4 of the Most Annoying Video Game Characters EverAug 4, 2019 | 1 Votes by Mikhail 10 rate Gaming should be fun but at times, we’re confronted by characters that are absolutely annoying and are better off tweaked or taken out of the game altogether. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable ones:
Video games gave us iconic characters like Kratos in God of War, Mario and Luigi, Donkey Kong, Nathan Drake, and John Marston. They were incredibly well-written and were surrounded by a strong cast which made their respective stories compelling and a joy to experience.
Unfortunately, even if some games have good protagonists, they’re brought down by a terrible supporting cast or a certain character. Some try to be helpful but end up being annoying, while some exist to be part of a terrible gameplay mechanic. At times, they lead to a frustrating experience and you can’t help but wonder why developers put them there in the first place. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best examples of the most annoying characters in the world of gaming.
Ashley Graham - Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 revolutionized several aspects of gaming including the over-the-shoulder shooting mechanics and quick time events (or QTEs). It’s also the game that treated us all to more of Leon Kennedy’s awesomeness and Ada Wong’s charm. Set in an old Spanish village and castle and you fight a deranged cult, parasite-controlled humans and other disgusting beings, your goal is to save the President of the United States’ daughter, Ashley.
Yes, Ashley Graham is one of the most annoying characters in gaming history. Older gamers have rather fond memories of her squealing “LEON!!!! HELLLLPPPP!” while being carried off by a Las Plagas-infected grunt. She doesn’t run away nor does she fight back, when facing enemies. Thing is, this is understandable since she’s just an abducted 17-year-old girl brought in an unfamiliar location halfway across the world. Admittedly though, she’s had some good moments in some parts of the game, like the castle co-op section and she always gets out of the way when you’re shooting a target behind her.
Anyway, her presence gave us all anxiety which always made us pick our targets, shoot carefully, and make sure to keep one eye on her all the time. Since its initial release, the game has been remastered and ported to different platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. I’ve come close to buying it, but then I remember Ashley and immediately back off.
Navi - The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Don’t get us wrong, Ocarina of Time is one of the games ever made and Navi is a pretty helpful companion. After all, she teaches you the controls and many parts of the game’s mechanics. Unfortunately, this little fairy’s enthusiasm gets so over the top that it’s annoying. Regardless if you’re fighting multiple enemies or a boss, she always tries to get your attention and point out something even if you clearly know what it is and you’re heading towards it. Getting bombed repeatedly by an incessant “HEY LISTEN” won’t make us listen, Nintendo.
B-Fresh - NBA 2K18
This lady from NBA 2K18’s my career mode is hands-down, the most annoying and worst-written character in video game history whose only role is to annoy the heck out of anyone unfortunate enough to be around her. Just watching her flail around and listening to her talk is embarrassing and cringe-worthy. Plus, she’s always in your player’s apartment, mooching off and serving no purpose but to advertise a cereal.
Do you know what else makes things worse? Well, the game has unskippable cutscenes due to product placement. You either have to sit through B-Fresh’s episodes or just put your attention. Honestly, why did the writers even put her in there?
Thankfully, 2K19 has a much better and more basketball-focused storyline so 2K has more than made up for it.
The Dog - Duck Hunt
The original Duck Hunt NES game was so cool that any kid who had it was officially the coolest kid in town. After all, it’s one of the first games and you had to use a toy gun and point it at the screen.
Unfortunately, the gun that came with the game more than likely broke apart in many homes and arcades, presumably because of the first incidents of rage in gaming. Why? Well, we can only point to one culprit in Duck Hunt: the dog. Though he’s your companion and points where the ducks are he laughs at you when you miss. This likely led to us exploding in anger and shame motivating us to aim and shoot better while attempting to actually shoot the dog.
Anyway, we finally managed to get our revenge against him when he was included in the roster of Super Smash Bros. Personally, I’ve always made him a practice dummy because finally beating up a video game character who has annoyed you for decades provides one of the best feelings ever.
Other characters that deserve a special mention include Baby Mario, Tails, the police in every GTA game, and Vic Van Lier in NBA 2K16. In the future, we hope developers would focus more on delivering compelling characters who are there with a good purpose or a just not annoying. For example, it would have helped if Ashley could do something to protect herself or if the NBA 2K18 characters omitted B-Fresh or gave the option to skip cutscenes. Though creative freedom is a must, it would be great if they would make create characters with the players in mind.
