WarPixIO Online is an MMO-style arena combat that’s visualized using the minimalistic look of most IO games. In addition to the fun, casual-like twin-stick combat, you’ll also need to collect purple mushrooms level up and unlock stat upgrades which are often crucial especially in a 1-on-1 fight. So, if you love simple yet competitive, browser-based games that you can just hop right into for a round or two, WarPixIO Online might just be the game for you.
To start, you just need to create your character. There are tons of customization options for you to choose from, and if these aren’t up to your tastes, you can even spend some of that starter cash you get - a whole 750G worth of them – to buy some cool skins and character packs from the Item Shop.
Gold can only be earned by playing at the moment since the “watch an ad” option is unavailable. I assume you can also buy more gold via the Gold Shop if it’s available as well.
Unlike the body and the head options, the default weapons are a bit limited, however. You can choose one of two weapons – the first with Defense as its primary stat while the other has Attack as its primary stat. Thankfully, you can remedy this once again by visiting the Item Shop. There isn’t quite a lot of weapons to choose from, but you can get some that you might like. There is even a bow that allows you to deal ranged damage at the cost of movement speed if you prefer that sort of thing.
However, for me, I’ve decided on purchasing the Demon Sword and it was the best decision I’ve made – it has helped me reach level 15 with only 1 “near-death experience” …can you believe I was actually running around for quite a while with just 1 health left?
That aside, once you’re ready, then just click “Play” to choose a server (USA or Russia) to dive into and start hacking your way to the top of the leaderboard! Note, however, that the server you choose can have a huge impact on your gameplay later on – the latency can be quite bad if you pick a server that’s too far away from you.
The combat aspect of WarPixIO Online is fairly straightforward and easy. You just need to know that WASD is used for movement, the mouse is used to turn your character around (to face your enemies) and the left mouse button is the one you need to attack.
Combat in this game is molded after the twin-stick style which basically means you’re your character can easily turn 360 degrees very smoothly and rapidly in this game. Though, it is unadvisable to take on opponents on two fronts. There are also plenty of nuances that advanced players would immediately take notice Mastering these little tricks will definitely help them defeat their opponents better, such as the art of running around your opponents as you attack in hopes of disorienting them enough for them to miss their retaliatory blows. Standing as still as a tree during combat is a huge no-no.
Although its twin-stick-like combat is the highlight of the game, that’s not all you should do as well. As you play, you should quickly see two types of mushrooms in the game – a red one and a purple one. The Red Mushroom can be consumed – simply by running over it – to restore a bit of health, while the Purple Mushroom will give you experience points. I’d recommend picking up every mushroom you see regardless of whether you need it, in the case of the red mushroom.
What is the experience points used for though? Well, as you may have guessed, it’s for leveling up your character. Every time you level up, you’ll get to choose one of three stat upgrades presented to you. I’d recommend starting with the HP upgrade if it is an option, and then picking up other stats like Speed and HP Leech after you have a comfortable amount of health in your health bar.
There are also bushes that are scattered around the arena. These serve as hiding spots I think, but I doubt their efficiency in hiding anyone really. Why? Well, firstly, even in the bush, your character name and health bar are visible (I think) so other players could easily suss you out. Another thing is that if the bush does conceal you, making a beeline to a bush with a player trailing you doesn’t help much since he already saw you going in and will literally beat around the bush to get you.
And if you do die, like any IO game, you’ll have to start afresh.
The community around this game is pretty sizeable. I do encounter a lot of players in the game but it is also possible that some of these “players” are bots because I’ve noticed that certain “players” don’t have a rank on the leaderboard.
The characters are absolutely adorable in their pixel-like way, and I enjoy the minimalistic graphics as well. There isn’t any music but there are sound effects when you deal damage. You can discern which weapons your opponents nearby are using simply by listening to the sound effects too – attacking with a bow sounds much different than with a sword.
WarPixIO Online is an amazingly addictive and competitive, arena-based IO game that offers a fun and thrilling twin-stick style combat. If you like IO games, this is definitely one game you’ll want to try!
