Facebook games were the staple for many in the early 2000s, when social gaming was all the rage. We all could remember the incessant Facebook posts and messages, where an aunt or your mother is asking you to please help her click so she could get an extra life, get some help on her farm, or even possibly win the in-game event she’s in; as well as the many game community groups on Facebook where we interacted with many of our fellow players, adding new friends and helping each other out. Those are some good old times!

However, whether it is because of the low player population or the devastating effects of not being able to adapt to the death of Flash (RIP), many of those games were shut down over time. That being said, the Facebook games you know and love may not all be gone yet! Here, we’ll take a look at some of the old Facebook games that you can still play, be it on Facebook or their respective websites online.

Farmville 2

“Farmville” was one of the most celebrated (or dreaded, depending on which side you’re on) words of the early 2000s, namely because the game, along with its developer, Zynga, is one of the pioneers spearheading what is now known as social gaming. The game fully uses the many “tie-ins” with the Facebook platform, allowing players to invite their friends to join them, to team up with others, and of course, to get them to send them gifts. There are tons of Farmville community groups on Facebook as well, allowing players to add other players – essentially strangers - to their friends’ lists just to play together and send each other gifts.

This resulted in the memorable and very much hated Farmville request spam that often floods the news feed of hardcore Farmville players, as well as their friends’ and families’… mostly because they can see what the hardcore Farmville player is posting. It has gotten bad enough that some people block their family members on Facebook because of the constant stream of Farmville requests – Sorry, Aunt Kim! I just don’t think having my newsfeed swamped with your Farmville requests is worth it just to see what you had for lunch.

Laughs aside, Farmville is truly no more. Zynga has completely retired the original but has launched a second and much more improved version in its place, aptly named Farmville 2. Farmville 2 is still playable on Facebook and has a substantial player base. If you’re looking to reminisce about the good times of farming with friends, Farmville 2 is there to help!

Sparta: War of Empires

One of my personal favorites, Sparta: War of Empires is a 2D multiplayer-driven real-time strategy game that has captivated millions around the world. The game not only allows you to build and develop your own Spartan city, but also to engage in intense battles against other players who may decide to raze your city to the ground. Of course, you could also play the role of the aggressor and launch attacks to bow neighboring cities to your will and become your vessel.

There are also guilds that you can join to team up for events and have your guildmates to come to your aid (and you to theirs) if you’re being attacked. The camaraderie you can develop by joining a guild is really surreal. Even though you don’t know them personally, you can feel that bond you all had, especially when they come from afar (most of their cities aren’t conveniently placed right next to yours) to help you defend your city from a nasty neighbor or when you all manage to put the guild on the map after overcoming substantial odds during an in-game event.

Like many old Facebook games, Sparta: War of Empires has since been removed from the platform. However, if you’re looking to relive the experience of playing the game, know that you can still do it by visiting the game page on Plarium’s (its developer) website. You now need to download and install the game before you can play, but it’s only a minor hassle compared to the trip down memory lane that you can experience.

Bejeweled Blitz

If you’re a fan of matching games, Bejeweled Blitz is truly the best of the best. After all, who can forget the heyday of Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, when everyone from your distant aunt to your best friend is posting about their new highest score in the game on Facebook.

Despite not being particularly social-oriented, the game has the kind of gameplay that just makes you want to play just another round! Plus, since each game is so quick, Bejeweled Blitz is perfect for the short idle moments in life, whether in a queue or on the loo.

So, if you’re looking for a nostalgic rewind, this old Facebook game is still alive and well on Facebook –yes, it survived the Flash game-culling of 2020 – so you can just hop right back into a game and have fun!

Words with Friends

Words with Friends is another proof of Zynga’s incredible success with social gaming. It is basically an online multiplayer version of Scrabble, albeit with some interesting twists (usually reserved for events), challenges, and themes, but it has since added other forms of word puzzles, including word unscramblers. Fans of the game often tout the game’s amazing matchups, allowing players of different skill levels to enjoy playing the game while giving them that space they need to grow and improve.

Despite being more than a decade old, the game is still one of the top word games in the world, and has millions of daily players worldwide. If you fancy diving into a game and putting your vocabulary and spelling skills to the test against real players, this is the game to play!

Castle Age

Saving the best for last, Castle Age holds a special place in my heart because it is the very first Facebook game that I’ve played where I really went hardcore with. It’s a (mostly) text-based online social strategy game that has a fairly idle-style gameplay where you, quite simply, click on buttons to do everything from questing to fighting in monsters to even battle in arenas … as long as you have enough energy or stamina to do so, of course.

It is currently one of the few text-based games that have survived the peak of Facebook gaming - RIP Vampire Wars, and Mafia Wars.
