Armed with a brand-new Super Mega Digger 3000 Ultimate 2.0, along with its free Treasure-Detector set, you roll up your sleeves and get to work digging a hole in your garden.

It turns out the ground your garden happens to rest on is filled with… well, no spoilers – interesting discoveries, which get curiouser and curiouser the further you go.

Gameplay

A Game about Digging a Hole has a very simple gameplay loop that involves digging deeper into the ground, finding resources like minerals and rocks that you can then bring back up to the surface to sell for money. Naturally, the further down you go, the more valuable the minerals you can find.

The money you earn can then be used to purchase upgrades, like battery upgrades for your tool, to make the digging process even easier and also make it possible for you to go really deep down… all in the hopes of hitting that jackpot of a treasure as promised in the ad you saw which prompted you to buy the home. You also have a detector that makes it easier to locate treasures, like a secret mining shaft where a reward crate resides or even a suitcase filled with cash.

Aside from upgrades, there are also “consumables” that can help, including lights that you can affix onto literally any surface in the dark underground, which makes it much easier to see, and dynamite, which will make digging a bit easier, even after you’ve upgraded your shovel to a drill.

Despite being simple, the gameplay can be very addictive and fun in a fairly relaxing way. There are some real dangers here that can lead to a game over, such as getting stuck underground with no fuel left, falling to your death because you forgot to use the jetpack to soften your fall, or accidentally rubbing up against a lava rock, especially when you’re already low on health.

The content available in the game can be fairly short as well – around 3 hours’ worth of playtime – but for the price tag, it’s worth it. For achievement hunters, you’ll need to run the game through a second time since the Achievement mode is only unlocked after you’ve completed the game once. That would amount to a lot more playtime, overall.

A Game about Digging a Hole is surprisingly and addictively fun in a similar way to Minecraft and other digging or mining-style games, and like many fans of the game, we’re looking forward to any free updates or DLCs that the devs might want to roll out to add more content to the game.

That said, most of the games are admittedly dark, mainly because you are spending most of your playtime underground, where most of the action takes place. There are lights that you can place to brighten up the place a little, though.

In terms of sound, A Game About Digging A Hole has the perfect underground ambiance, which frames the atmosphere and setting of the game well. You can occasionally hear the sound of dripping water, though, which is a bit funny since you don’t get to find or see any water underground, and you don't hear the sound of birds, despite being more than 10 meters underground.

For a game that’s all about digging, A Game About Digging a Hole offers players plenty of depth (pun fully intended).
