Plotline

The local authority has plans to demolish the municipal zoo and replace it with a more profitable supermarket, but Charlotte is determined to help save the zoo by giving it new life instead... and she’ll need your help to not only renovate the zoo so it’s once more habitable for the animals but also to eventually bring all the animals back one by one. Will you be able to bring the zoo back to its former glory?

Gameplay

Family Zoo – The Story starts off with a pretty simple tutorial teaching you some aspects of the gameplay. Generally though, being a match-3 game and all, you’ll need to match 3 or more “fruits” (though technically, some of the items are veggies rather than fruits) to collect them from the board. However, it is a bit vague on how you could get some of the more powerful boosters.

To get boosters, you just need to match more than 3 fruits together. Some of these boosters include the Grapefruit bomb (match-4), the Mango Boom (match-5), the Watermelon Splash (match-6) and the ultimate bomb of them all, the Big Barrel which can literally clear the entire playing area of any fruit with a single tap or swipe.

Unlike many matching games out there, you don’t need to match your bombs with normal fruits just to get them to go boom. Instead, you can simply double tap on them to detonate or you can swipe them with any nearby fruit to get the exact same effect. Some bombs in this game can be “mixed” to produce greater effects but to find out which works with which may require a bit of experimentation.

Due to the explosive effects, the resulting cascade of fruits can be pretty satisfying to watch in this game. In some way, from all the effects and sound, it does feel like the spinning reel of a slot machine. Best yet, every explosion you set off will fill up the Crazy Orange meter. Once full, you’ll get a free Crazy Orange booster added to your playing area. Crazy Orange works by clearing all fruit of the same type and color to the one you’ve swapped the booster with.

Levels in this game is basically moves and objectives-based. This means you’ll have a limited number of moves to complete the required level goals. It’s pretty similar to most other match-3 games, where the strategy of getting a higher score is to minimize the number of moves you need to clear a level, and then letting the game itself use those extra moves in a “last hurrah” at the end of the level to help you ding up a bunch of extra points.

Sounds simple enough? Well, as you play, you’ll get to advance from the easier levels to the tougher ones, further ramping up the difficulty level of each game, especially when obstacles are involved. There are plenty of obstacles in Family Zoo, including multiple layers of grasses that you can clear by matching over them, mushrooms that you have to drop to the bottom of the board, slabs and chestnuts that you can clear by matching right next to them, and many more. Note that aside from serving as a way to hamper your gameplay, these obstacles may sometimes function to distract you from the true objectives of the match.

Once you reached a certain game milestone, a new game mode will be unlocked. This game mode is basically the same as the previous one except that instead of earning a ticket for every completed level, you’ll get a resource instead. Resource is needed to perform certain tasks, such as buying new enclosures and decorating your zoo

As the game is mainly match-3 heavy, the zoo simulation part is drastically simplified in this game. In contrary to other sims where you can actually choose your own decors and place them wherever you like, this game only allows you to choose from 3 fixed options and the items will automatically be placed in the slowly restored zoo.

Since you’ll only have 5 health to spend in this game before you’ll have to wait for it to be restored over time, it is always best to not waste any health by failing a level. You can avoid losing a health by using special power-ups like rakes and fruit rockets which you can buy using coins you’ve earned from playing levels. You can also buy extra moves for 300 coins, but if that’s the case, then you might as well fail the level and simply use the 300 coins to buy 5 more health. It is, after all, the better deal.

Community

Family Zoo – The Story has been getting quite the attention from casual gamers since its release and as such, the community around this game is pretty sizeable. Adding friends in this game is rather beneficial as well since friends can gift health to each other.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics and the sound in this game are both very well-done. As mentioned before, the explosive effects and the dinging of cascading matches make the game feel like a slot game at times. Aside from that, the game does have some nice ambience which fits the whole “zoo theme” like realistic animal sounds. The quirky music does seem a bit out of place at a zoo though, but not in a match-3 level. However, since it’s looped pretty heavily, you may find yourself turning it off just to avoid getting the music stuck in your head.

Conclusion

All in all, Family Zoo – The Story is a rather fun and entertaining match-3 puzzle game with some zoo simulation elements. The game is able to give you that satisfying feeling of progression since you’ll be slowly but steadily restoring each part of the zoo, be it replacing the fences, planting flowerbeds, or bringing the animals back to their upgraded enclosures. This is perhaps the main reason the game is able to keep you coming back to play the game. Of course, the match-3 games themselves are pretty challenging to play as well.

Everything in this game just feels well-rounded and perfectly optimized for maximum entertainment and replay value. So, if you love match-3 games with a lot of fancy explosions and cascade effects, this is definitely the game you’ll want to play.
