Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses is a fun horse game where you can test your horse-riding skills as you dash through various tracks and smashing race records. Based on the popular German tween movie, Bibi & Tina, which was released back in 2014, this game provides several exciting race modes including cross-country jumping and checkpoint-based races. There is a few mini-games as well that mainly deal with taking care of your horse and feeding it, and a present-hunting game mode where you can find and collect special tokens to unlock new horses to ride.
Although the movie the game is based on has a story (obviously), the story is not integrated into the gameplay in Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses. Personally, I find this a tad bit disappointing because the game could have been so much more if it has a story mode. However, if you’re simply looking for a movie with a game tie-in, then Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses is a really nice horse game to play.
Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses offers several modes of play, namely Missions, Training and Riding Out. The Missions game mode lets you ride around a map of Martinshof while completing races along the way.
There are several types of races available, including Riding Competitions where you’ll get to race from 1 checkpoint to another against a rider (one of the characters from the movie); and Cross-Country Riding that will put your horse jumping skills to the test. There is Orientation Riding in which you’ll have to navigate the land and race towards the single and final checkpoint within the time limit; and also Checkpoint Races where you’ll need to run through checkpoints to gain precious extra seconds although going through checkpoints are entirely optional.
It’s best to start with Missions mainly because by playing the missions in this game mode, you’ll be unlocking the corresponding races in the Training mode. Winning races in Missions mode will also reward you with collectible movie photos that you can then later browse through via tour Photo Album.
The Riding Out mode is fairly different game mode though. In some way, it gives you the freedom to ride wherever you like, but the game does provide a little “Easter Egg hunt”-like game where you’ll ride around searching for presents which contain special tokens. These tokens, once you have them all, can be turned in to unlock new horses to ride.
Aside from Training, Missions and Riding Out modes offers players some mini-games to play as well. These mini-games include feeding your horse, grooming it and cleaning its hooves. Most of these mini-games are fairly simple to play despite not providing sufficient instructions to let players know what keys they need to press, and if you do a great job, your horse will obtain a nice endurance boost.
Similar to many other horse games, riding a horse in Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses is really easy. You just need to use either the WASD or the arrow keys to navigate your surroundings. Tapping the spacebar will speed up your horse but it will drain your horse’s endurance. A horse’s endurance will automatically start refilling itself after you stop tapping the spacebar for a few seconds. If your horse’s endurance is completely drained, however, the horse will suffer a speed penalty for a couple of seconds, at least until its endurance level is regenerated.
Going fast on your horse is necessary most of the time mainly because the races in this game are all time-based. Not to mention, for Cross-Country Riding, you actually need to be fast enough or your horse will refuse to jump the obstacle in front of it. Due to this, it’s important to know how to balance your use of your horse’s endurance. That said, I find the races in this game rather easy to play as long as you don’t mess up big time. Small mistakes can still be easily rectified though, especially if you’ve got a huge lead on your AI opponent.
Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses is a single-player game and as such, there isn’t any social features within the game itself. However, if you’d like to chat about the game or the movie with your fellow players, you can likely do so in the game’s allocated forum on Steam.
The bold outlines, the cartoonish art style and the bright colors really bring out the beautifully designed game environment. Couple that with a nice mellow soundtrack that plays in the background, and you’ll get a rather immersive game. However, I have a bone to pick with the sound effects. I find that they are particularly loud and sound “sharp” to the ears. At times, the sounds will simply disappear altogether, only to return once my rider is a good distance away. There are some camera glitches as well. They usually occur near the edges of narrow paths, especially the ones with sloped sides.
Bibi & Tina may not be the most popular horse movie ever produced but the movie has touched the hearts and minds of young horse lovers worldwide. Similarly, Bibi & Tina – Adventures with Horses lives up the movie it is based on, not by providing a story-driven game mode for you to play, but by allowing you to virtually explore the many cool places a fan of Bibi & Tina may recognize in an instant. Of course, there’s also the fact that you can enjoy racing horses alongside Bibi, Tina and several other iconic characters from the movie, and taking care of them!
The game is not yet released on Steam, but it will be available soon – on December 1, 2018.
