Summary
A Fold Apart features a heartwarming story of a young couple who, due to a rare work opportunity, had to go through an extended stint of “LDR” (long-distance relationship) where the strength of their love for each other is tested. The game comes with unique paper folding-based puzzles where the goal is to get the character you’re playing as to the golden star to advance the storyline.
Plotline
The story in this game is mainly revealed through texts and internal monologues, and is advanced through solving puzzles and moving your character to the next piece of paper.
Not trying to spoil the story too much but this game features a story about a young couple who experienced a strain in their relationship due to being apart. Learn how the couple tried to get through their own fears, loneliness and insecurities as more hurdles were added along the way!
Gameplay
A Fold Apart features pretty impressive and unique puzzles where you’re expected to fold a beautifully-designed virtual paper in order to help the character reach the golden star. At the beginning, you’ll only get to fold the paper in a certain way, but the game really opens up the possibilities, allowing you to fold the virtual paper this way and that just so you can get the character to where they need to.
There are several challenges introduced in the game as you play. There are the robots which will prevent you from walking pass it, and there are heart crates that you can drag around to give your character a leg’s up. The most brain-teasing obstacle I’d say is the vanishing platforms. They will disappear when folded and reappear when the folded part is reopened. It gave the puzzles a whole new level of depth, alongside the rotation feature added to the game near the end, and it does give me quite a bit of headache at one point.
That being said, all of the puzzles here are fairly simple to solve, though some may take a lot more time than others, and I think that’s intentional on the developers’ part mainly because it can be frustrating if a really nice story is locked behind puzzles that the average person couldn’t solve.
Community
A Fold Apart is a game that really delves into the topic of a long-distance relationship and how people who are apart can struggle to keep their love for each other, especially when issues like dreams and work are added to the mix. The community may rally around these talking points and hold discussions over at the game’s Steam discussion board.
Graphics/ Sound
A Fold Apart features cutesy characters and (generally) striking colors that really brings out the art. I’m no game developer or graphic designer, but I’m also sure that the work that goes into coding a virtual foldable paper with animated surfaces is probably surmountable. It’s an impressive feat, for sure! I also love the soundtrack here. It really fits the scene you’re experiencing along with the characters
Conclusion
A Fold Apart may seem like any other cutesy story-rich puzzle adventure, but it is definitely a lot more than that. It boldly ventures into a topic that not many games are willing to touch with a mile-long pole. The game also manages to fit the unique and innovative, folding-driven gameplay around a story about putting in the work, both emotional and physical effort, to shorten the distance – hence, folding a paper – and keeping the love alive between people who are time zones apart due to work or whatever reason.
So, to put it simply, A Fold Apart is definitely a game that’s worth playing not only for its story but also for its one-of-a-kind puzzle gameplay. Buy it or wishlist it on Steam!
