5 Highly-Anticipated PlayStation 4 Games We Look Forward to Playing in 2018
Jan 6, 2018 | 1 Votes

The PlayStation 4 had an amazing year in 2017. After all, it was a year bannered by PlayStation exclusives like Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn and games such as Nier Automata and Yakuza 0. Now that this chapter in our gaming lives is coming to a close, it’s time to start anticipating the future which brings us to ask: what are some of the titles we should be hyped up about?
Well, there are dozens of games releasing next year, but we’ve selected a few that you would want to give serious considerations about buying. Note that these may or may not be PlayStation 4 exclusives. With that said, here are some of which:
Monster Hunter: World
Release date: January 26, 2018
Also available on XBox and PC, Monster Hunter World is arguably a gaming equivalent of a curveball. Nobody anticipated Capcom to bring their celebrated franchise back into a PlayStation console, especially after staying in the Nintendo for years. In a nutshell, it is an action-RPG wherein you team up with three other players or go solo to hunt for various creatures. Note that by “creatures”, we mean large acid-spitting lizards to rock-covered wyverns, and 20-foot farting gorillas.
Capcom held two betas, one for PlayStation Plus users and another for everyone, which were well-received. The game is noticeably geared towards a brand new audience while retaining the rather challenging gameplay its long-time fans love. With a release date slated at the end of January, this is definitely the first must-buy title this year.
Last of Us 2
Release date: Late 2018
Yes, Naughty Dog is making The Last of Us 2, the sequel to the universally-acclaimed The Last of Us, and it has been announced for 2018. A trailer was released early this year in Paris Games Week, and it featured new characters. Although it was subject to controversy due to being extremely violent, it fanned the fires of anticipation. After all, its predecessor gained 10/10 reviews from almost every gaming pundit who reviewed it and it even won the Most Anticipated Game Award in The Game Awards.
The Last of Us 2 will likely still have Ellie, while it is unknown that Joel will still be in the picture. Nevertheless, the game promises to have a top-notch story and the all-too familiar bloody, post-apocalyptic setting where both living humans and the zombie-like “clickers” are deadly threats. We just hope there won’t be any hiccups in the development because we can’t wait for this!
Days Gone
Release date: Early 2018
Days Gone is an action-horror survival game where you will play as Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter. Despite his rather blessed-sounding name, he is anything but religious: he rides a chopper bike, can brutally assault human enemies, and of course, mow down hordes of zombies, called Freakers, with his vast array of guns. The game features an open world complete with towns where the undead settle. Entering them can treat you to rich resources, but also put you at great risk to be overwhelmed.
Overall, this PS4 exclusive is highly-ambitious, with hundreds of enemies coming at you at the same time. It is set in the United States, specifically in the Pacific Northwest which is geographically varied. You can walk around in a lush meadow which is just a five-minute bike ride away from a forest. Nothing much is known about the game, but it promises to be another stand out title in 2018.
God of War
Release date: Early 2018
Another PlayStation exclusive, the new God of War game features an older Kratos and his son Atreus. Without diving much into spoiler territory, our axe-wielding protagonist now lives in the realm of the Norse gods, with his vengeance against the Olympians all but a distant memory. Instead of the high mountains and marble pillars of Olympus, you will be guiding Kratos throughout the rugged forests of cold wildlands of the Nordic realm.
The game will feature everything the fans want in a GoW game: satisfying combat, beautiful graphics, and a compelling story. Atreus will play a large part in combat since you can command him to do certain tasks and even participate in the battles. It also promises to have a good amount of exploration elements.
Spiderman 2018
Release date: Q1/Q2 2018
Our favorite web slinger is back in action in 2018. Set in open-world New York, the game will feature a brand new storyline not tied to the movies and comics. Here, you will take the role of an older, 23 year old Peter Parker who is about to graduate from college. The game will feature environmental combat, stealth elements, and parkour. We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to swing around the concrete skyscrapers of NYC!
Honorable Mentions
Apart from the five above mentioned games, here are some of the other titles we’re also looking forward to playing in 2018.
- Death Stranding
- Trails of Cold Steel III
- Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
- Code Vein
- Metal Gear Survive
- Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Far Cry 5
- Kingdom Come Deliverance
- Shadow of the Colossus

With a trailer released in The Game Awards that brings more questions than answers, we can’t wait to unravel the mysteries of this new Hideo Kojima produced game.

Though it was released in Japan in 2017, it’s likely to be localized and released late 2018. It is currently one of Nihon Falcom’s flagship title, the sequel to Trails of Cold Steel I & 2, and part of the Legend of Heroes: Trails universe.

Ace Combat’s universe timeline is as convoluted, but AC7: Skies Unknown is an indirect sequel to Ace Combat 0, 4, and 5, which were all released on the PlayStation 2. You will once again take to the skies of the Kingdom of Erusea. It’s likely to come out in early 2018.

Nothing much is known about Code Vein, except that it features a post-apocalyptic setting and dungeons. The characters are vampires with superhuman abilities. It is being developed by Bandai Namco and due to be released this year.

This is a spinoff of the Metal Gear series and is the first one to be developed by Konami after Hideo Kojima’s departure. The release date is slated to be sometime in February 2018.

Finally, after numerous delays, Ni No Kuni II is set to be released on January 19th. It is a third-person RPG and the art style gives out a beautiful Studio Ghibli vibe.

Developed and published by Rockstar Studios, Red Dead Redemption is a western-themed RPG and is a sequel to Red Dead Redemption 2. Its release date is slated to be in Q2 of 2018.

Arguably the most controversial game on this list, Fallout 5 is set in Montana, USA where you will get to fight against religious zealots. Ubisoft pegged its release date to be on March 27, 2018.

Developed by Warhorse Studios, Kingdom Come Deliverance is set in open-world Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) and you will be playing as a blacksmith embroiled in a large-scale conflict. It is due to be released in February 13, 2018.

A complete remake of the PS2 classic, Shadow of the Colossus 2 will be released on February 6, 2018.
