An online horse simulation game where you get to ride beautiful virtual horses and enjoy an epic adventure, Alicia Online (also known as Project Alice is some countries) was developed by NTReev from South Korea where its target audience are both the casual players that are into socializing and the competitive ones that are into engaging matches. It features elements on interacting with other players as well as customizing your avatar and your horse partner. Although it may have a racing mode as it main highlight, the game is more about the adventure, the player interaction (it is an MMO after all) and the horse caring factor.
Focusing on an anime-like world where anthropomorphic animals coexist with humans, similar scenarios that you would see in anime series. You start your journey in a barn where you first get your own horse that will become your partner in your journey. So far not much plot and lore has been created to flesh out the game, though it would have been nice to have some backstories on Alicia Online’s game world to help make it more intriguing to explore.
Alicia Online focuses on two aspects; the horse racing and the horse interaction. Though its main highlight is really the horse racing, it has some similarities to the typical online racing games or even from the consoles. Controlling the horse has the same feel that with a racing car; you steering your horse’s direction with the A and D keys, but take note that the steering control is stiffer, as the horse will require a larger space when turning around as it uses its momentum to steer. You can also make the horse jump, and even a double jump when you tap the Z key twice or glide to get to inaccessible areas by holding the Z key.
The racing feature has four different game modes; the Speed and Speed Team where it is the standard racing mode where you must reach the finish line first, the Speed Team is very similar to the standard Speed mode but you will be having your own team that is comprised of other players, if any of your teammates gets first place, your entire team wins. Battle mode added some combat elements to keep the racing more intense, if you played Mario Kart games before, that is what Battle mode feels like. Similar with Speed mode but each participant can attack anyone to slow them down, you can pick up items along the track to use it against other players, Battle Team mode is a team-based Magic mode race. If you want to practice your horse racing skills, you can go for the Solitaire mode where you race against AI players.
The other feature of Alicia Online was the horse interaction. You can take care of your virtual horse by equipping it with costumes and other outfits to make it stand out. It blends the customization with role playing game elements such as leveling and stat improvement to make your horse better in racing games. You can take care of your horse by feeding them with food to some state improvements or clean them up to improve its performance. There is also a breeding feature that you can unlock powerful horses that you can use for future races.
The game’s map is very limited, you only roam around the barn and enter the races in the same theme, hopefully in the future patch updates, more themed levels can be featured to provide more variety
Once you logged into the game, one thing you can notice is that there are active players online that you can interact with. You can just chat with them or challenge them to some racing matches with up to 8 players per race. You can form parties and chat with other horse owners for a more private interaction.
To keep the anime feel going, Alicia Online features colorful characters and a more vibrant world. Characters featured with big eyes and cute accessories along with bubbly personalities makes it feel like the game is from an anime series. The problem on the visuals is that it lacks any customization of the graphics as majority are all presets from low, medium and high. Hardcore players may want to optimize the visuals to the maximum and this will make them shorthanded. As for the sound effects, there are some voiced audio in certain NPCs though it is only limited and are voiced in Korean, the soundtrack is decent and fits well to the game’s themed world, though it would be nice if it has more options.
Alicia Online may be just one of the refreshing takes in an online horse simulation game. Its distinctive anime look definitely works well with its fun gameplay. However, it could become better if it has more map varieties for you to explore and more race tracks for players to race at. Since this is still in its beta phase, we could expect more in the future, but even as it is right now, Alicia Online is one interesting horse simulation game that horse lovers will enjoy.
