Summary

Unfortunately, there are fewer opportunities to play retro games, and those we in the 90s used to play in arcades back in the day. Unless if you have old consoles and cartridges, there’s really no way to play games like Fatal Fury, one of the oldest fighting games, and Asteroids, an arcade classic. Though there are newer, more immersive games out there today, it is such a waste not to have a chance to go back to the good ol’ days.

Thankfully, Antstream Arcade exists. In a nutshell, it’s a free service that provides over a thousand retro and arcade games, playable on PC, certain consoles, and smartphones. Whether you’re someone whose first experience with games was on SNES or recently got into gaming with a smartphone, it’s a great way to experience classic titles again. However, you’ll get to do so on an unlimited basis - you no longer have to try entering tokens or use a card.

So, should you give Antstream Arcade a shot and relive the old days of gaming? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Gameplay

Antstream Arcade’s best selling point is the countless arcade and retro games it has on its arsenal. There are over a thousand, and if you’re someone who only dreamed of playing certain games as a child but couldn’t buy a cartridge behind a video game stall, you’ll likely find them here. Among its popular game selections include arcade hits Asteroids and Pac-Man, along with NES and SNES games Galaga and Fatal Fury. Games from SEGA’s old console, the Mega Drive (or Genesis for Americans), are part of the selection, including early RPGs like Exile and Canon. Even games from less popular consoles like ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64 are part of its lineup. It’s insane how varied the selection is, and if you’re someone who loves the classics, you’ll be in for a treat.

Antstream Arcade’s massive library caters to almost all types of gamers. There are early role-playing games along with strategy titles like the early version of Worms and fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Samurai Shodown. There’s even Metal Slug, which is probably its youngest game. You’ll quickly find the titles you’d want to play, thanks to its familiar Netflix-esque user interface and nifty search feature.

On PC, the games on Antstream Arcade are playable on a controller, not just via a mouse and keyboard. Yes, you can play games like Galaga and Super Star Wars on PlayStation 4’s Dualshock 4, which is rather amusing. Unfortunately, the old control schemes stay, and there’s no way to map or customize them. In the case of Metal Slug, you’d have to shoot via the O button, jump with the X, and throw grenades with the square. This control scheme took a while to get used to, especially since we’re used to having run ‘n’ games today use the back triggers as shoot buttons.

Community

Antstream Arcade’s community is one of its highlights. The service focuses on making things social, adding to its overall appeal. To be frank, this is crucial, considering that many of its games are arcade titles, which may have been played with friends on Saturday afternoons at the local hang-out spot.

Registering an account doesn’t take much: you can perform the usual email address and password routine or use your Facebook account, which takes just a click or two. After which, you can then customize your profile, choose avatars, and change your in-game name.

Although there are no two-player or PvP modes in Antstream Arcade, it uses leaderboards and tournaments. Joining tournaments requires you to drop in an entrance fee in the form of gems. Ranking well in these competitions will give you a large piece of the prize pot, usually up by the thousands. Meanwhile, playing a game puts you on the leaderboards and, in turn, calculates your overall ranking. Placing high means placing your name high up the list for everyone to see and admire.

Graphics/Sound

There’s not much to say in terms of presentation, except that Antstream Arcade any visual aspects of the games that are available. Yes, the games look how they did when you plugged in a NES cartridge or when you dropped a coin in an arcade. Unfortunately, some games don’t age well and may look like unrecognizable pixel blocks. In this case, it would be a smart idea to resize the game and see if it looks a lot better.

Antstream Arcade runs relatively well, but not without a few hiccups. Though I’m using a mid-level PC, there are occasional stutters and FPS drops which suggests there are optimization problems. However, these issues are relatively few and far in between and won’t hamper your overall experience.

Conclusion

Overall, Antstream Arcade is a fantastic gaming service and it’s a must regardless if you’re someone who loves the classics,, a casual fan, or someone looking for a dose of nostalgia. With over a thousand games on hand, you’ll never run out of titles to dive into.
