Back then if you told me that the best sports game in 2019 would be a baseball game, I’d think you’d be pulling my leg. After playing nearly 20 hours of MLB The Show 19 though, it is more plausible.
To be honest, I’ve never taken interest in baseball and the only experience I have with this favorite American past time is afternoon softball games back in the day. I thought baseball was a boring sport to watch and even play, but MLB 19 somehow changed this perspective and is the perfect gateway for people who don’t know anything about the sport to learn more about it. Like most sports, it has a lot of intricacies and depth: it’s just not about swinging the bat and pitching a fastball.
Unlike most of its peers though, it doesn’t have as many microtransactions and most of its appeal, at least to me, lies on the singleplayer modes. With that said, it was PlayStation Plus’ free offerings last October. If you get to play it though, will it be a home run or will it be a fly ball? Let’s check out what it has to offer:
The only part where there’s a story in MLB The Show 19 is its career mode, Road to the Show. As its name suggests, you’ll end up creating a character or using one of the many available in the game’s roster and work your way to the MLB. You’ll start in the minor leagues (double-A and triple-A), develop there and if you’re good enough, get signed by the Major League affiliate of your minor league team.
Though the story doesn’t exactly have emotional strings or gimmicks, it’s pretty well-made and straightforward. You won’t get to experience any cringe-worthy moments like those in other sports games (looking at you, 2K and EA). You’ll get to interact with teammates and choose how to do so, depending on the personality (Captain, Maverick, etc) you prefer.
In terms of gameplay, MLB The Show 19 is pure, unadulterated baseball. It delivers a solid MLB experience, making it seem like you’re actually managing a team in Franchise mode or you’re your created player in Road to the Show. The authenticity doesn’t stop there: the March to October and Moments, a mode where you recreate the best moments of the sport, also delivers.
For an entry-level player, I found the controls quite intuitive and easy to master. When batting, it doesn’t take a baseball legend to figure out how to do various swings (contact, regular, bunt, and power) and what they’re for. The same can be said about stealing bases, pitching, and fielding. The hard part, however, is mastering them. Personally, it took me several hours to get used to the AI pitchers and figure out how to steal bases. Pitching is also a challenge and it’s a must to practice first before taking your act online.
Speaking of online modes, online matches are fun and quite fast. You’ll go into an At Bat (AB) after a player has had several swings or pitches. This speeds up the game and is a great touch. That aside, the game pits you against players of the same level which makes for quite a fun experience. That aside, you can also play with your friends, although find the option and means to do was a chore. For some reason, it was hidden behind several menus and I had to check a guide to get this done.
In terms of progression in Road to the Show, your character’s stats aren’t tied to microtransactions or any digital currency which should be the standard in other sports games. Diamond Dynasty requires you to buy stubs (in-game currency), though you can progress by playing other game modes.
The MLB The Show 19 has a large and robust online community. Not only will you be treated to numerous guides by veteran players on YouTube, but also interact with others on Reddit. Granted, you’ll be able to learn from the community and improve your game by watching them.
MLB The Show 19 is, without a doubt, one of the best-looking sports games to date. It features minor and major league baseball stadiums as well as old and historic stadiums. The character models are authentic, while the animations are smooth even on a base PS4. In addition, also features MLB commentary that contributes to the immersion.
Overall, MLB The Show 19 is undoubtedly the best sports game this year. Its authentic gameplay, great progression mechanics, ease and intuitiveness, and fantastic presentation make it a must-play. If you’re tempted to invest in a baseball game it’s highly recommended to give this PlayStation exclusive a shot. Doing so would give you a home run for your investment.
