Plotline

The storyline in Zootopia Crime Files continues from the movie this game is based off on. In this timeline, Nick Wilde has already graduated from the police academy and was assigned to Officer Judy Hopps as her partner. Together, they set off to make a name for themselves as the best police team there is in the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD) while solving any cases that are sent their way.

Gameplay

As mentioned in the summary, the gameplay in Zootopia Crime Files is very similar to Criminal Case. Players who are familiar with the latter will have no problem jumping right into action in this game. For those who have not played Criminal Case before though, the game is still easy enough for you to pick up rather quickly especially after going through the game’s “tutorial-like” first case... and this is true even for younger players.

Being part of the Zootopia Police Department(ZPD), you’ll need to accompany Officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they head over to various crime scenes in the course of their investigation. Scenes that are listed as tasks in your tablet usually contain at least 1 clue that is critical to solving the case and will be filed away, but you will probably be repeating scenes even though when there aren’t any clues to gather because you will want to get as many stars per scene as you can.

You can earn up to 5 stars by accumulating points which you can gain by playing the same scenes again and again. However, it might be best to simply maximize the points you can get per scene by making full use of the combo system. You can get up to a 6x combo, provided that you are able to find all the items you need in quick succession.

That said, be warned that any misclick or tap will result in a reset in your accumulated multiplier combo. So, it’s important for you to be accurate in this game! If needed, you can even zoom into the scene just to make sure if the item you spotted is indeed the item you seek. Interestingly, since all the objects in the scene remain in the same location in the scene in every playthrough, you should be able to easily memorize the locations of some of the more common objects, allowing you to search for them quicker than before.

Each scene you head to will cost you a certain amount of energy and like most hidden object games, there are several ways for you to regain the energy you’ve lost. You could wait it out and let it regenerate, rather slowly I might add, by itself, or you could spend some premium gold to buy food items which when consumed will restore a specific amount of energy.

Of course, the best way to get a full refill for free is by simply leveling up, but in this game, leveling up can be quite difficult and will take a longer time especially after you’ve completed the tutorial case. If you managed to have some leftover stars after you’ve completed a case, you can exchange the stars for extra energy too.

New crime scenes often pop up as the case progresses and sometimes, you may get special puzzle scenes or a timed scene instead of the usual hidden object ones. In these scenes, you may be, for example, asked to swap tiles in a scene or to spot the difference between 2 pictures. If you are having trouble with a scene, be it a normal or a special one, you can get your backup officer to help you.

You’ll choose your backup before you enter a scene and each backup offers different numbers of hints. Naturally, the officer with the most hints will have a longer cooldown than the one with the least hints. This is mainly because the number of unused hints will actually be accounted for when your score is calculated at the end of the scene.

Aside from hints and backups, you can also buy boosters using game cash to get yourself some extra time, more hints or an instant 6x-combo. These boosters are activated automatically when you enter a scene.

After you’ve collected all the clues you need, you will then need to send them for analysis at Sloth’s lab (groans at the waiting time). Thankfully, some evidences can be examined by yours truly. To do so, you’ll need to spend a star – the very stars you’ve obtained from playing scenes.

The examination usually consists of a simple mini-game where you need to just press the Scan button or to wipe your finger on the evidence to clean it. Once done, you can earn a small amount of energy for your troubles. There isn’t a lot of variety when it comes to mini-games though, so this aspect of the game might get a bit boring after awhile. The same stars are also needed if you want to interrogate a potential suspect or a witness.

After collecting and analyzing evidences as well as talking to your witnesses and suspects, you should have a list of traits that will help you identify your culprit in your case file. You can then accuse the perpetrator by comparing his traits with the traits of the suspect you seek. You won’t get to play a new case immediately after completing the previous one though. Instead, you will need to spend some stars to unlock the next case.

Community

Since the game is inspired by the highly popular animated movie, Zootopia, the community in this game is pretty huge and consisted of mainly fans of the movie and of the hidden object game genre.

Graphics/ Sound

The cartoon graphics in Zootopia Crime Files is nothing short of superb! The visuals are often brightly colored, making each scene you play in as appealing and cheery as the next one. The game even has a nice background music that’s upbeat yet offers a tinge of mystery which matches the overall theme. There isn’t any voice acting though.

Conclusion

In short, Zootopia Crime Files is a great way for you to not only re-immerse yourself in the wonderful city of Zootopia, but also to continue following the storyline of the beloved Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. In terms of gameplay, the game shares many similarities with popular investigative hidden object game, Criminal Case, allowing this game to rope in players from latter. So, if you’re a fan of investigative hidden object games, of Zootopia, or of both, then you’ll definitely enjoy playing Zootopia Crime Files.
