Summary

What Remains of Edith Finch is a compelling piece of storytelling that can only be experienced, not told. It’s an adventure like no other, letting you explore a contained world made large by its narrative. Though it doesn’t offer much in gameplay, it destroys the monotony of walking and crawling around the confines of the Finch home by putting you in the shoes of other Finch family members while you experience their lives and defining moments.

If you’re looking for a long, action-packed experience, What Remains of Edith Finch isn’t one. Yet, it’s a must-play for everybody and even if it’s just two hours long, it contains a story - or a collection of stories - that can make you reflect for a lifetime.

Before we take a look at what Edith’s story holds in store, let me warn you in advance: there will be story spoilers ahead.

Plotline

What Remains of Edith Finch’s story - or collection of stories - is its main draw. It won numerous awards thanks to its story (including Best Narrative in The Game Awards 2017), and it’s easy to see why: the Finches seem cursed and all members of the family met a tragic end.

You’ll play as Edith, a 17 year-old girl who returned to the Finch home after inheriting a key from her recently-deceased mother, Dawn. As you explore massive house, you’ll unlock story tidbits told through reading diaries, notes, and even comics. Its well-written stories are further made better by the game’s outstanding and innovative storytelling methods and voice acting.

Without diving deep into spoiler territory, you’ll learn about characters like the original patriarch, Odin Finch who sailed with his house to America to try and be rid of the family curse. His child, Edie (Edith Sr.), is the longest-living matriarch who experienced and went through almost all of the family’s deaths. In addition, you’ll get to play through the stories of Edie’s firstborn Molly, child star Barbara, and other kids like Walter, Sam, and Calvin.

Gameplay

What Remains of Edith Finch can pass off as a walking simulator. You’ll spend most of your time walking around the book-filled corridors and uniquely-designed rooms of the Finch home, looking around the many books, portraits, and paintings. In a way, this will pass off as boring to most players. Controls are easy-to-learn: press R2 to interact and you’ll use the analog sticks to twist screws, open latches, and turn doorknobs.

Thankfully, as you go through the narrative, you’ll stop at walking and do something different. There are story elements that let you become an owl, a sea monster, or even a turtle, depending on the part you’re in. There are even intricately-designed 2D levels and even one where you go inside a comic book to play out a family member’s story. There are even parts you get to shoot pictures and even play on a swing.

Though the gameplay is quite intuitive and straightforward, there are instances wherein you’ll be lost wondering what to do next. Even if objectives and waypoints are highlighted by lights, the game doesn’t tell you what to do or where to turn next which can be irritating if you’re stuck in a particular area. For example, it took me a while to figure out how to properly use a swing and trigger a certain event. It’d be great if the game had waypoints or tell you what to do next.

Community

What Remains of Edith Finch is solely a singleplayer game. There are no multiplayer elements, though the game has a vibrant community on Steam.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, What Remains of Edith Finch looks a little dated at its core, more like a game released in 2013 than in 2017. Thing is, this is negligibl thanks to the overall world design. The Finch home is an old home, and you’ll be able to see and experience this as you move around it. The individual rooms have their own designs which fit the personalities and interests of the Finch family members they belong to. For example, Barbara’s room is full of her trophies, movie cutouts, and posters of her time as a child star while Sam’s room is decorated with the photos he’s taken and from his time in the military.

The same can be said about each Finch’s individual story levels. Lewis’ level stands out the most. It starts off as a 2D level and gradually turns into a full and detailed 3D experience. Molly’s level turns you into different animals, while you get to play as toys in Gregory’s.

Audio plays a role in storytelling and What Remains of Edith Finch uses it perfectly. The voice acting is impeccable and the music fits the different atmospheres, making you feel the emotions you’re supposed to feel.

Conclusion

Overall, What Remains of Edith Finch is a compelling tale. Even if you’re not big on slow, story-centric games, it’s definitely a title you have to play. It proves that games are an effective way to tell compelling stories and it’s safe to say it contains of the best narratives in this generation. If you’re a PlayStation Plus member, you have to download and play it right away.
