Find out more here!If you love legendary JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, and Phantasy Star, well, hold on to your hats, as Battle Chasers will definitely blow you away! The only problem here is that they need some funds to complete this game, so do stay awhile and lend us your ears (or in this case, your eyes).
Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a western-created RPG that is based on the comic series of the same name and it pays tribute to the popular JRPG genre. In this game, you’ll be given 5 characters (eventually) to choose from, namely the power-gauntlet-wearing Gully; the fallen paladin-turned-sellsword, Garrison; wanted fugitive and notorious outlaw, Red Monika; the wizened old mage, Knolan, and the ancient war golem, Calibretto. Each of them has their own backstories and unique abilities that can be vital in certain situations. However, you are only allowed to have up to 3 of them in your team at any time, so it might be a bit tough trying to figure out who to bring along and who to leave behind at times.
Furthermore, much like the old Diablo game, in Battle Chasers, you’ll only have 1 town - the desolate town of Harm’s Way - to prepare for the battle ahead. The town is equipped with important vendors who will sell you a variety of armor, weapons and other goodies, and will also buy up any loot you brought back from your incursions. The town also features a stash for you to store items too. This stash is very important because any item you bring into the overworld or the dungeon will be lost if your team die in there.
That being said, the game features an overworld that has plenty of hidden dungeons and rare bosses for you to seek out and challenge. Combat in this game is turn-based and showcases 3 major gam mechanics – the Dual Mana system, Active Initiative bar and Battle Surges. In Battle Chasers, there are no basic attacks as you’ll be using abilities exclusively.
Each ability either consumes blue mana (the core mana pool) or generates red mana (bonus pool of mana). This means that even if your hero is spent (no more blue mana), you can still generate and use up the red mana in place of the lost blue mana. Different characters have different preferences and some may even suffer penalties for using red mana. Thus, managing resource (your mana) is one of the primary strategies in Battle Chasers.
Active Initiatives, on the other hand, are the random buffs and debuff that you’ll get depending on your surroundings. For example, if you’re in a swamp, you’ll need to keep an eye out for the poison gas debuff. If it does appear, you’ll need to strategically re-position your characters into a slot that is beneficial or not detrimental to you. Situational awareness and knowing how to counter problems that arise are important here. There are also perks and passive bonuses that are sorted like in a tech tree. You can earn perk points to unlock new abilities by leveling up, finding rare lore relics and as rewards for defeating rare bosses.
The most interesting thing about Battle Chasers is the randomness. This is particularly evident in the dungeons. Rooms, monsters, traps, treasures, vendors, NPCs and even shrines in move about in this game. Thus, when you return to the same dungeon for a second go at a much tougher difficulty, you will not only get an entirely “new” (in some sense) dungeon to enjoy, rare artifacts and NPCs will also be generated in the dungeon.
Sound like fun? Well, you’re not the only one! The game already reached its fifth stretch goals and with your help, you can help push it to the sixth. The developers has plenty to offer in terms of rewards, including a guaranteed copy of the game, beta access, free Battle Chasers comic books, soundtracks and even an exclusive Battle Chaser T-Shirt. Naturally, the more you pledge, the more goodies you’ll receive!
