PUBG is finally coming to the PlayStation 4 this December. As much as we want to celebrate the advent of chicken dinners on Sony’s platforms, it faces a few problems and challenges. Can it challenge Fortnite’s dominance? Let’s find out. WWGDB - PUBG Lands on the PS4: Will It Be a Threat to Fortnite's Dominance?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, popularly known as PUBG, is finally heading to the PlayStation 4. The game has a December 7th release date which means we won’t have to wait long for our chicken dinners. This revolutionary game that undoubtedly popularized an entire genre will have to deal with the imposing shadow Fortnite cast. So, can it grab a foothold on Sony’s console or will it be a flop? Let’s check the details.

PUBG’s PS4 details

PUBG PS4 will come in both retail and digital. Digital pre-orders come in three editions. Namely, these are the Looter’s Edition, Survivor’s Digital Edition, and Champion’s Digital Edition. The last two come with the base game, survival pass, coins, and BP. If you pre-order, you will also receive digital skins based on PS4 exclusives, like the Nathan Drake skin and Ellie’s backpack in the Last of Us. The game will also come with its already-existing three maps. These are Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok. A fourth map is in the pipeline and will arrive in the near future.

Unlike Fortnite though, you will need to pay to play. The standard edition costs $30 and you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online. Mouse and keyboard support isn’t in the works, which means using the Dualshock 4 is must. This brings a plethora of possible problems if you consider PUBG’s weapon attachment mechanics.

Is it long overdue?

Unlocking a supply crate in PUBG

Saying that it is long overdue is an understatement. PUBG held off on a PlayStation 4 release for a year, due to Sony not having an early access program. This is a little weird since Fortnite is still classified as an early access title. Plus, PUBG Corp signed a one-year exclusivity deal with Windows, which is why the was released earlier on XBox One.

In a span of a year, Fortnite and H1Z1 took over the majority of the PlayStation 4 player-base with the former getting the lion’s share. In the same timeframe, Fortnite had become a better optimized and more popular game, especially with young players. Well hey, if you ignore a platform that holds more than 70 million players, you’re bound to get overshadowed.

Can it threaten Fortnite’s dominance?

H1Z1 failed to make a dent which is understandable since Daybreak is a relatively small developer compared to Epic Games. Meanwhile, PUBG Corp and the parent company, Bluehole, may have the resources to somehow get things done. However, they’ll have to deal with the following challenges:

Money matters

Fortnite is a free game across all platforms. PUBG costs $30 which may be cheap, but is way higher than Fortnite’s price tag. In addition, you’ll need to have a PlayStation Plus subscriber to play it on the PS4. Budget gamers may forgo PUBG due to its higher costs. If there are free options, why would you go for the paid one?

An unoptimized mess

Although PUBG is a fantastic game, it’s an unoptimized mess. Who can forget the disastrous XBox release where textures failed to load. This led to invisible walls and buildings appearing like something off a late 90s game. Bugs and glitches were prevalent. If the PlayStation release will be riddled with these problems, it surely won’t be a good thing.

COD: Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode

Earlier this year, COD: Black Ops 4 came with a battle royale mode called Blackout. It’s a fantastic mode and its slowness blended well with COD’s fast-paced gameplay. It is a smoother, better optimized version of PUBG. Considering their respective price tags, they target the same demographic which will mean more trouble for the former.

PUBG can succeed if...

Aiming ADS in PUBG

If PUBG wants to hold a candle vs Fortnite and its competitors, it needs to take advantage of the following:

Fortnite’s building mechanics are tiring

People who want to just shoot something and not build a skyscraper in the process have trouble dealing with Fortnite’s build-centric gameplay. Honestly, it’s exhausting and even players with top-tier gunplay skills can’t do much against power builders. PUBG’s advent comes as a breath of fresh air. Players can now focus purely on shooting and running for cover instead of farming resources and holding ridiculous building battles.

If it’s marketed as a mature and “serious” game

A lot of adults play Fortnite, but its cartoony and goofy art style and large concentration of kid players make it appear as a kid’s game. If you play with random squads, you’re almost always going to end up playing with a spoiled 10 year old who claims that he’s a pro though his skills say otherwise.

Though PUBG has a “T” rating, marketing it as a serious and mature game may help older players separate from Fortnite. They’re more than capable of shelling out $30. Plus, they won’t have to deal with bearing the stigma of playing a kid’s game.

Here’s to hoping PUBG’s release is smooth and the game won’t suffer from optimization and stability issues. Though it’s arrival is long overdue, PS4 players will surely welcome it with open arms. After all, it’s still an incredibly popular and fun game. However, it's best to wait for reviews before spending: you would not want to shell out money for a badly-ported game, right?
