, be it when gathering loot or upgrading your wagon. How far will you go?

Gameplay

BIG LOOT plays like an extended escort quest where you follow your horse-drawn caravan across the wilderness. What makes this different is that while you’re escorting your caravan (surprisingly enough, you don’t need to defend it against hostile creatures), you’ll need to do other stuff as well, such as gathering resources, crafting, and hauling as much loot as you can carry.

Early on, chopping trees and mining stone and ore are essential since these materials let you build your first wagon, expanding your storage and enabling longer, more profitable journeys. Plus, you’ll also gain access to much better tools that would make the subsequent loot-gathering grind more bearable. In Big Loot, progression is simple and direct: unlock new tech by discovering or crafting new materials, since there is no research tree to manage.

The place you’ll be travelling through is also filled with points of interest, each packed with loot, though their layouts tend to feel repetitive after awhile. With no map, you’re forced to keep your caravan in relative sight at all times during exploration. It’s easy enough to get lost if you’re not aware of your surroundings, such as when you’re panicking as you’re being chased by multiple hostiles.

Survival mechanics are present here as well: you must manage both hunger and thirst. Though for now you can’t drink from wells, making food, especially items that satisfy both needs, is your main lifeline.

Combat is straightforward tank-and-spank, where better weapons and armor make all the difference. Enemies can hit surprisingly hard though, and getting swarmed can quickly end a run, so taking foes one at a time is key. Hostile animals like wolves and boars will chase you down, while gentler creatures like chickens flee when attacked.

Loot fuels nearly every system in this game, but trading is unusually and surprisingly constrained. Traders only buy specific requested items, often through bartering rather than coin. This means that unless you happen to have exactly what a merchant wants, you can’t really amass a fortune even if you’ve optimized your cargo to store mostly high-value loot.

That said, since death can be devastating in this game, you’d be glad to know that you can store excess valuables and tools in the bank just so you’d have something more to start with after respawning in town. However, the weight and slot limits must be upgraded over time, or there won’t be enough space.

Overall, the gameplay loop revolves around gathering, surviving, and managing your caravan’s growing stash - simple, grindy, but satisfying for players who enjoy steady progression and mountains of loot to uncover.

Graphics/ Sound

Big Loot features a stylized, cartoonish 3D look that is cleanly modeled with bold silhouettes. Color palettes seem to favor natural tones with occasional pops of accent colors so that loot, gear, or resources tend to stand out visually from the environment, so you can spot them easily.

In terms of sound, the game features what seems to be a single looped soundtrack, but the tune is supplemented with plenty of sound effects, be it the squeal of a wild boar or the creaking sound from your caravan’s wheel as it moves.

Conclusion

BIG LOOT delivers a promising mix of trading, survival, and roguelike mechanics that as fun as it is hardcore. It’s still early in development, so there are rough edges (visual variety, polish, perhaps performance), but what’s present shows strong foundation. For players who enjoy caravan survival, risk-reward gameplay, and loot collection, BIG LOOT might just be a title to watch!
