Summary

There is no doubt about it: Titanfall 2 is one of the most underrated FPS games in history. Though it’s low-key and is overshadowed by more popular franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield, it holds up well when compared to these giants.

Created by Respawn Entertainment and set in the same universe as Apex Legends, it’s a game that perfectly balances controlling a mech-like vehicle of war known as a Titan and first-person shooting. It even has platforming mechanics that complement the FPS aspects. It has a few multiplayer modes as well as a fantastic six-hour campaign that lets you explore a planet and fight the game’s antagonists, the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation or IMC.

With that said, should this free PS Plus title something you should download and play right away? Let’s check out what it has to offer first:

Plotline

Titanfall 2’s storyline isn’t exactly what you’d call unique though it manages to fit into the themes and the gameplay elements fairly well. Without diving deep into spoilers, you’ll play as Frontier Militia Rifleman Jack Cooper who is training to become a titan pilot under the tutelage of Pilot Ty Lastimosa. You’ll be up against the power and resource-hungry Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation, or the IMC, and their mercenary grunts who are dead-set on defeating the Frontier Militia.

The story is set in a single planet where you’ll explore steep cliffs along with industrial areas like labs and IMC bases. You’ll forge an unlikely partnership with a titan, BT, and complete missions together.

Gameplay

Titanfall 2’s gameplay can be divided into two main parts: regular first-person shooting action and piloting titans. If you’ve played Apex Legends (which is likely), the gunplay and movement feel similar, considering that they have similar weapons. One thing that sets Titanfall 2 apart is the wall-running and double-jumping which is incredibly fun. Mastering how and when to use them is crucial, especially since most of the campaign levels and multiplayer stages require you to use them well. Thankfully, there’s a practice stage called “The Gauntlet” where you can master the basics.

Piloting a titan is one of the best parts of Titanfall 2. Unlike the faster-paced FPS parts, it’s a bit slow and tactical, yet requires you to be quick on your feet. In the campaign, you can change titan loadouts and weapons on the fly, enabling you to freely adjust on the situation at hand. These loadouts give your titan different skills and specialties. For example, the Expedition loadout enables you to fire a barrage of machine gun fire, while the Legion automatically hones in on your opponents. In multiplayer though, you have to grind and unlock certain types of titans first before you’re able to use them.

Speaking of multiplayer, there are several modes in Titanfall 2, giving you a lot of variety. These include Amped Hardpoint which is a “hold a capture point mode”, Pilots vs Pilots where you can’t ride a titan, Attrition which lets you fight alongside waves of soldiers, and Frontier Defense which is a co-op mode. Apart from which, the game is also equipped with the standard free-for-all and capture the flag modes.

Though you’ll mostly spend time playing multiplayer, Titanfall 2’s best aspect is its campaign mode. The element that stands out the most about it is its level-design and unique gameplay aspects. There’s always something new on every level. For example, there’s a part where you can travel through time and one where you use a power core to open doors and interact with objects. The wall-running parts is like playing a platformer on steroids. While the boss fights are lacking and are quite straightforward, the amount of variety and action-packed sequences are a joy to experience.

Community

Titanfall 2 has a large devoted community. You can dive into one of the many Discord servers or visit its populated subreddit and interact with its many fans. Finally, it’s also important to note that since it is a new free PS Plus game, you can easily find new players in multiplayer.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, it’s no surprise that Titanfall 2 is arguably one of the best-looking first-person shooters this generation. Despite the crowded scenes and high-quality textures, there are also no frame rate drops and any visual problems at that. Moreover, the level designs are nothing short of fantastic regardless if they’re inside an industrial area or in the middle of a wilderness in planet Typhon.

Conclusion

Overall, Titanfall 2 is a must-play. If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, it download it right away and start playing. With its outstanding FPS elements and great graphics, voice acting, and level design, it’s one of the most underrated games today and deserves more of the spotlight. Give it a shot and start fighting the IMC to protect your home planet!
