Summary
Fight your way into the world of Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards, where you get to pick different characters from Fox's adult animated series Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, King of the Hill, American Dad and Futurama. In this MMOCCG title, you can select from five basic characters to start fighting amusing but dangerous enemies. Combine cards for bigger damage, research to discover what two kinds of cards can do and have a blast watching your enemies fall.
Gameplay
The game will start with a short tutorial from Family Guy's Peter Griffin. He'll walk you through picking your character and going through your first battle. Here you'll learn that the two numbers on the bottom left of the card mean strength and health, reading from top to bottom. Strength is indicated by the mallet icon and health with the heart icon. Your side of the battle ground will be on the bottom and your opponent will be on top.
To win a match, you must deal the right cards to damage your enemy's cards (and even the enemy himself) in the shortest time possible. There are four types of cards: Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Just like any game hero, cards possess their own "skills" that activate when used. These skills can be high damage, high defense, health steal and lots more.
When you're just starting, you get basic type cards, most of which are Common and one or two Rare cards. As you go past the beginner level, the cards will start to have Traits and Animation Universe. This means that their skills might require certain conditions to work. For instance, some cards from Futurama may not work with full power when dealt with a card from American Dad.
You are usually given a total of five cards to choose from in the beginning of a match. These are filled in as you take cards from the pile. You can combine certain cards to make a single, more powerful card. Your character's health is indicated by the huge heart icon beside your character's avatar. Make sure to keep this higher than your enemy's. Attacks are automatically activated, and you have to wait your turn before dealing the next card. You win the game when your enemy's health is zero.
Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards has four game modes, namely Adventure, Arena (PvP), Rumble (Guild fights) and Challenges (Events). The Adventure mode is where the campaigns are, and this is where you would fight to level up and increase your skills. Quests usually point you to campaigns found in Adventure mode. The Arena mode is a Player vs Player mode where you can fight with other players online. The rewards are usually bigger, but you need to be well-prepared to win a round. Rumble mode is where you can join guild fights. Before you can do this, you need to join a guild first. Once you're in a guild, you can play on Rumble mode.
The first few campaigns in Adventure mode are pretty easy to win, but it will eventually get harder and this is when you need to edit your Deck and upgrade your cards. You need Powers to upgrade cards, and you can collect these when you complete Quests or win a set of rounds in a campaign in Adventure mode. You can also Research cards to combine two cards together and see what they turn out to be. Research also requires Powers and a few minutes (or hours) to finish. You can speed it up using Gems.
Community
Animation Throwdown is obviously played by fans of Fox's adult cartoons. However, you don't have to be a fan of any of these shows to appreciate the game. There are lots of guides online to learn different game strategies. There's the official game's forum and Facebook page with hundreds of players sharing their experience and knowledge of the game. You can even participate in adding new game content, as the game developers recently asked which character should be added to the game. There's also a lot of noise generated by guild members looking forward to the next rumble.
Graphics/Sound
The graphics of the game is pretty faithful to its TV counterparts, and so is the humor that goes with it. The locations in the background are also quite nice to look at, and it's an added bonus to playing a visually solid game. The sound effects, however, fall short of expectation. There are no voice overs for any of the characters, which is a pity since it could've made the game more enjoyable. Nevertheless, the game is already entertaining as it is.
Conclusion
One indication that this is a great MMOCCG is that you don't have to be a fan or follower of these shows to enjoy the game. Animation Throwdown is a solid game that lets you fight, strategize and win as much as you can. Fair warning, though: this game can make you lose track of time as it's mildly addictive. There's a lot of things to do within the game that it would take a long time before you get bored. However, features like Quests help to point you towards the right direction. With great gameplay, a solid group of characters and awesome graphics, you won't be sorry spending too much time dealing cards.
