The game starts off with a tutorial. Although match-3 games are generally easy to learn, Fairy Mix does have a lot of element that you’ll need to know about to be able to use them effectively. Furthermore, the tutorial isn’t as comprehensive as it didn’t mention anything about the swirled flasks, which you’ll encounter even in level 1 of the game, but don’t worry! It’s really easy to figure out!
To play the game, you’ll need to match three or more adjacent flasks of the same color together in order to collect them. You can match in a vertical or horizontal manner, but not in diagonal. Every match you make will cause some of the nearby flasks, which are selected at random, to gain silver swirls on them and if you match flasks near to these silver-swirled flasks, some of the silver ones may be “upgraded” to golden swirls instead. What is the purpose of these swirls? Well, the normal flask counts as a 1 when collected. So, when you match 3 normal flasks, you will get 3 collected flasks. Silver-swirled flasks counts as 2 while gold-swirled flasks count as 3. Thus, for example, if you matched one of each flask together, you will then be collecting 6 flasks instead of just 3! The swirls work like a multiplier! Amazing, right?
Moreover, if you can match more than 3 flasks together, you can create a flask that is a lot more valuable! For example, if you match 4 flasks, the flask produced will have a pattern of oscillating waves behind it. If the waves are moving vertically, this means that the flask will remove the entire column it is on when matched while if the waves are horizontal, this means that the flask will remove the entire row it is on when it is matched. You can also gain flasks with lightning in them from cascades that will clear both row and column that it is on when matched.
When you match 5 flasks together in a linear form, meaning either in a row or in a column, you can get a super potion, which you can then activate it by matching it up. Super potions are rather unique as their effects differ depending on the type of potion it is. For instance, the yellow super potion will trigger a massive sandstorm that is able to clear 3 columns while blue super potion will allow you to select any 3 flasks to collect them from the game field after they are matched with other flasks of their respective colors. The green super potion is even more special in some way as you can choose which of the 8 directions, namely vertical, horizontal and both diagonals on both planes (up and down), you want to collect the flasks in. If you’re unsure of the directions, the tiles beneath the flasks will glow in a greenish color when this is active.
There is also another type of match 5 that will form a T- or an L-shape when matched. These matches will produce glowing potions that can be later activated (via matching) to clear all the flasks in a 1-tile radius around it. Sometimes, you may even encounter new elements, such as clouds that you’ll need to collect by match flasks nearby. These clouds have 2 different intensities of colors - one of which is darker in color while the other is lighter. The dark cloud will require 1 match to collect and the lighter-colored cloud requires 2 matches instead!
In Fairy Mix, the game objective is pretty straightforward. You just need make matches to collect the required number of flasks (of each type) to complete the level, most of the time anyway. There are also other level types, including timed matches, whereby you are given 55 seconds to start with, but you’re also given flasks with bonus time on them that you can collect to add precious seconds to your timer; and also boss levels in which you’ll come face-to-face with the evil witch!
In the boss level, only the flasks that are around the evil witch can harm her. So you should take good note of the colors of those flasks and make only those matches in order to reduce her health. Her health bar is on the left part of your screen, by the way. However, the witch will not just timidly take damage from you! She will occasionally retaliate by vanishing one of your flasks at random, ruining your plans of making huge matches or to even trigger a cascade!
With the exception of the timed level, most levels provide you with limited number of moves. If there are any leftover moves after the level goal is achieved, the Fairy Mix bonanza will be triggered. Random flasks will be given special abilities and activated to earn you bonus points! There are up to 3 stars that you can earn per level and they are important to help Sorceress Jeannie restore the ruined buildings that the evil witch left in her wake!
To do so, you will need to earn materials from certain locations on the map, such as the lumberjack’s house, by spinning for them. If you have more stars in that location, you’ll earn more resources (5 stars will earn you 1, 10 stars will get you 2 while 15 stars will give you 3 materials). Each spin has a cooldown timer, so you cannot just spam spinning to get the stuff you need. Once you have enough materials, you can then start the restoration process for a building and wait for the duration to complete. Each restored building will provide you with a magic bonus too! For instance, restoring the estate provides +1 to maximum life while building the bench will give you an extra move on all levels!
If any of the levels prove to be too difficult for you and you’ve failed, you will lose a life. There are 5 lives in total and you can easily regain them over time. Thankfully though, you can avoid losing any lives as much as possible with the help of in-game boosters, such as fireball, ice arrow, tornado and lightning bolt. These boosters are level-locked and require real cash to buy though!
Fairy Mix is a relatively new game, but the game’s Facebook fan page has already 38 thousand likes and that number is increasing! Nonetheless, don’t be fooled by the low number of likes though, the community in this game is huge – more than 2 million of active players monthly as most of its player base is playing the game via their mobile devices. It is an amazing feat considering that the game has just been released less than 3 months ago!
As promised by the game, the graphics in Fairy Mix is nothing short of spectacular, especially the game effects! The flasks look so beautiful and are positively gleaming. Their animations are all very well-done as well! The game also contains very pleasant and enjoyable music that you cannot get bored of even though you’ve been listening to it for hours. It is that good!
In short, Fairy mix is very addictive and fun-filled match-3 game in which you are able to lend little Sorceress Jeannie a hand in preparing and collecting her potions so she could combat the evil witch and, hopefully and eventually, banish her from the lands once and for all! Match at least 3 of the same-colored flasks to collect them, but if you can match more up, well, you’ll be in for a treat! The special flasks that you’ll get are so much fun to play with and they are so unique! The gameplay is rather special as well since the game also provides an extra chain of match-3 mini games at various locations where you can collect resources from, so you can earn stars to spin the wheel and get the material you need. Then you can use those materials to restore the many ruins the witch left in her wake! The boosters that the game provides are very special too despite requiring you to spend real money to buy it. Thus, if you’re looking for a match-3 game that screams “innovative” and is visually appealing, Fairy Mix is definitely the game for you! Try it now!
