Music is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of a video game. Without it, games would feel bland and underwhelming. Thing is, some games take it up a notch and introduce tracks you’d want to add to your playlist. WWGDB - 9 Video Game OSTs Your Playlist Needs

Music conveys emotions. In video games, they’re a major element: they cue and effectively communicate how players should feel. May it be fear, excitement, or anticipation, they undoubtedly fill this role well. After all, every most gamers fondly recall fighting bosses while an epic soundtrack plays in the background.

If your playlist lacks video game OSTs, you’re missing out. You’d want to treat your ears and make your headphones play some of the standout beats in the history of gaming. Here are some of the tracks you have to add to your playlist:

NieR Automata: Amusement Park

NieR: Automata is one of the standout games of 2017, and it even won Best Music in The Game Awards in the same year. Its soundtrack is composed mainly by Keiichi Okabe and Keigo Hoashi. Just about every track in the game is memorable, complementing the game’s atmosphere and themes pretty well. After all, Yoko Taro crafted its tale which enough to give us humans an existential crisis.
Its track that stands out the most is Amusement Park which provides an eerie vibe and a sense of foreboding.

Honorable mentions:
Emil - Despair
Copied City
Dependent Weakling

Ace Combat: Zero

The Ace Combat isn’t only known for its jets, but also for its huge emphasis on music. Since Ace Combat 04, its epic soundtrack can be attributed to the creative genius of Keiki Kobayashi. He’s partly responsible for the Ace Combat franchise’s charm. It never gets old hearing Latin melodramatic music and adrenaline-fueled tracks while missile alert and explosions shatter the skies. Kobayashi’s magnum opus is none other than Zero, which you can listen to in the Ace Combat Zero (PS2, 2006) in the trailer above.
The blend of acoustic and electronic music provides a perfect atmosphere for knights (or in this case) pilots fighting for their ideals. The track plays in one of the best boss fights in gaming which makes it even more epic.

Honorable mentions:
Ace Combat 6 - Liberation of Gracemeria
Ace Combat 7 - Daredevil, Faceless Soldier, Sol Squadron, Magic Spear
Ace Combat 5 - Unsung War
Ace Combat 4 - Agnus Dei

Lifelight - Smash Bros Theme

Sang by Abby Trott (Erina Koga in the Japanese version), Lifelight is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s theme. Just seeing how the characters in Smash battle it out and losing against Galeem while Kirby ends up being the last one standing dishes out both a feeling of hope and despair. In any case, both the sung and instrumental versions of the song deserve to be on your playlist.

Face my Fears - Kingdom Hearts III Theme

A collaboration of Hikaru Utada and Skrillex, everybody in the Kingdom Hearts fandom lost their minds while it played alongside one of the story trailers. It’s one of those songs that are undoubtedly perfect fits to the game they’re paired up with. Though KHIII was an underwhelming game, the song is a perfect treat to your ears.

Unshaken - Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of gaming’s most recent masterpieces. Featuring an extremely detailed world and well-written characters in a tale of brotherhood, ambition, betrayal, and as its name suggests, redemption, it is further complemented by outstanding performances and musical score. Unshaken, sang by D’Angelo, plays in arguably the most memorable and definitive parts of the game. We can’t dive in further due to spoilers, but it’s one of those “once in a generation” moments.

TES V Skyrim: Song of the Dragonborn

Though a weird choice, Song of the Dragonborn (which can be heard on the trailer above) hyped up dragon fights in Skyrim so much. Sang in “thuum” (ancient dragon language) which Bethesda originally created for the game, it’s lyrics talks about the “dragonborn” (protagonist) and how he’s supposed to bring the end of Alduin, the World Eater.

Celeste’s Entire OST

Celeste is arguably one of the best platformers of the generation. Although its difficulty is Dark Souls-esque, the game encourages players to keep going and not give up despite the uphill and arduous battle ahead. Apart from its compelling story and fun gameplay, its musical score, composed by Lena Raine, is an absolute masterpiece.

Fire Emblem Fates: Lost in Thoughts All Alone

Fire Emblem Fates is one of the most interesting Fire Emblem entries ever. After all, it’s two separate games featuring one protagonist, Erin, with alternate storylines. Fates: Birthright covers Erin joining the Kingdom of Hoshido while Fates: Conquest involves him/her joining Nohr instead. Anyway, Lost in Thoughts All Alone are the games’ main theme, with Rena Strober behind the mic.

Persona 4: I’ll Face Myself

Shoji Meguro’s “I’ll Face Myself” made its way as a central track in Persona 4 and Persona 4: Golden, both as a song when you fight formidable foes and bosses and as an uplifting one during happy cutscenes. It even made its way to Smash Bros Ultimate with the new Joker of Persona 5 DLC. Just hearing it brings memories back to Yasoinaba where Yu Narukami and gang are hanging out in town, solving mysteries and fighting shadows in the TV world.

Honorable mentions:
Last Surprise - Persona 5
Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There - Persona 5
Mass Destruction - Persona 3

So, which soundtracks do you think deserves a spot on this list?
