In After Wave: Downfall, the planet is invaded by creatures called the Deathrix. They came from somewhere far away in the galaxy. These beings launched a destructive meteorite to crash into earth. This has caused severe devastation and is the reason behind rising water levels everywhere. If you think that is terrible news, the radiation coming from these space rocks is mutating the animals, turning them into monsters! The MegaCat requires people to step up and help. It is now on your shoulders to fight and resist this threat by combating different kinds of baddies while riding your trusty ship.
This title is basically a top-to-bottom scrolling action shooter. Large numbers of enemies will spew forth from above and try to overwhelm you with a tidal wave of attacks. Players must dodge these to avoid taking damage and potentially ending the stage at a loss. Fire away to eliminate any threats with a trusted essential weapon, and it does not run out of ammo, so you can go crazy letting it rip.
Aside from the regular gun, gamers can pick up upgrades to give their attacks new abilities. Such items offer the gameplay a dynamic style, giving opportunities to outplay seemingly impossible situations. It makes the experience engaging even when exposed to it for extended periods.
This is a review of the Nintendo Switch version. The mechanics are intuitive and easy to understand. It is also well thought out, it does not have the clunkiness seen in other offerings. The well-polished controls make for snappier movement and make evasion maneuvers more satisfying. To move your boat in any direction, simply use the left joystick and point it at the desired orientation. Pressing either ZL or ZR on the joycon will allow you to switch between a precision and fast movement setting. To fire the default weapon, simply press “b.”
Aiming is a no-brainer; you shoot at where your boat is currently facing. The “L” and “R” buttons fire two different special weapons; these range from missiles to torpedoes. A special move is available if you think you are stuck in a pinch. This is a heavy damage attack with a possibility to clear an entire screen’s worth of baddies.
A few game modes are available if ever the main campaign is getting tiresome. There is an arcade mode for a classic, point-based game. Practice, to check if your build is effective. An entire section called “Extra Mode” adds more challenges for those who are looking for it.
Feel like everything is overwhelming and difficult to finish a level? Grab a friend and play together locally. After Wave: Downfall supports a two-player couch co-op. With a comrade by your side, there is nothing that can stand in your way. There is no online functionality, though, and a leaderboard to compare your scores with other people is nowhere to be found.
The graphics feature a cartoony, anime-inspired chibi aesthetic with its characters. The landscape, ships, and some of the other features are rendered in a very stylized form. It uses a science fiction theme and reflects it well with the world design. The tracers fired from the weapons look impressive and satisfying. It gives the impression of using a heavy caliber gun. The bright and vibrant colors convey the message that it is a fun and wild game. It also has an easy to look at the user interface, and the functions can immediately be gleaned from just a glimpse.
The sounds are produced with high quality. The background music fits the theme so well and adds to the atmosphere. It helps to lessen the brunt of the grind, thanks to it being an enjoyable track. Special effects are meaty and make for an immersive experience.
In conclusion, After Wave: Downfall is simple in design but delivers hours of enjoyable arcadey goodness. This amount of joy exponentially grows thanks to the offline couch co-op. If ever you need more challenges, try the other game modes as well. This title is currently available for Nintendo Switch, Playstation, and Xbox. Grab a copy today!
